This study was designed to assess demotivation factors and compare the factor between two secondary school student groups. It furthermore examined how the factors related to students' L2 proficiency. A 31-item questionnaire was completed by 407 junior (JH) and senior high school (SH) students. Five factors were extracted through the principal axis factoring: Teachers' competence and teaching styles, Dissatisfaction with English classes and grading system, Difficulty of learning English, Lack of motivation and interest in learning English, and Inadequate learning contents. Although both JH and SH students did not perceive their English teacher as a strong attribution of demotivation, Difficulty of learning English and Dissatisfaction with English classes and grading system were the two strongest demotivating factors. When compared the overall mean scores of each factor between JH and SH groups, significant differences were found in all factors except Factor 4, with SH students reporting stronger demotivation. JH students attributed their demotivation to Difficulty of learning English, while SH students attributed that to Dissatisfaction with English classes and grading system. Both groups tended to attribute their demotivation to external forces. The study also showed that several demotivation factors related negatively to L2 proficiency.

본 연구는 한국의 경영 대학 학생들을 대상으로 특수 목적 관련 집중 교양영어 수업을 실시하여 나타난 결과이다. 이 연구는 학생들이 앞으로 학습할 전공 관련 과목들의 영어 습득 능력을 향상시키기 위한 방법으로 특수 목적 관련 집중 교양영어 수업 계획을 진행시켰다. 학생들의 영어 실력 향상도와 학업 성취도를 알아 보기위해 실험 전인 학기 초에 미리 테스트를 실시했고 실험이 끝난 학기 말에 역시 테스트를 실시하여 결과를 비교해보았다. 실험 학기 동안 학생들은 영어 기초 지식 관련 일반 교양영어 수업이 아닌 경영학 전공과 관련된 교재, 학습 활동, 과제 등을 통한 수업을 진행하였다. 연구 결과 특히 성적이 낮은 학생들의 학업 성취 향상도가 두드러졌다. 이는 학생들의 교양 영어 학습목적이 전공 관련 특수 목적 영어 학습이라는 이유 때문에 학생들의 학습동기가 높았다는 것이 주된 이유로 나타났다.

This paper attempts to examine the effect of children's English stories on the development of Korean EFL primary school learners' listening and speaking competences and their motivation to learn English. This paper also discusses factors of English children's stories that make EFL learners' language learning efficient. Participants were 120 primary school students who attend one of the elementary schools in Chungnam province. They were randomly chosen and divided into two groups: experimental and control groups. In order to collect data, students' listening and speaking proficiency pre- and post-tests and the pre- and post-questionnaires regarding the participants' motivation to learn English were administered. The data were analyzed by ANOVA. The results indicate that the application of English children's stories to EFL learning settings can be an efficient way to improve EFL learners' listening and speaking competences and motivation to learn their target language. The findings of this study suggest that English children's stories provide language learners with interest, meaningful and authentic contexts and enjoyment. The pedagogical suggestion and implications are provided for EFL educators and teachers.

English has been taught as a compulsory subject at elementary schools since 1997 starting with third graders, to sixth graders. We have seen active research on teaching methods for elementary English, but little has been done from the learners' perspective. It is very proper time for English educators to review what the elementary students think about their English classes. The purpose of the present study is as following. First, we tried to find out how the students' attitude toward and interest in English have changed over the four-year English education. Second we attempted to suggest the ways to promote the students' interests, and to increase understanding and participation in English classes. We also suggest that curriculum developers need to consider the students' lower interests and understanding in English classes as they move to higher grades, and that classroom teachers need to have a better understanding of what their students do and feel in the English classes.

The purpose of the present study is to examine the degree to which the writing instruction using animations has effects on the writing performance of $4^{th}$ year elementary school students. This study also examined the effects of the animation-based writing instruction on the interest and confidence of those students. To this aim, the present study utilized a set of writing tests and questionnaires before and after the instruction. The data were collected from 63 elementary school students. The data were then analyzed using a series of statistical analyses. The results suggested that the students who received the writing instruction using animations performed significantly better on the writing test than those who received the textbook-based instruction. The results also suggested that those who received the animation-based instruction showed more positive interest and confidence on English and English learning. Finally, limitations of the present study and suggestions for further studies are discussed at the end of the paper.

본 예비연구의 목적은 이미지 생성 인공지능 도구인 DALL-E2를 활용하여 영어 작문 활동을 실시한 후 중학생들의 영어 학습에 미치는 반응을 살펴보는 데 있다. 이를 위하여 15명의 중학교 영어학습자를 대상으로 3주간 실험 수업을 진행하였으며 그 결과를 정리하면 다음과 같다. 첫째, DALL-E2 활용 영어 작문 활동에 대한 설문조사 결과, 자신감, 흥미 및 인공지능 기반 도구 활용 쓰기에 대한 인식이 긍정적으로 변화하였음을 알 수 있었다. 아울러 통계적으로 유의미한 차이가 나타났음을 확인하였으며 이는 인공지능 활용 학습이 영어 작문 및 전반적인 영어 학습에 있어 긍정적인 영향을 미쳤다는 것을 의미하였다. 둘째, DALL-E2 활용 영어 작문 활동에 대한 소감문을 내용분석을 통해 분석한 결과, 핵심 주제를 3가지(인지적, 정의적, 심동적 특성)로 추출할 수 있었으며 영어 학습에 있어 인공지능 기반의 DALL-E2의 활용과 접목은 학습에 대한 새로운 흥미와 도전, 의지, 적극성을 높이며 궁극적으로는 영어표현력(productive skill) 향상에 일부 기여한 것으로 해석할 수 있었다.

