The purpose of this study was to explore the factors influencing preschoolers' emergent English as a second language literacy skills in terms of maternal language behavior in Korean and English picture book reading. This study was also conducted in order to identify the pathways of each factor. The subjects consisted of 201 mothers and their 3~5 year-old children from middle income families living in Seoul, Incheon, Gyyounggi-do, and Chungcheongbuk-do. The results indicated that the factors influencing preschoolers' emergent English as a second language literacy skills acquisition were as follows : maternal beliefs about the value of picture book reading, the child's level of interest in picture book reading, the time spent on picture book reading and maternal language behavior during picture book reading activities. The results further indicate that it is important that the mother shares desirable language interaction with her children in their native language while reading not only Korean but also English picture books when aiming to improve preschoolers' emergent English literacy skills.

한국사회와 도서관계에 변화의 가속화가 요구되는 현 시점에서는 도서관경영을 보다 현실적 상황을 고려하여 운영하는 전략을 수립할 필요성이 있으며, 특성화사업을 통해 새로운 마케팅 기법을 적극적으로 도입할 필요가 있다. 수요를 창출하는 경영기법을 ‘마케팅'이라고 한다면 앞으로 수요가 확산될 서비스나 프로그램 중 하나가 영어독서와 영어도서관 설치에 대한 관심사라 할 수 있다. 이러한 현상을 최근 신문기사를 통해 개인, 기관 및 사교육기관 별로 정리 분석하였다. 분석결과 제시된 독서방식을 국내 도서관의 활성화 방안 중 하나로 적용하기 위하여 전통적인 자율독서프로그램을 국내 상황에 맞게 새롭게 분석, 전개하였다.

본 연구를 위하여 공공도서관의 경영과 서비스에 영향을 미치는 대학 입시제도의 변화와 국내 사교육시장의 실태를 분석하였다. 분석결과 우리나라에서는 미국, 유럽 등 선진국에서는 사례를 찾아보기 어려운 다양한 경쟁적 요소가 도서관서비스 시장에 존재하고 있음이 밝혀졌다. 이들은 도서관 입장에서 보면, 소속된 지역과 업무현장에서 자연스럽게 경쟁관계가 성립되어 상호 조직의 발전이 제한될 수 밖에 없으며, 결국 도서관 마케팅 측면에서 새로운 관계 정립이 필요하다. 도서관의 '영어도서관프로그램'을 새로운 서비스 확장 사업으로써, 마케팅레버리지(marketing leverage)로 활용하여 도서관이 공공기관으로서 의 단단한 입지와 도서관서비스 품질에 대한 만족도를 한층 더 높일 수 있도록 도서관 2곳을 선택하여 장서개발과 프로그램 운영 경험을 통해 모형을 고안, 제시하였다.

본 연구의 목적은 균형 잡힌 영어접근 프로그램이 유아들의 영어 읽기와 쓰기능력 증진에 효과적인지를 살펴보고자 하는 것이다. 이를 위해 D시의 유치원 만5세 유아 36명을(실험, 통제집단 각 18명씩) 대상으로 실험집단에 균형적 영어접근 프로그램을 8주간 주 2회 실시하였다. 본 연구의 검증을 위해 활용한 검사도구는 알파벳 읽기능력과 단어읽기능력은 이옥섭(1999)의 단어읽기 검사를 수정하여 사용하였으며, 책읽기 능력은 Sulzby(1985)의 읽기 발달단계를 검사도구로 사용하였다. 유아들의 쓰기발달 수준을 측정하기 위해 Hildreth(1936)와 Schikedanz(1986)의 쓰기 발달단계에 기초하여 이경화(1997)가 수정한 도구를 사용하였다. 수집된 자료는 SPSS 14.0 통계 프로그램을 사용하여 ANCOVA분석을 하였다. 연구결과를 요약하면, 첫째, 균형적 영어접근 프로그램이 유아들의 읽기능력 증진에 효과적임이 밝혀졌다. 하위 요인가운데 알파벳 읽기와 단어읽기는 통계적으로 유의미한 차이가 나타났으나 영어책읽기에는 차이가 나타나지 않았다. 둘째, 균형적 영어접근 프로그램이 유아들의 쓰기능력 발달에 효과적임이 밝혀졌다. 따라서, 균형적 영어접근 프로그램이 유아들의 영어 읽기와 쓰기능력 증진에 긍정적 효과가 있음을 알 수 있었다.

