Fiber-guided sensor system using a generator and a receiver can detect the amplitude of load or pressure. However, this type of sensor can show some difficulties in detecting the location of damages and pressure loadings. To overcome this weakness of this type, the ultrasonic active fiber sensor, which has an integrated ultrasonic generator and sensing part, was developed in this study. By using this sensor system, the location of mechanical loads can be exactly detected. Moreover, the ultrasonic active fiber sensor is more cost-effective than an ultrasonic fiber sensor using two piezoelectric transducers which are used as a generator and a receiver, respectively. Two applications of the ultrasonic active fiber sensor are demonstrated: cure monitoring of lead and measurement of liquid level. Present results showed that the active fiber sensor can be applied for various environmental sensing.

Purpose: The objective of this study is to develop a data middleware for u-IT convergence in agricultural environment monitoring, which can support non-standard data interfaces and solve the compatibility problems of heterogenous sensor networks. Methods: Six factors with three different interfaces were chosen as target data among the environmental monitoring factors for crop cultivation. PostgresSQL and PostGIS were used for database and the data middleware was implemented by Python programming language. Based on hierarchical model design and key-value type table design, the data middleware was developed. For evaluation, 2,000 records of each data access interface were prepared. Results: Their execution times of File I/O interface, SQL interface and HTTP interface were 0.00951 s/record, 0.01967 s/record and 0.0401 s/record respectively. And there was no data loss. Conclusions: The data middleware integrated three heterogenous sensor networks with different data access interfaces.

This review focuses on the developed and the being developed environmental sensors in particular biological sensors. As well as discussing the classification and some main principles, presenting current trend of the environmental sensors is given. Two main categories are immunosensors and catalytic sensors. In addition to those. DNA or RNA sensors or protein based sensors are discussed. Some crucial examples of the applications of such sensors are given to show how the sensor technology it used for environmental and biological monitoring, biomarkers of exposure.
In recent years, in the domestic industry, personal damage has occurred due to sensor malfunction and the emission of harmful gases. But there is a limit to the reliability verification of sensor data because the evaluation of environmental sensors is focused on durability and risk tests. This platform designed a sensor board that measures 10 major substances and a performance verification system for each sensor. In addition, the data collected by the sensor board was transferred to the server for data reliability evaluation and verification using LoRa communication, and a prototype of the sensor data platform was produced to monitor the transferred data. And the collected data is analyzed and predicted by using machine learning techniques.
Nine deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) sequences were used to functionalize single-walled carbon nanotube (SWNT) sensors to detect the trace amount of methanol, acetone, and HCl in vapor. DNA 24 Ma (24 randomly arranged nitrogenous bases with one amine at each end of it) decorated SWNT sensor and DNA 24 A (only adenine (A) base with a length of 24) decorated SWNT sensor have demonstrated the largest sensing responses towards acetone and HCl, respectively. On the other hand, for the DNA GT decorated SWNT sensors with different sequence lengths, the optimum DNA sequence length for acetone and HCl sensing is 32 and 8, separately. The detection of methanol, acetone, and HCl have identified that DNA functionalized SWNT sensors exhibit great selectivity, sensitivity, and repeatability with an accuracy of more than 90%. Further, a sensor array composed of SWNT functionalized with various DNA sequences was utilized to identify acetone and HCl through pattern recognition. The sensor array is a combination of four different DNA functionalized SWNT sensors and two bare SWNT sensors (work as reference). This wireless sensing system has enabled real-time gas monitoring and air quality assurance for safety and security.

Novel concept of sensor mat and its signal processing method is proposed for patient monitoring in medical application. Proposed sensor mat structure has sensing inner layer which has cross-linked arrangement using plastic optical fiber(POF). Large core diameter of plastic optical fiber behaved as band pass filter by averaging the noise component caused by unwanted environmental factors. Signal processor followed by sensor output added noise immune performance by filtering out unwanted component. Fail-proof patient breath monitoring scheme was realized by using intelligent decision algorithm. Unlike the conventional approach by using mechanical sensor, which have high sensitivity both to signal and to environmental noise, our approach provided reliable breath motion detection.

Reliable response measurements are extremely important for proper bridge health monitoring but incomplete and unreliable data may be acquired due to sensor problems and environmental effects. In the case of a sensor malfunction, parts of the measured data can be missing so that the structural health condition cannot be monitored reliably. This means that the dynamic characteristics of natural frequencies can change as if the structure is damaged due to environmental effects, such as temperature variations. To overcome these problems, this paper proposes a systematic procedure of data analysis to recover missing data and eliminate the environmental effects from the measured data. It also proposes a health index calculated statistically using revised data to evaluate the health condition of a bridge. The proposed method was examined using numerically simulated data with a truss structure and then applied to a set of field data measured from a cable-stayed bridge.

Ubiquitous computing is one of the key technology areas in the "Project on Development of Ubiquitous computing and network technology" promoted by the Ministry of Science and Technology as a frontier business of the $21^{st}$ century in Korea, which is based on the new concept merging physical space and computer-based cyber space. With recent advances in Micro Electro Mechanical System (MEMS) technology, low cost and low-power consumption wireless micro sensor nodes have been available. Using these smart sensor nodes, there are many activities to monitor real world, for example, habitat monitoring, earthquake monitoring and so on. In this paper, we introduce web-based real environment monitoring system incorporating wireless sensor nodes. It collects sensing data produced by some wireless sensor nodes and stores them into a database system to analyze. Our environment monitoring system is composed of a networked camera and environmental sensor nodes, which are called Mica2 and developed by University of California at Berkeley. We have modified and ported network protocols over TinyOS and developed a monitoring application program using the MTS310 and MTS420 sensors that are able to observe temperature, relative humidity, light and accelerator. The sensed data can be accessed user-friendly because our environment monitoring system supports web-based user interface. Moreover, in this system, we can setup threshold values so the system supports a function to inform some anomalous events to administrators. Especially, the system shows two useful pre-processed data as a kind of practical uses: a discomfort index and a septicity index. To make both index values, the system restores related data from the database system and calculates them according to each equation relatively. We can do enormous works using wireless sensor technologies, but just environment monitoring. In this paper, we show just one of the plentiful applications using sensor technologies.

In this paper, a real-time monitoring system based on WSN is designed and implemented to monitor livestock growth environment information which includes the temperature, humidity and harmful gases such as $CO_{2},\;CO,\;NH_{3},\;H_{2}S$ and so on. The proposed system consists of the wireless sensor nodes, the monitoring management device, the management server and the user interface program based on PC/Smart phone. To verify the performance of the implemented system, gas measurement experiments are performed in laboratory environment by using the designed wireless sensor nodes. And it is able to estimate the concentration of gases. The implemented system is able to monitor the proposed environmental element information through the developed GUI.

This paper presents a wireless sensor network protocol aimed for artificial structure monitoring. The proposed protocol enables the sensor network to operate at a low duty cycle for reducing power consumption with a high degree of synchronization accuracy. It also enables event-triggered measurement of environmental information with a high sampling rate and the transmission of the measured data with a low latency. The feasibility of the proposed protocol is demonstrated through experiments involving three sensor nodes and a sink node. Though a tunnel health monitoring was considered in the paper, the proposed protocol can be easily adopted in other areas.
