A compensation method for a temperature-dependent gain tilt in L-band EDFA using a voltage-controlled attenuator (L-band EDFA 에서의 온도에 따른 이득 변화와 가변 감쇄기를 이용한 온도 보상)

  • This paper presents a compensation method for a temperature-dependent gain tilt in L-band erbium-doped fiber amplifier using a voltage-controlled attenuator. The gain tilts in the L-band of 1570-1605 nm due to a temperature change have negative slopes, whereas they have positive slopes for the increasing optical input powers in a saturation region. The proposed method utilizes these opposite gain variations to compensate for the gain tilt over a wide range of temperature. While applying forty channels with a channel spacing of 100 GHz in the L-band and changing the ambient temperature from 0 to $50^{\circ}C$, the compensation method maintained the gain deviation within 1 dB.

  • A two-stage erbium-doped fiber amplifier (EDFA) with a band pass filter is used to get optical pulses of high peak value. The pulse signal has a 32 ㏈ extinction ratio, 125 W peak power and 79 ㎽ pulse off power. A nonlinear optical loop mirror (NOLM) is used to lower the pulse off power so as to increase the extinction ratio. The pulse signal after the NOLM has a 50.4 ㏈ extinction ratio, 35 W peak power and 0.3 ㎽ pulse off power.

  • In case implementation of microwave photonic (MWP) systems for phased array radars (PARs), noise and time delay error should be minimized to obtain accurate beam direction. Time delay error in MWP systems is generated from signal noise and timing jitter. In this paper, noise and timing jitter in MWP systems for PAR is researched, also according to the amplification of an erbium-doped fiber amplifier, noise and timing jitter variation is verified by an experiment. Timing jitter is decreased and SNR is increased if we amplify the signal by using an erbium-doped fiber amplifier, up to the amplification rate of signal and noise is similar.

  • In this study, we have fabricated a gain flattened erbium-doped optical fiber amplifier. Gain flattening filters were realized by the strain-induced long period fiber gratings, which are made of periodically arrayed metal wires. Using the filter of $550{\mu}m$ period, spontaneous emission amplified at C-band wavelength by a 980nm pumping laser was flattened within 1dB of gain ripple. The performance of the simultaneous multi channel amplification was measured using a fabry-perot laser diode. Amplification ratio was above 20dB. This amplifier can be applied to the long distance transmission system based on a wavelength division multiplexing for boosting an attenuated signal.

  • We investigate the characteristics of RJ (random jitter) in an analog fiber-optic link employing a MZM (Mach-Zehnder modulator) and an EDFA (Erbium-doped fiber amplifier). RJ has been measured using two methods, one of which derived from the noise spectrum of a RF spectrum analyzer and the other from the histogram data of a sampling oscilloscope. If the optical power and/or the RF power input to the MZM increase, RJ decreases due to the output signal power increase. For the optical link without EDFA, the minimum RJ is about 1 ps at an RF power of 10 dBm and an optical power of 8 dBm measured using the noise spectrum method. For the optical link with an EDFA, RJ decreases toward a jitter floor as the EDFA gain increases. If the gain increases further, it has been observed that RJ increases from the minimum. If the EDFA gain is fixed, RJ is smaller for the case of larger optical input power. As the EDFA gain increases, RJ reduction rate becomes greater for the case of lower optical input power.

Spatial Resolution Enhancement with Fiber - based Spectral Filtering for Optical Coherence Tomography

  • We report a technique that improves the spatial resolution of optical coherence tomography (OCT) by utilizing fiber-based spectral filtering. The proposed technique improves the resolution by filtering out the erbium’s characteristic peak from the amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) source spectrum, and reshaping the spectrum to Gaussian-like. We used a long period fiber grating (LPG) and an erbium doped fiber (EDF) absorber for the spectral filtering. An in-house made ASE source as well as a commercial ASE source [ASE-FL7002] was used as the OCT sources to study the proposed technique. The resolution of the OCT based on an in-house made ASE source is enhanced from 200 to 40 ㎛ with an LPG. While, the resolution of the OCT based on a commercial ASE source is enhanced from 25 to 19 ㎛ with the aid of an EDF absorber. However, sidelobes still exist in the interferogram due to imperfect spectral filtering, which limited the resolution. Further enhancement in the spatial resolution of the OCT system using the ASE source is possible with the aid of cascaded LPGs and/or carefully designed EDF absorber.

  • Incoherent broadband optical sources have been applied in various areas such as a light source for optical device characterization, fiber-optic gyroscopes$^{(1)}$ , and spectrum sliced light source in wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) system$^{(2)}$ . To utilize the inherent low loss in silica optical fibers, various types of incoherent light sources are being developed. Among the light sources, the amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) from a rare earth doped fiber has benefits in temperature stability, high output power, low polarization dependence over semiconductor diodes$^{(3)}$ . Recently erbium doped fibers (EDF) have been intensively researched for ASE sources as well as optical amplifiers$^{(4)}$ . The spectrum of ASE from an EDF, however, is limited in the 1520~1560 nm range in conventional configurations. In this letter we described a new broadband ASE source which included both the conventional ASE band of Er$^{3+}$ ion, 1520nm~1560nm and ASE band from Tm$^{3+}$ ions that extends the bandwidth further. For the first time, to the best knowledge of authors, a fiber ASE source based on the energy transfer between Er$^{3+}$ and Tm$^{3+}$ ions in the range of 1460~1550 nm, has been demonstrated using a single 980nm pump laser diode.   • A harmonically mode-locked fiber ring laser cavlty was theoretically analyzed. The measured charactenstlcs of a 10 GHz erbium-doped fiber ring laser were used as a basis of the theoretical analysis. From the nonlinear Schroedinger equation of an actively mode-locked erblUm-doped fiber laser. the effects of the components inside the laser cavity have been analyzed includmg nonlinear effects from group-velocity dispersion (GVD) and self-phase modulation (SPM). Usmg the analysls. we have designed a laser cavity with minimum pulsewidth and chirp by changing the intracavity optical intensity and the bandwidth of the filter.