This essay reinterprets Joseph Conrad's The Heart of Darkness as satirical writing. In an experience-based fictional world, Conrad places imperial precursors who present themselves with a derogatory demeanor that stems from corrupt rapacity at its forefront. This rapacity is enabled by what European colonists believe to be a noble cause, regarded as a vehicle with which to enlighten African continent in his work. This essay reads this noble cause that allows such exorbitant and corrupt rapacity as a dominant element in the construction of Conrad's characters, particularly Kurtz, as objects of satire. Kurtz ends up beginning his calamitous descent into barbarism, mockingly quite opposite to what the colonial disciples misconceive themselves to be. In exhuming the satirical elements from the novel, this paper proves the significance of reading The Heart of Darkness as satire as an alternative reading to the racist book Chinua Achebe has accused it of.

This article explores how Richard Powers' The Gold Bug Variations, an interdisciplinary novel through the new concepts of biocriticism and bioliterature is connected with literature/art and science/technology. Powers uses Edgar Allen Poe's "The Gold Bug" and Johann Sebastian Bach's "The Goldberg Variations" for decoding DNA in order to analogize a genomic metaphor. He imagines literature as "the book of life" genome, written by DNA code due to the complexity and multiplicity of the genome. His novel, as 'genomic narrative,' shows the articulation of the genomic reading, and expression in the life language through the discourses of the information technology and the rhetorical tropes in biology. New biological ideas are continually required to articulate these processes. In the present tendency of the Human Genome Project, such advanced devices as biocybernetics offer the potential to open up new possibilities to researching the complexity of the genome. This can only happen if the following two ideas are followed: One is to comply with advanced technologies for processing the rapidly increasing data of the genome sequence; The other is to admit the necessary paradigm shift in biology. As shown above, the complexity and multiplicity of the genomic reality is not so simple. We must go beyond determinism, even if representation of a biological reality reveals the possibility of expressing its constituent elements by the advanced biotechnology. Consequently, in the unstoppable advances of the art of decoding the genome, The Gold Bug Variations interrelates to the interdisciplinary approaches through the rhetorical tropes that unfold the complex discursive world of the genome. Powers shows that the complex mechanisms of the genome in the microworld of every cell as the plot of "the book of life" can be designed and written using DNA language. At the same time, his genomic reading and writing demonstrate the historical processes of the shifting center of new genomic development and polysemous interpretation.

본 연구의 목적은 2015 개정 교육과정으로 개발된 고등학교 교과서의 읽기자료 특성을 조사하여 향후 독서교육 발전 방향을 제시하는 것이다. 이를 위해 국어, 수학, 영어, 통합과학, 통합사회 주요 교과를 대상으로 고등학교 교과서의 읽기자료를 분석하였고, 읽기자료의 분석 기준은 주제 유형, 목적, 학생 활동이었다. 연구 결과, 고등학교 통합사회와 통합과학 교과서에는 인간, 자유, 문화, 환경, 지구 등 다양한 주제의 읽기자료가 각 단원의 개념과 연관되어 제시되고 있었다. 특히 국어교과는 한단원에만 '한 학기에 한권의 책 읽기'라는 단원이 신설되어 있었다. 그러나 대부분 읽기자료가 효과적인 독서 전략이나 독서 방향에 대한 안내가 없으며, 읽기자료의 양이 부족하고 확장적 독서를 위한 자료나 정보가 부족함을 알 수 있었다. 교과서의 읽기자료가 각 단원의 학습 내용을 단순하게 보충하거나 개념 이해를 위한 단편적인 단서로만 제시되고 있음을 알 수 있었다. 또한, 교과의 읽기자료 제시가 나열식으로 단순하게 전개되어 있으며, 읽기자료가 학생들의 독서 흥미, 독서의 내면화 그리고 독서 확장을 위한 도구로는 미흡함을 알 수 있었다. 본 논문은 고등학교 교과서의 확장을 위한 읽기자료의 보조 자료를 제안하고, 교과서 구성 측면과 수업 방법 측면에 대한 제안을 통해 교과서와 독서교육의 발전적 관계를 모색해보았다.