The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of using visual stimulation and gesture, namely embodied language learning, on learning achievement and learner's course interest in the EFL classroom. To investigate the effectiveness of the proposed purpose, thirty two third-grade elementary school students participated and were assigned into four English learning class conditions (i.e., using animated graphic and gestures condition, using only animated graphic condition, using still pictures and gesture condition, and control condition). The research questions for this study are addressed below: (1) What differences are there in post and delayed learning achievement between imitating gesture group and non-imitating one and between animated graphic group and still picture one? (2) What differences are there in course interest between imitating gesture group and non-imitating one and between animated graphic group and still picture one? The Embodiment-based English learning system for this study was designed by using Microsoft's Kinect sensing devices. The results of this study revealed that students of imitating gesture group memorized and retained better words and sentence structure than those of the other groups. As for learner's course interest measurement, imitating gesture group showed a highly positive response to attention, relevance, and satisfaction for curriculum and using animated graphic influenced satisfaction as well. This finding can be attributed to the embodied cognition, which proposes that the body and the mind are inseparable in the constitution of cognition and thus students using visual simulation and imitating related gesture regard the embodied language learning approach more satisfactory and acceptable than the conventional ones.

본 연구는 초등학교 영어수업에서 UCC 동영상과 PPT가 미국문화 이해도와 영어교과 흥미도에 어떤 영향을 미치는지 알아보았다. 실험집단은 UCC 동영상을 활용한 미국문화 수업, 통제집단은 PPT를 활용한 미국문화 수업을 초등학교 5학년 학생 68명을 대상으로 5개월 동안 시행하였다. 실험을 통해 도출된 결론은 다음과 같다. 실험집단의 학생들은 통제집단 학생들에 비해 문화 이해도가 유의미한 향상을 보인 것으로 분석되었다. 실험집단의 학생들은 통제집단 학생들에 비해 영어 교과에 대한 흥미도는 큰 차이를 보이지 않았지만, 영어 학습 동기와 영어 학습에 대한 흥미도는 통제집단에 비해 유의미한 차이를 보였다. 실험집단을 대상으로 한 UCC 동영상 활용에 대한 유용성과 흥미도 결과 UCC 동영상을 활용한 수업이 미국문화 이해도와 영어교과 흥미도에 효과가 있음을 알 수 있었다.

본 연구는 유비쿼터스 생활영어 체험학습장의 학습만족과 관련 있는 변인들 가운데 학습환경, 자신감, 학습흥미, 학습만족간의 연구모형으로 구성하여 이 연구모형의 경로를 분석하여 다음과 같은 결과를 얻었다. 첫째, 연구의 변인들 간에 상관관계를 살펴본 결과 유비쿼터스 생활영어 체험학습장을 이용하는 학습자의 학습환경, 자신감, 학습흥미, 학습만족 간에 상관관계가 있었다. 학습환경과 학습흥미, 학습환경과 학습만족, 자신감과 학습흥미 자신감과 학습만족, 학습흥미와 학습만족 간에 정적상관관계를 가졌다. 둘째, 설정된 요인들 간의 경로를 분석해본 결과, 이론모형이 모형 적합도 지수에 만족하여 경로모델이 도출되었다. 연구모형의 경로는 학습환경${\rightarrow}$자신감의 경로와 학습환경${\rightarrow}$학습흥미의 경로가 유의하였다. 그리고 학습환경${\rightarrow}$학습만족의 경로, 자신감${\rightarrow}$학습만족의 경로와 학습흥미${\rightarrow}$학습만족의 경로가 유의했다. 마지막으로, 유비쿼터스 생활영어 체험학습장의 학습환경은 학습자의 학습만족에 직접영향을 미치는 경로로 나타났다.

This study examined the effects of collocation-based instruction on L2 vocabulary acquisition and learners' interests in it. Fifty one students were randomly assigned to the experimental group (collocation-based instruction group) and to the control group. The participants' English vocabulary capacity was checked through pre and post tests, and two surveys were used to probe the learners' vocabulary learning behaviors and their interests in English vocabulary learning respectively. To better understand the participants' opinions and feelings on the collocation-based learning, follow-up interviews were also carried out. The results showed that second language (L2) learners' vocabulary capacity was significantly improved through collocation-based instruction. However, the participants' degree of interest in vocabulary learning did not reach our expectation partly because of external factors such as the Test for the College Scholastic Ability Test (CSAT) and lack of familiarity of collocations. Such results indicate that the high school students' rooted perception of putting importance on test-based language learning could not be easily changed since it is closely related to their immediate needs. Based on the results, this study suggested how to implement collocations into L2 classrooms effectively.
