  • Critical heat flux refers to the sudden decrease in boiling heat transfer coefficient between a heated surface and fluid, which occurs when the phase of the fluid near the heated surface changes from liquid to vapor. For this reason, critical heat flux is an important factor for determining the maximum limit and safety of a boiling heat transfer. Recently, it is reported that the nanofluid is used as a working fluid for the critical heat flux enhancement. However, it could be occurred nano-flouling phenomena on the heat transfer surface due to nanoparticles deposition, when the nanofluid is applied in a heat transfer system. In this study, we experimentally carried out the effects of the nano-fouling phenomena in oxidized multi-wall carbon nanotube and oxidized graphene nanofluid systems. It was found that the boiling heat flux decreased by hourly 0.04 and $0.03kW/m^2$, also the boiling heat transfer coefficient decreased by hourly 11.56 and $10.72W/m^2{\cdot}K$, respectively, in the thermal fluid system using oxidized multi-wall carbon nanotube or oxidized graphene nanofluid.

  • Pool boiling heat transfer of water saturated at atmospheric pressure was investigated experimentally on Cu surfaces with high-temperature, thermally-conductive, microporous coatings (HTCMC). The coatings were created by sintering Cu powders on Cu surfaces in a nitrogen gas environment. A parametric study of the effects of particle size and coating thickness was conducted using three average particle sizes (APSs) of $10{\mu}m$, $25{\mu}m$, and $67{\mu}m$ and various coating thicknesses. It was found that nucleate boiling heat transfer (NBHT) and critical heat flux (CHF) were enhanced significantly for sintered microporous coatings. This is believed to have resulted from the random porous structures that appear to include reentrant type cavities. The maximum NBHT coefficient was measured to be approximately $400kW/m^2k$ with APS $67{\mu}m$ and $296{\mu}m$ coating thicknesses. This value is approximately eight times higher than that of a plain Cu surface. The maximum CHF observed was $2.1MW/m^2$ at APS $67{\mu}m$ and $428{\mu}m$ coating thicknesses, which is approximately double the CHF of a plain Cu surface. The enhancement of NBHT and CHF appeared to increase as the particle size increased in the tested range. However, two larger particle sizes ($25{\mu}m$ and $67{\mu}m$) showed a similar level of enhancement.

  • The present numerical study investigates flow characters and heat transfer enhancement by the viscoelastic-driven secondary flow and buoyancy effect in a 2:1 rectangular duct. Three versions of thermal boundary conditions involving difference combination of heated walls and adiabatic walls are analyzed in this study. The Reiner-Rivlin model is adopted as a viscoelastic fluid model to simulate the secondary flow and temperature-dependent viscosity model is used. Calculated Nusselt numbers are very good agreement with experimental results for reported viscoelastic fluids. It is found that the heat transfer enhancement is mainly caused by the viscoelastic-driven secondary flow and buoyancy-induced secondary flow play a role of promoting this effect.

  • The present research was experimentally performed to analyze the effect of delta-wing vortex generators(DWVG) on the heat transfer of fin surface of the plate fin-oval tube. The local heat transfer coefficient of the fin surface for four kinds of DWVG's arrangement was measured by the naphthalene sublimation technique for Reynolds numbers ranging from 2000 to 3200. The results showed that the heat transfer of the plate fin-oval tube can be significantly enhanced by DWVG for relatively low Reynolds numbers.

  • There have been many studies for heat transfer enhancement. Particularly, the study of flow in heat exchangers which have fin device has been main theme in heat transfer area. Practically, the circular tube which has internal fins is widely used for developing heat transfer rate. In this study, flow and heat transfer analysis of the circular tube with fins are investigated. The height and the number of fins are arbitrary. The flow field is assumed to be laminar. The conformal mapping is used for analytic solution of the laminar flow field. Discretization of governing equation, namely, FDM was used for numerical analysis. The velocity field, flow rate and shear stress are calculated for some numbers of fins in circular tube and for some heights of fin. Temperature fields are plotted along the tube length. It can be shown that the numerical solution agrees with the analytical solution.