최근 들어 스마트폰과 같은 휴대용 장치에 안드로이드 운영체제가 널리 탑재되면서, 안드로이드용 애플리케이션이 활발히 개발되고 있다. 본 논문에서는 텍스트를 음성으로 변환하는 안드로이드용 TTS(Text-to-Speech) 애플리케이션을 개발한다. 기존의 유사 TTS 애플리케이션들과 달리, 본 논문에서 개발한 애플리케이션은 사용자가 직접 입력한 임의의 텍스트를 음성으로 읽어주는 기능과 미리 저장되어 있는 전자책을 불러와 음성으로 읽어주는 기능을 모두 제공한다. 또한 한글과 영어를 모두 지원하기 때문에, 한글 텍스트와 영어 텍스트를 모두 사용할 수 있다. 따라서 본 애플리케이션은 여러 사용자에 의해 다양한 용도로 사용될 수 있다.

The present study is a literature survey aimed at . providing a means to improve the bibliographic apparatuses for Korean studies. The need for a study like this has proven urgent with the promotion of Korean studies both within and without in recent years. The study examines the social science literature on Korea produced in English between 1876 and 1945(A study is under way for literature since 1945 also). Selection of the titles for investigation was made on the basis of the relative importance of the works confirmed after reading book reviews and examining a variety of bibliographies. Each title selected was examined in terms of its subject matter, contribution to the discipline it belongs, references cited, relations with similar works in the field, and bibliographic features. Published books, dissertations both published or not published, and periodicals are included. Primarily a critical review it is also designed to provide background information on the present status of Korean studies and the historical development of Western studies on Korea. Special attenttion is given to the factors contributing to the foundations of the modern Western scholarchip on Korea in the late 19th century.

The word play on h(e)art-hunting has become a virtual commonplace in criticism of Chaucer′s Book of the Duchess. Less widely discussed is the third meaning of ME herte, "hurt." The "hart"/ "heart" pun is, however, only implicit in the poem, while the rhyme of "heart" and "hurt" in lines 883-84 makes clear the close association of the terms for Chaucer. Earlier commentators insisted that this was in fact an instance of rime riche or "identical rhyme," but if it is so it is striking that it is the unique instance of the rhyme in Chaucer, whose works are full of occasions for hurt hearts. The essay argues that this is, instead, an instance of near-rhyme and that the confusion in scribal spellings of ME hurten(with ′u,′ ′0,′ ′i,′ ′y,′ and ′e′ ) suggests uncertainties about its root vowel that modem linguistic study has not clarified completely. If the rhyme of herte ("hurt") with herte ("heart") is, however, established by these lines in BD, then it is probably reasonable to ask about all the occasions where characters in the poem are hurt by emotional or physical distress. In the cases of A1cyone and the Man in Blak, the hurt is revealed plainly as the death of a loved one, and Alcyone′s death and the Man in Blak′s return "homwarde" offer contrasting responses to the realization and acknowledgement of their loss. In the case of the Narrator, however, the exact nature of his "hurt" is nowhere made clear and the questions this Jack of clarity raises for the reader remain unanswered when the poem declares its "hert-huntyng" done. Further examination of the Narrator′s character and his role in the poem may reveal him to be a physician himself in need of healing, and this reading of his character may identify him as an ancestor as much of Chaucer′s Pardoner as of the Pilgrim Narrator of Canterbury Tales.
