The Influence of Entrepreneurial Experience on Entrepreneurial Intention: Mediation Effect of Social Cognitive Attributes (창업경험과 창업의도의 관계에 대한 연구: 사회인지적 요인의 매개효과 및 성별의 조절효과)

  • Identifying the factors that influence the formation of the entrepreneurial intention is important in cultivating entrepreneurs and inducing entrepreneurial innovation in the country. Previous studies have mainly examined the direct effects of social cognition attributes as predictors on entrepreneurial intentions or entrepreneurial activities. However, the fundamental factors that these social cognition attributes are derived from have not been sufficiently addressed in the field of entrepreneurship. Based on social cognitive theory and schema theory, this study assumes that an individual's entrepreneurial experience is an important antecedent factor in forming social cognitive attributes, and reveals the mechanism for how experience forms entrepreneurial intention. To this end, this study analyzes the influence of entrepreneurs' prior experience of entrepreneurial activities on entrepreneurial self-efficacy, opportunity recognition, and fear of failure which are considered to be the main variables that shape entrepreneurial intention. And it analyzes how these factors have a significant effect on entrepreneurship intention. Along with this, the mediating role of these social cognitive attributes is analyzed in order to understand the path that leads from entrepreneurial experience to entrepreneurial intention. This study also suggests how gender moderates the effect of entrepreneurship experience on social cognitive attributes. As a result of the analysis, it was found that entrepreneurial experience increase entrepreneurial self-efficacy and opportunity recognition of entrepreneurs, and decrease the fear of failure. These social perception attribute significantly mediate the relationship between entrepreneurial experience and entrepreneurial intention. This study also found that there are significant moderating effects of gender on the relationship of entrepreneurial experience and both of entrepreneurial self-efficacy and fear of failure. This study also analyzed the impact of the entrepreneurial experience of failure, which corresponds to the detailed experience. Similar to the results of entrepreneurial experience analysis, entrepreneurial experience of failure plays a role in enhancing entrepreneurial self-efficacy. However, its effect on opportunity recognition and fear of failure were not significant. An empirical analysis of data related to 25,047 entrepreneurs from 87 countries, using the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM), shows the differences in the formation of individuals' entrepreneurial intentions according to entrepreneurial experience and the mediating role of social cognitive attributes. The study has embodied the social cognitive theory on entrepreneurial intention by shedding light on the variables that are important but alienated for increasing entrepreneurial intention. Moreover, the study enhances the understanding of cognitive processes leading from individual experiences to entrepreneurial intentions. This study also emphasizes the importance of differentiated approach by gender for boosting entrepreneurial intention through analysis of moderating effect of gender.

  • The study examines differences in entrepreneurial intentions and its antecedents across countries and cultures. This study uses Ajzen's Theory of Planned Behaviour to compare the entrepreneurial intention of two diverse countries: Saudi Arabia and India. The study uses the non-parametric Mann Whitney U test and Structural Equation Modeling to analyze a sample of university students of the two countries. The study finds significant differences among the students of these two countries. The result indicates that entrepreneurial intention is higher in Indian students than their counterparts in Saudi Arabia. The result further indicates that attitude and perceived behavioral control explains entrepreneurial intention in both the countries. However, social norms are significant in explaining entrepreneurial intention only in India and not in Saudi Arabia. The findings of this study suggest that entrepreneurship has higher social approval in India when compared to Saudi Arabia. Social norms impact entrepreneurial intentions differently for India and Saudi Arabia. The study attributes the results to the differences in per capita income and socio-cultural norms in both countries. This study is one of the few that have explored cross-country entrepreneurial attributes as it addresses the research gap in terms of comparing entrepreneurial intentions of India and Saudi Arabia.

Successful vs. Failed Tech Start-ups in India: What Are the Distinctive Features?