  • The characteristics of heat transfer in a two-dimensional channel obstructed by a square rod is investigated by a turbulence model. The computation is made for the six cases of different rod positions between channel walls. To analyze the wall heat transfer, the heat flux of channel walls is set as a constant value and the $k-{\epsilon}-f_{\mu}$ model is employed. Downstream the square rod, the flow recirculation region appear and they are varied by the rod position. The enhancement of the turbulent heat transfer to the wall is induced by the flow instability using a square rod. The averaged heat transfer rate is maximized at a specific rod position. Finally, the effects of square rod on unsteady flows are scrutinized with the frequency analysis.

  • The present study aims to experimentally investigate the evaporative heat transfer characteristics of Oxi-nitriding SPCC surface. Moreover, the heat transfer coefficient was examined with respect to surface temperature during droplet evaporation. In fact, the nitriding surface showed significant enhancement for anticorrosion performance compared to bare SPCC surface but the thermal resistance also increased due to the formation of compound layer. From the experimental results, the evaporative behavior of sessile droplet on nitriding surface showed similar tendency with the bare surface. Total evaporation time of sessile droplet on the nitriding surface was delayed less than 5%. The difference in heat transfer coefficient increased with the surface temperature, and the maximum difference was estimated to be around 11% at $80^{\circ}C$ surface. Thus, this nitriding surface treatment method could be useful for seawater heat exchanger industries.

  • The heat (mass) transfer characteristics on the blade surface of a first-stage turbine rotor cascade has been investigated by employing the naphthalene sublimation technique. A four-axis profile measurement system is employed for the measurements of the local heat (mass) transfer coefficient on the curved blade surface. The experiments are carried out for two free-stream turbulence intensities of 1.2% and 14.7%. The high free-stream turbulence results in more uniform distributions of heat load on the both pressure and suction surfaces and in an early boundary-layer separation on the suction surface. The heat (mass) transfer enhancement on the suction surface due to the endwall vortices is found to be relatively small under the high free-stream turbulence.

  • Experiments have been conducted to obtain local and average heat transfer coefficients associated with impingement of a row of circular, free surface-water jets on a constant heat flux surface. Nozzle arrays are a row of 3 jets (nozzle dia.=4.6 mm) and a row of 5 jets (nozzle dia.=3.6 mm), and the nozzle configuration is Reverse cone type revealed good performance in heat transfer. Nozzle-to-plate spacings ranging from 16 mm to 80 mm were investigated for two jet center to center spacings 25 mm and 37.5 mm in the jet velocity of 3 m/s (R $e_{D}$=27000) to 8 m/s (R $e_{D}$=70000). For a row of 3 jets and a row of 5 jets, the stagnation heat transfer of the central jet is lower than that of adjacent jets. In the wall jet region between jets, for small nozzle-to-plate spacing and large jet velocity, the local maximum in the Nusselt number was observed, however, for small jet velocity or large nozzle-to-plate spacing, the local maximum was not observed. Except for the condition of $V_{O}$=8 m/s and H/D=10, the average Nusselt number reveals the following ranking: a row of 5 jets, a row of 3 jets, single jet. For a row of 3 jet, the maximum average Nusselt number occurs at H/D=8 ~ 10, and for a row of 5 jets, it occurs at H/D=2 ~ 4. Compared with the single jet, enhancement of average heat transfer for a row of 3 jets is approximately 1.52 ~ 2.28 times, and 1.69 ~ 3.75 times for a row of 5 jets.ets.s.

  • Condensation heat transfer characteristics have been investigated experimentally when a water vapor is condensed on the outside of a horizontal copper tube in a condenser. This problem is of particular interest in the design of a LiBr-water absorption system. Hydrophilic surface modification was performed to increase the wettability on the copper tube. The optimum hydrophilic treatment condition using acethylene and nitrogen as reaction gas is also studied in detail. The results obtained indicate that the optimum reaction gas ratio of acethylene to nitrogen for hydrophilic surface modification was found to be 7 : 3 for the best condensation heat transfer. In the wide ranges of coolant inlet temperatures, and coolant mass flow rates, both the condensation heat transfer rate and the condensation heat transfer coefficient of a hydrophilic copper tube are increased substantially, compared with those of a conventional copper tube used in a condenser. It is also found that the condensation heat transfer enhancement by the hydrophilic surface modification still emains even after a hundred cycles of wet/dry processes.
