The Effect of Social-Emotional Competency on College Students in South Korea

  • The purpose of this study was to understand the influence of the level of social emotional competence of college students on their achievement emotion, life satisfaction, and academic achievement. To this end, a survey was conducted with 301 college students in the Busan and Gyeongnam areas of Korea in 2019. The students were divided into high, medium, and low levels according to social emotional competence. Then, on the basis of these divisions, their achievement emotion, life satisfaction, and academic achievement were compared with oneway ANOVA. The results indicated that students with high social emotional competence had higher average scores in positive achievement emotion: enthusiasm, hope, and pride; lower average scores in negative achievement emotion: anger, anxiety, shame, frustration, and boredom; and higher average scores in life satisfaction, and academic achievement compared to the group with middle and low social emotional competence. Based on the results, this article discusses considerations and recommendations for follow-on studies. It also highlights the need for social emotional competence education in Korea against the backdrop of intense pressure on students to perform well academically and a culture where emotion is not freely expressed.

Developing Student-Teacher Interaction Through Task-Based Instruction

  • The current study investigates how student-teacher interaction can be developed through task-based teaching in undergraduate students' Saudi teaching and learning context. An experiment was conducted for five weeks on 85 male undergraduate students at a Saudi public university based in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. The study investigated different types of student-teacher interaction through task-based teaching (speaking activities). The results revealed that the experimental group (43 students) evinced much more enthusiasm, willingness, engagement and readiness in their inclass participation than their peers in the control group (42 students). The student-teacher interaction also helped students to be more responsive to general and specific topics in speaking activities. The study recommends that decision-makers in education make student-teacher interaction part of the student's monthly assessment. It also recommends that more efforts be made to foster the awareness of students, teachers, and parents awareness of the academic and non-academic importance of interaction. One final recommendation of the research is that student-teacher interaction should be more emphasized and integrated into the school curriculum and adopted as a critical teaching strategy.

  • Wearable metaverse devices have sparked enthusiasm as innovative virtual computing user interfaces by addressing a major source of user discomfort, namely, motion-to-photon latency. This kind of latency occurs between the user motion and screen update. To enhance the realism and immersion of experiences using metaverse devices, the vergence-accommodation conflict in stereoscopic image representation must be resolved. Ongoing research aims to address current challenges by adopting vari-focal, multifocal, and light field display technologies for stereoscopic imaging. We explore current trends in research with emphasis on multifocal stereoscopic imaging. Successful metaverse visualization services require the integration of stereoscopic image rendering modules and content encoding/decoding technologies tailored to these services. Additionally, real-time video processing is essential for these modules to correctly and timely process such content and implement metaverse visualization services.

College Students' Perspectives on How Emotions Affect their Learning Motivation and Academic Performance

  • This study aimed to investigate types of emotional experiences that college students undergo, particularly those affecting learning motivation and academic performance. To this end, six college students residing in Seoul, South Korea participated in a series of 'focus-group interview (FGI)' sessions in which in-depths discussions took place. The researcher attempted to draw the participant students' opinions and ideas as they made interactions with each other. Three participants were placed in each of two groups, and each group had approximately 90-minutes-long sessions. The results showed that positive emotions, such as joy and enthusiasm, can increase learning motivation and academic achievement, while negative emotions such as anxiety and stress can hinder them. The findings also highlight that students actively employ coping strategies to manage negative emotions. Moreover, the study underscores students' desire for improved emotional support from instructors, indicating a gap between their expectations and the actual emotional care provided in educational settings. Relevant issues are discussed for future suggestions.

  • In this paper, Depression is a mental disorder characterized by a lack of enthusiasm and feelings of sadness, which significantly impairs daily functioning. In 2018, there was an increase in book sales in the essay genre, particularly the popularity of "healing essays." This trend is seen as challenging the negative image and prejudices associated with depression. In 2021, a significant rise in the proportion of 20-year-old patients with depression is attributed to factors like job-related stress, interpersonal issues, and financial burdens. Additionally, there is a strong correlation between depression and suicidal thoughts, particularly among individuals who have experienced feelings of depression. Despite the increasing prevalence of depression among young adults, research in this area is lacking. To address this gap, statistical tools such as logistic regression and chi-squared tests are employed. The analysis reveals various independent variables associated with feelings of depression, shedding light on the relationships between these factors.

A study on the impact of Professional burnout and job autonomy on turnover intention in radiologic technologists (방사선사의 업무소진과 업무자율성이 이직의사에 미치는 연구)

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the impact of the professional burnout and job autonomy of radiologic technologists on their turnover intention in hospitals. The major findings of the study were as follows: As for the average and standard deviation of the radiologic technologists in professional burnout and job autonomy, they got a mean of 3.15 in overall professional burnout, which was above the average. They got 2.88 in job autonomy, which was below the average. And they got 3.30 in turnover intention, which indicated that they had a strong tendency to change jobs. Regarding the influential factors for turnover intention, emotional burnout, loss of interest and loss of enthusiasm were identified as the factors that exerted a significant influence on turnover intention. If the kind of environments that stimulate their professional enthusiasm and allow them to make a decision on radiographic examinations based on their own professional knowledge is created, their burnout will be minimized. And the development of programs geared toward bolstering their job autonomy is expected to weaken their turnover intention, to enhance the efficiency of the personnel administration of radiologic technologists and their qualifications, and ultimately to boost their status in hospital organizations.