  • The entrepreneurial journey is not short of challenges, and about 90% + tech start-ups experience failure (Startup Genome, 2019). The magnitude of the challenges varies across the tech start-up lifecycle stages, namely emergence, stability, and growth. This opens the research question, do the profiles of a start-up and its co-founder impact start-up success or failure across its lifecycle stages? This study aims to understand and identify the profiles of tech start-ups and their co-founders. We gathered primary data from 151 start-ups (Status: 101 failed and 50 successful ones), and they are across different lifecycle stages and represent six major start-up hubs in India. The chi-square test on status and start-up's lifecycle stage indicates a noticeable correlation, and they are not independent. The Kruskal Wallis test was used to distinguish statistically significant profile attributes. The parameters distinguishing success and failure are identified, and the need to deliver customer experience is emphasized by the start-up profile attributes: Product/service, high-tech nature of a start-up, investor fund availed, co-founder experience, and employee count. The importance of entrepreneurial experience is ascertained with entrepreneur profile attributes: Entrepreneurial expertise, the number of prior and current start-ups, their willingness to start again in the event of failure, and age of co-founder, which is a proxy to learning and experience. This study has implications for entrepreneurs, investors, and policymakers.

  • This Research is based on the theory of the prior researches that have demonstrated a positive impact of the entrepreneurship and competitive advantages on business performance. And the purpose of this research which approaches in the viewpoint of combining a entrepreneurial attribute including two factors(entrepreneurship and commercialization capabilities) and the differentiated competitive advantage as a role of core competence is to examine how the combined competence affects the business performance. In order to achieve this purpose, we conduct a survey for CEO of 250 small firms which belong to the start-up phase and are located in the 6 administrative region with the assistance of Small & Medium Business Administration representatives and analyze empirically the survey data by utilizing statistical program(Spss 18.0). As the results, we conclude that the entrepreneurial attributes of small firms' CEO and DFCA have a positive impact on business performance respectively and the entrepreneurship, one of the two entrepreneurial factors, has a positive impact on choosing DFCA. Also we report that DFCA plays a mediating role with regards to relationship between entrepreneurial attributes and business performance. Therefore, this research suggests the followings: First, the CEO of start-up business should focus on building a differential competitive advantage which is the basis for creating competitiveness from the initial point. Secondly, he should make a alignment for core competencies, in order to reach the stable growth phase in the shortest period, through which the entrepreneurial attributes is to be inherent as a discriminatory competitive competence. Third, he should promote to establish a business strategy based on strengthening of entrepreneurship and discriminatory competitive as a growth strategy during start-up phase.

A Conceptual Study on the Types of Entrepreneurial Opportunity and Laboratory Start-ups (창업 기회의 유형과 실험실 창업에 대한 개념적 연구)

  • This study focuses on the proposition that the qualities and environmental conditions required for exploring entrepreneurial opportunities and realizing entrepreneurial opportunities depend on the types of entrepreneurial opportunities. In particular, this study aims to identify the type of entrepreneurial opportunities for laboratory start-ups, which have recently been gaining policy level attention. If the type of entrepreneurial opportunities for laboratory start-ups is identified as discriminative, appropriate start-up support policies and training programs can be established. For this study, eight major papers were identified among the papers of last 30 years related to the types of entrepreneurial opportunities. After, the classification attributes for each opportunity type were derived. Then, the existing theories of recognition, discovery and creative opportunities were organized, critically reviewed and reorganized. In addition, the substance of laboratory start-ups was verified according to the standardized classification attributes of the revised and reorganized opportunity types and newly classified as 'creative opportunity'. This study also presents networking capabilities and market orientation as examples of the capabilities needed for entrepreneurs of creative opportunity type. The implication of this study is that it makes it easy to discriminate ontological typology of entrepreneurial opportunity, derives important classification attributes, and that it organizes them conceptually. In addition, it critically reconstructs the problems of confusion in the existing typology, and based on this, the type of entrepreneurial opportunities for laboratory start-ups is determined as creative opportunity. These achievements can contribute to the improvement of start-up policies and start-up training programs according to the types of entrepreneurial opportunity and laboratory start-ups in the future, resulting in realization of actual results at the start-up sites.

