Chemical vapor deposition (CVD), ion beam sputtering (IBS) and sol-gel method were used to prepare TiO$_2$ thin films for degradation of hazardous organic compounds exemplified by 2-chlorophenol (2-CP). The influence of supporting materials and coating methods on the photocatalytic activity of the TiO$_2$ thin films were also studied. TiO$_2$ thin films were coated onto various supporting materials including steel cloth (SS), copper cloth, quartz glass tube (QGT), and silica gel (SG). Results indicate that SS (37 μm)- TiO$_2$ thin film prepared by IBS method improves the photodegradation of 2-CP. Among all supporting materials studied, SS(37 μm) is found to be the best support.
MTBE and other gasoline additives contained in gasoline are known to be a refractory substance resistant to biodegradation. As a method of removing these substances, a research of method using native microbes of polluted soil was progressed and among these, bio-degradation possibility under aerobic condition was evaluated. All of the experiments were progressed based on batch experiment of lab scale and analyzed by GC-FID using HS-SPME technique. The result of bio-degradation experiment based on MTBE and other additives(ETBE, TAME) was observed below 1 mg/L, which initial concentration were 100 mg/L for each method. And through production of by-product and CO2, partial mineralization was confirmed. Degradation velocity of each additive was promptly represented in the order of TBA>ETBE>MTBE>TAME. Through this study, bio-degradation possibility of native microbes of oil polluted soil, MTBE and other gasoline additives was confirmed and it was considered that the result could be used for basic experiment data in removing oil pollutants of soil.
Degradations of phenol and chlorinated compounds mixtures were studied with ultrasound of 20 kHz and 0.57, 1.14 W/mL. In presence of carbon tetrachloride (CT), degradation rate of phenol is faster than chloroform (CF), dichloromethane (DCM) and phenol solution. It is due to that CT generates of free chlorine (HOCl and $OCl^-$) from the sonochemical degradation and plays a role of hydrogen atom scavenger. CF and DCM are react with free chlorine, so amount of free chlorine is smaller than CT solution. The degradation rates of chlorinated compounds decreased with co-presence of phenol in the solution due to the distribution ultrasonic energy to both compounds. The measured chloride ion was lower than the theoretical concentration assuming complete degradation. This means not all the contaminants destructed went through complete degradation.
The characteristics of photocatalytic degradation of tar colorants such as brilliant blue FCF(BBF) and tartrazine(TTZ) with zinc oxide suspension was studied in a batch reactor under irradiation of ultra-violet ray. Photocatalytic degradation of TTZ with ZnO was more higher than that of BBF, and was Increased with dosage of ZnO below 5g, but was nearly affected with initial pH of two tar colorants aqueous solution. Ammonium persulfate was more effective oxidant than potassium bromate which slightly increased the degradation of BBF, but not increased the degradation of TTZ. The photocatalytic degradation rates of BBF and TTZ were pseudo-first order with rate constants of 0.0066, 0.0092 and $0.015min^{-1}$ for BBF, 0.042, 0.017 and $0.110min^{-1}$ for TTZ at the dosage of 1, 2 and 5g ZnO, respectively.
We studied a storage of waste-brown seaweed at room temperature and degradation of alginate in seaweed by microorganism DS-02. The seaweeds, mixed with 5.0 wt% DS-02 and sealed in vinyl package without any other treatment, could be stored longer than 1 year without spoilage at room temperature. During the storage process, the alginate of seaweed was decomposed by enzyme of DS-02 and the molecular weight of alginate decreased to about 1/10 of initial quantity. DS-02 growed as fast as it had maximum weight after 24 hour culture and it's enzyme had a maximum activity of alginate degradation at $40^{\circ}C.$ The seaweed sample became particles in DS-02 culture solution and the M. W of alginate decreased to about 1/10 of initial value after 24 hour decomposition. The effect of alginate degradation with DS-02 was similar to that of degradation with 3.0 M HCI solution for 24 hour.
In a batch reactor, the characteristics of photocatalytic degradation of brilliant blue FCF in titanium dioxide suspension was studied under the irradiation of ultra-violet ray. Photocatalytic degradation in anatase type of TiO$_2$ was more effective than in rutile type of $TiO_2$ below the dosage of 5g. The degradation rate was slightly increased with decreasing initial pH of brilliant blue FCF aqueous solution, but rapidly increased with the addition of oxidant. Potassium bromate acted as more effective oxidant than ammonium persulfate. The photocatalytic degradation rate of brilliant blue FCF was pseudo-first order with rate constants of 0.012, 0.006 and $0.003min^{-1}$ at initial pH 3.1, 5.2 and 7.1 of brilliant blue FCF solution, respectively.
In this study, the indirect correlation of degradation characteristic and flow behavior in the de-NOx catalyst is investigated experimentally. The inner flow behavior in the de-NOx catalyst is varied from turbulent flow to laminar flow and the degradation of the de-NOx catalyst is remarkably affected by the inner flow. The degradation of the catalyst is increased in the upstream region near the inlet because injected turbulent flow enhances the adhesion of ash particle on the catalyst surface. The degradation of the catalyst near the inlet also governs the overall efficiency of the catalyst. The amount of adhered ash particles on the catalyst surface decreases as they progress downstream. This is due to the inner flow transition from turbulent flow to laminar flow.
The oxidative degradation of BPA with laccase from Trametes versiclor was conducted in a closed, temperature controlled system containing acetate buffer for pH control. The effects of medium pH, buffer concentration, temperature and mediator on degradation of BPA were investigated. The inactivation of the enzyme by temperature and reaction product was also studied. The optimal pH for BPA degradation showed about 5. Buffer concentration did not affect BPA degradation. On the other hand, the enzyme stability was higher at low concentration buffer(25 mM). Temperature rise increased the degradation rate of BPA up to 45$^{\circ}C$. The valuable mediator of laccase for BPA was ABTS. Elevated temperature and reaction product irreversibly inactivated the enzyme.
Tetracycline is one of the most commonly used antibiotics in domestic and foreign livestock industries to suppress the growth of pathogens. Tetracycline has been reported as a non-biodegradable compound. Therefore it has been not completely removed in the sewage treatment process. In this study, tetracycline was degraded using liquid ferrate (VI). Based on these experiments, the optimal water condition (pH and water temperature) were selected, appropriate liquid ferrate (VI) dosage was calculated, and finally the degradation pathway was estimated with the intermediate products detected by LC/MS/MS. All degradation experiments were completed within 30 seconds and the optimal condition was obtained in basic condition (pH 10) at room temperature (20℃). And the appropriate molar ratio between tetracycline and liquid ferrate (VI) was 12.5:1. Finally, 12 intermediate products were detected with LC/MS/MS and the degradation pathways and the degradation pathways and proposed the degradation pathways.
This study contains the photocatalytic degradation of methyl-tert-butyl ether(MTBE), one of water-contaminating substances, into $CO_2$. Herein was investigated factors, kinetics, and reaction pathways related with MTBE degradation. This works is possible to be applied in the field of environmental remediation such as undergroundwater purification with optimized system configuration in the near future.