A Comparative Study on Learner Satisfaction according to Instructional Mode -Case Analysis of Lecture Evaluation of the Same Course by the Same Instructor (수업 유형에 따른 학습자 만족도 비교 연구 -동일 교수자의 동일 강좌 강의평가 사례 분석)

  • This study was performed to obtain basic data in relation to instructional design and teaching strategy according to instructional modes. For the purpose of this study, participants evaluated the qualities of the instructions they attended and the results of the evaluation were compared according to 4 instructional modes(content class, online real-time class, online and face-to-face mixed class, and face-to-face class). As a result of the study, there were differences in the evaluation regarding the appropriateness of the course according to instructional modes. That is, satisfaction with lecture progress was lower in the online real-time classes than in content classes, mixed classes, and face-to-face classes. As a result of the descriptive lecture evaluation analysis, in the content class type, students answered that they were satisfied with the easily understandable and interesting explanations. In the case of the online real-time classes, it was found that they were satisfied with thorough preparation and effective communication. In the mixed class type, they said they were satisfied with the systematic class and passionate lecture, and in the face-to-face classes, the pleasure of interaction and the enthusiasm of the instructor were identified as the main reasons for satisfaction. It was analyzed that the satisfaction characteristic commonly derived from the four class types was the enthusiasm of the instructor. The results of this study are expected to provide implications for instructional design and teaching strategy establishment according to each instructional mode.

A Comparison of the Beauty of Costume in the Gothic and Renaissance Periods

  • This study aims to compare the beauty of costume in the Gothic with that of Renaissance periods. By analyzing the beauty of costume which reflects the ideal of the age, this study attempts to provide the insight which can predict the beauty of future costume The characteristics of Gothic costume is the from of the loose enveloping of the body, which can be accounted for from the influence the Christian religion, and the emphasis on the vertical line influenced by the steeple in the Gothic architecture expressing the enthusiasm of the religion. The emphasis on height in the Gothic cathedrals was reflected in the hennin, pointed shoes, and lengthy sleeves of Gothic dress. The beauty of Gothic costume lies in the from of slender, the emphases on the vertical line, the we of heraldry and parti-color, and pointed hat and shoe. The Renaissance architecture shows a broad horizontal appearance. There is the similarity between the Renaissance costume and Renaissance architecture. The beauty of Renaissance costume lies in the form of the exposing body, the exaggerated silhouette, the emphasis on the horizontal line, the use of ruff and slash in order to display the beauty of human body and the beauty of cubic. The ideal beauty of Gothic and Renaissance costume was influenced by the spirit the age and was in contrast.

  • This study analyzed the influences of elementary students' usage of smartphone, computer and TV on academic attitude. Of the subjects residing in the U city to target of 10 elementary schools from the fourth grade to sixth grade, 865 students were sampled. This research made a frequency analysis and reliability analysis of the obtained date using SPSS 21.0 program were used. Research results are as follows. First, in the smartphone, computer and TV usage status of elementary school, smartphone, computer and TV were used the high frequency with which almost every commonly used, was found to be necessary to take advantage of the time to less than one hour a day, mostly alone, it has been found that a lot of online games, videos and SNS. Second, the use of smartphone, computer and TV were showed a significant effect on all sub-variables of open, self-concept, initiative, responsibility, learning enthusiasm, future orientation, creativity, self-assessment.

  • Taylor and Ford in the 1910s led to the "scientific management" for the entire industry from the manufacturing spread of TQM Total Quality Management has been structured as a management efficiency, such as 6-Sigma techniques were developed. SW development also introduces the idea, such as CMMI and SPICE-based process management, management practices have evolved. However, in recent years to increase the knowledge of workers in the manufacturing process oriented management approach is under serious challenge. Business performance or productivity will be varied depending all motivation, human relationship, job involvement rather than simply putting a lot of time. Especially in the SW industry which is depending on human resource, Creativity should be limited in traditional management methods. Recently, Google and Apple, Cisco and global advanced companies adopt a human relationship management. Their productivity and creativity in product development has been successful by giving autonomy and motivation, enthusiasm and vision to tile employees. Human relationship management since the mid-1990s, appears as a new paradigm so called Agile process in the field of SW development. Agile processes emphasis on light, flexible and responding to changes immediately in the business environment step away from traditional management approach which is the heavy and complicated process. In this paper, agile project management concepts and practices which is applied to industry will be examined.