  • Considerable agreement exists about the importance of promoting entrepreneurship in both developed and developing countries. In less developed countries, governments see entrepreneurship as a way to stimulate economic development and tackle serious economic and social challenges. So how can countries encourage young people to become entrepreneurs? Research confirms that intentions play an important role in the decision to start a new firm and many factors influence that intentions. The purpose of the study was to investigate the antecedents to entrepreneurship behavior with particular attention to moderating role of social support and entrepreneur self-efficacy. The study covered 116 business students of undergraduate and post graduate level studying under different universities in Kathmandu, Nepal. The questionnaire for data collection was distributed in college groups via WhatsApp and viber with the support and permission from the college administration. The study design used was correlational with a sampling procedure of convenience. The study only showed the impact of attitude to entrepreneurship behavior as well as moderating effect of social support was also observed.

  • The study examines entrepreneurial motivation and maintenance factors of independent publication, a rising business in the current digital era. Focusing on a case of independent publication which has been successful, this research discloses that personal attributes and backgrounds of individuals are the main factors to motivate them to establish businesses. Personal attributes include desire for achievement, self-control, risk-taking inclination, and etc., and personal backgrounds contain educational background, work experiences in the same line of business, social network, and etc. Moreover, this research also discovers that both intrinsic reward indicating the belief that the individuals will be able to publish the books which they want, and extrinsic reward as market profits are the main maintenance factors. This case study will contribute to developing the education and consulting programs for independent publication entrepreneurship and the related policies.

  • The firms must perform both exploitation activities that efficiently use current resources and exploration activities that capture new opportunities. A company that simultaneously performs two opposite attributes, exploitation and exploration activities, is called an 'Ambidexerity Organization' or 'Organizational ambidexterity', which is called the Ambidextrous organization. This study examines whether the key factors of entrepreneurial orientation affect a firm's performance using two-handed strategies, and empirically analyzes the moderating effects of environmental dynamics. The results show that the entrepreneurial orientation has a significant effect on a firm's performance in the Ambidextrous organization. In addition, the moderating effect of environmental dynamics showed a moderating effect on the relationship between entrepreneurial orientation and organizational ambidexterity. This study not only suggests practical implications for SMEs, including venture firms and startups, but also has a significant impact on the relationship between organizational ambidexterity and a firm's performance. It is expected to make academic contributions by introducing variables and analyzing influential relationships.

Campus Entrepreneurial Ecosystems and Regional Culture: A Comparison of Seoul National University and KAIST in Korea (캠퍼스 창업생태계와 지역문화: 서울대와 카이스트 비교를 중심으로)

  • This article examines how and why entrepreneurship differs by region concerning the history of Korea's entrepreneurial ecosystems (EEs). Through a qualitative analysis of 19 interviews, this article compares the history and components of Seoul National University and KAIST (Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology) EEs. First, these ecosystems emerged around 1996 and are currently experiencing the second startup boom, with various supporting organizations and actors involved. Second, these ecosystems revealed differences concerning material, social and cultural attributes. Third, differences in the networking of the two ecosystems are due to different regional cultures, which allow individuals to interpret entrepreneurial opportunities. In other words, the maintenance and development of EEs are cultural in essence and display regional variation.

The Effects of Business Startup Attributes on Customer Orientation and Business Startup Performance in the Foodservice Industry (외식산업 창업속성이 고객지향성 및 창업성과에 미치는 영향)

  • The purpose of this study is to figure out the effects of business startup attributes on customer orientation and business startup performance in the foodservice industry. To achieve this, a survey was carried on 300 entrepreneurs, who are running 5 or more years of restaurants in Seoul, through February 1 to February 28, 2013. The SPSS v. 17.0 statistical package program was used for data analysis. The results were as follows; First, the effect of business startup attributes on the understanding of customers' desires in the foodservice industry showed that business startup funds, business startup location, business startup facilities and business startup products had a significant positive effect on the understanding of customers' desires. Second, the effect of business startup attributes on customer relationship in the foodservice industry showed that business startup funds, business startup facilities and business startup products had a significant positive effect on the customer relationship. Third, the effect of customer orientation on business startup performance in the foodservice industry showed that the understanding of customers' desires and customer relationship had a significant positive effect on the business startup performance. These results suggest that business startup funds, business startup location, business startup facilities and business startup products in the foodservice industry are important, and the customer-oriented understanding of customers' desires and close adherence to customers lead to ultimate performance, supporting a stable management in the long term.
