  • Low power consuming and highly responsive semiconductor-type microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) gas sensors are fabricated for real-time environmental monitoring applications. This subsystem is developed using a gas sensor module, a Bluetooth module, and a personal digital assistant (PDA) phone. The gas sensor module consists of a $NO_2$ or CO gas sensor and signal processing chips. The MEMS gas sensor is composed of a microheater, a sensing electrode, and sensing material. Metal oxide nanopowder is drop-coated onto a substrate using a microheater and integrated into the gas sensor module. The change in resistance of the metal oxide nanopowder from exposure to oxidizing or deoxidizing gases is utilized as the principle mechanism of this gas sensor operation. The variation detected in the gas sensor module is transferred to the PDA phone by way of the Bluetooth module.

  • This paper presents the field applications of polymer-modified warm asphalt mixture which can reduce the temperature during the production and field constructions. The amount of fuel consumptions and $CO_2$ diffusions can be reduced by much using the polymer-modified warm asphalt mixture instead of the conventional polymer-modified asphalt mixture. According to the research results, the polymer-modified warm asphalt mixture can be utilized without additional temperature increasement and performance sacrifice during the plant production and public service, respectively. As a result, it is considered that the application of the polymer-modified warm asphalt mixture has the potential of convenience in constructions management and reducing the environmental damages.

  • Membrane Fouling was considered as major drawback in various industrial applications. Thus, this paper reviews the surface modification of polyethersulfone (PES) membranes for antifouling performance. Various modification techniques clearly indicate that hydrophilicity has to improve on the PES membrane surface. Moreover, the mechanism of fouling reduction with corresponds to various modification methods is widely discussed. Incorporation of hydrophilic functional groups on PES membrane surface enhances the surface free energy thereby which reduces the fouling. Characterization techniques adopted for the surface modified membranes was also discussed. These studies might be useful for the other researchers to utilize the modification technique for the applications of waste water treatment, chemical process industry and food industry.

  • Nanocellulose, which can exist as either cellulose nanocrystals or cellulose nanofibrils, has been used as a biomaterial for drug delivery owing to its non-immunogenicity, biocompatibility, high specific area, good mechanical properties, and variability for chemical modification. Various water-soluble drugs can be bound to and released from nanocelluloses through electrostatic interactions. The high specific surface area of nanocellulose allows for high specific drug loading. Additionally, a broad spectrum of drugs can bind to nanocellulose after facile chemical modifications of its surface. Controlled release can be achieved for various pharmaceuticals when the nanocellulose surface is chemically modified or physically formulated in an adequate manner. This review summarizes the potential applications of nanocelluloses in drug delivery according to published studies on drug delivery systems.

  • This paper describes design of the 40-kV, 300-A solid-state pulsed power modulator for environmental applications. The modulator has been modified based on a solid-state pulsed power modulator with 150-A current capacity. To improve the pulsed power modulator, the discharge IGBT was changed. In addition, the gate driver was tuned according to the characteristics of the switch. Finally, experimental results proved the reliability of the modified solid-state pulsed power modulator.

  • Application examples of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) in the planning stage of high-rise buildings are introduced. First, we introduce examples of applications in the environmental field. The pedestrian wind environment was one of the earliest practical examples of CFD. CFD was also employed to validate the heat island mitigation measures proposed as part of the new construction plan. Second, application examples of wind-force evaluations are introduced. Prediction examples are presented for the peak wind pressure around a complex-shaped building and the wind force evaluation for a base-isolated building. The results prove that the results of the proper execution of CFD are equivalent to those of the wind tunnel experiment. As examples of CFD applications of other issues related to high-rise building planning, we introduce snow accretion on outer walls and high-temperature exhaust from emergency generators. Finally, the future prospects for the use of CFD are discussed.

  • A Nationwide survey of ecosystem in the Republic of Korea was accomplished from 1986 to 1990 and in that survey, GIS and remote sensing were used partially. This was done by the Ministry of Environment(MOE), which introduced remote sensing and GIS for environment management in late 1980's. Especially the National Institute of Environmental Research (NIER) are under the research on systematization of environmental information with an ultimate goal of application of GIS and remote sensing to environmental impact assessment. Although the Korean peninsula is in a non-tropical zone, we introduce two case studies on remote sensing applications to ecosystem managements in the Republic of Korea. One is a study on change detection in urban vegetation of Seoul with Landsat data and the other is a study on detection of insect damaged pine tree area using Landsat TM data. The techniques involved and the conclusion from these studies were relevant to vegetation studies in tropical ecosystem.

  • LSPIV(Large Scale Particle Image Velocimetry) is widely used in the field of civil and environmental engineering. General aspects of LSPIV are introduced and several applications are introduced in this paper. The difference of LSPIV from the conventional PIV techniques is not to use models for experiments but to use the flow fields in nature. For LSPIV a converting process for the captured images is necessary.
