  • The dimensional accuracy and global roughness between successive layers of VLM-s, which is a new rapid prototyping process using hotwire cutter and EPS foam, depend significantly on the operating parameters of hotwire cutter. In the present study, the effect of cutting angle on the kerf width and edge shape in hotwire cutting of EPS foam for the case of single-sloped cutting with one cutting angle was investigated. Through single-sloped cutting tests, the modified relationship between kerf width and effective heat input, considering the effect of the cutting angle, and the relationship between the melted area and the cutting angle were obtained. In order to investigate the effect of cutting angles on the thermal field in EPS foam, transient heat transfer analyses using single-sloped volumetric heat flux model and locally-conformed mesh were performed. Through the comparison between experimental and numerical results, it was shown that the proposed analysis model is needed to estimate the three-dimensional temperature distribution of the EPS foam for the case of single-sloped hotwire cutting.

  • To develop an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) for detecting mold, we produced anti-mold polyclonal antibodies by immunizing extracellular polysaccharide (EPS) of Aspergillus flavus or Penicillium citrinum in rabbits subcutaneously. Using the purified antibody (Ab) and Ab-HRP conjugate, a sandwich ELISA for EPS was established. The standard curve of the ELISA showed the detection limit for P citrinum EPS to be $0.003{\;}\mu\textrm{g}/ml$. The cross-reactivities of the anti-P citrinum EPS Ab toward components of P citrinum such as EPS, liquid, and solid culture mycelium were 100, 10.5, and 0.58%, respectively, and those toward components of A. flavus such as EPS, liquid and solid culture mycelium, and spore were 300, 0.67, 0.29, and 0%, respectively. When the reactivities toward culture broths of 59 mold strains were tested by the sandwich ELISA, most of the Aspergillus (16 of 18) and Penicillium (14 of 16) strains along with one of the two Cladosporium strains gave positive signals in the culture broths even when diluted 1,000 fold, while the rest of species such as Fusarium, Absidia, Alternaria, and Candida gave negative signals. When the water extracts of 30 corn samples were analyzed by the sandwich ELISA, the EPS in the com could be detected in the concentration range of $0.1-1.6{\;}\mu\textrm{g}/g$.

  • The behavior and influence of EPS on membrane fouling by changing of hydraulic retention time was investigated, using lab. scale submerged membrane bio-reactor, which was operated with gravitational filtration and fed supernatant of primary sedimentation in waste water treatment plant as influent. The membrane was adopted micro-filter of polyethylene hollow fiber. EPS was analysed as polysaccharides and protein especially, into soluble and bound EPS separately. The concentration of soluble EPS was increased at short HRT, then membrane fouling was rapidly progressed and flux was depressed. The most of EPS clogged membrane pore were polysaccharides, while protein was important parameter affected on membrane fouling because of it's more accumulating in the more term operating.

  • Membrane fouling at different solids retention times (SRT) (7, 12 and 20 days) was studied under well-controlled conditions in a laboratory-scale aerobic submerged membrane bioreactor under constant biomass concentration using a synthetic high strength wastewater. An increase in SRT was found to improve membrane performance and this correlated to changes in the total production of bound extracellular polymeric substances (EPS), and the composition and properties of bound EPS using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Fourier transform-infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and floc sizes. A larger amount of total bound EPS was found at the lowest SRT (7 days) tested but the ratio of proteins (PN) to carbohydrates (CH) in bound EPS increased with an increase in SRT. Similarly, the quantity of soluble microbial products (SMP) decreased with an increase in SRT and the SMP PN/CH ratio increased with an increase in SRT. SMP concentrations positively correlated to the percentage of membrane pore blocking resistance. The quantity of total bound EPS and total SMP positively corresponded to the membrane fouling rate, while the PN/CH ratio in the bound EPS and SMP negatively correlated to the membrane fouling rate. The results show that both the quantity and composition of bound EPS and SMP and floc sizes are important in controlling membrane fouling.

  • This paper presents a design and characteristics analysis of an SRM drive for EPS application. A rack mounted EPS system is considered in this paper. In the unrestricted design conditions, motor parameters are determined for sufficient torque and speed with some restrictions. For the smooth torque generation and simple circuit of power system, 12/8 motor drive is considered. With FEM and magnetic circuit analysis, redesigned motor is simulated to meet the requirement of specifications. Effectiveness of the suggested SRM drive for EPS application is verified by redesigned motor drive tests.

  • L/EPS, manufactured in the shape of block and used for civil engineering, is a lightweight material with an excellent resistance to compression, and provides a superb self-sufficient stability. EPS is a suitable material capable of resolving the problem of settlement and lateral flow if it is applied as the soil on soft ground. The Korean Standards (KS) has not yet proposed any testing method for use of EPS as an engineering banking material. Only its testing and quality ordinance as a heat insulation material has been standardized. The design criteria for EPS has been established and applied through the trial construction of KHC (Korea Highway Corporation) and quality test of manufacturer, but most studies on them have been confined to factory products. This study is focused on comparing and analyzing long-term durability by conducting cyclic load test, freezing and thawing test, absorption rate test and others. EPS used in the test was chosen from construction sites and factory products, focusing on the long-term durability of EPS depending on the passage of time. Unconfined compression test results indicated that the strength of collected samples was lower than factory products. While the triaxial compression test results indicated that the shear strength increased in proportion to the increase of confining pressure, and factory products had declining shear strength as the confining pressure rose.

  • Mrthylov~orits sp. starin SSl, a restricted facultative methylotrophic bacterium. growing on methanol was found to produce small amount of extracellular polysaccharide (EPS) under the optimal growth conditions, while it produced large amount of the polysaccharide under nitrogen limihtion. The optimal ratio of carbon to nitrogen for EPS production were found to be 5.2. The optimal temperature and pH for EPS production were 30^{\circ}C.$ and 6.5, spectively. The EPS consisted of carbohydrate, protein and small amount pyruvic acid. The reducing sugars in the EPS consisted mainly of glucose and a small amount of mannose. The EP!; treated with ethanol (EPSae) was found to have several properties different from those of the EPS which was not treated with ethanol (EPSbe); the EPSae contained no pyruvic acid. It also contained less protein and showed much lower viscosity than the EPSbe. The viscosity of EPSbe was very sensitive to NaCl and decreased t;harply upon exposure of the polysaccharide to even 0.5% (wiv) NaCl solution. The viscosity, however, was increased irreversibly upon exposure of the saccharide to high temperature. The molecular weight of EPS was estimiited to be $2.5{\times}$10^6$ - $3.5{\times}*$10^6$ using Sepharose hB column chromatography. Scanning electron microscopy revealed that the lyophilized EPSbe and EPSae have a structure of thread-like fibers and a mesh-like structure resembling bee-hive, respectively.
