  • The purpose of this paper was to examine various aspects of meaning negotiation process in online chatting. Korean college students were asked to engage in chatting on the Internet over the course of a semester-long period, and chatting transcripts were analyzed in terms of sources of communication breakdown, signals to indicate communication breakdown, strategies to overcome communication breakdown, and ways of closing meaning negotiation. According to the findings of the study, lack of background knowledge and incoherent string of sentences in text were two major barriers creating communication problems. Subjects were able to use signals to indicate their communication difficulties, and overcome them by using different strategies. In doing so, however, they were found to suffer a narrow range of signals and strategies, which showed their limited communicative ability in the management of interaction, and indicated a clear, strong need for an extension of discourse and strategic competences of Korean students for more effective and smoother transition of message in everyday interaction.

  • The interests in Machine Translation(MT) have gotten revitalized lately with the rapid expansion of internet users. MT technology has gone through several different stages of development, but the longest surviving methods usually maintains the following characteristics: the expand ability and flexibility based on proved linguistic formalism, the transfer method of translation, the continued efforts of systematic updates being made into the system. This paper introduces one such system, L&H Korean-English bidirectional MT system. This system uses Lexical-Functional Grammar as its linguistic framework. It also adopts the transfer method of MT and has been around on the market for over 10 years for other language pairs. Currently, the system covers over 10 different languages including Chinese, Japanese and Arabic, in addition to European languages. This paper will review the system in its core and discuss related tools and resources be ing used to enhance the quality of translation.

  • Most universities have been concerned about Liberal Education; whether is it on universal truth, or on training job-specialists? In consequence, the curricula have been reformed and promoted diversely. In this aspect, has been developed as convergence education. I selected two easy and short texts and tried to make the students practice and memorize the dialogues as many as possible. At the end of the class, the students presented given assignments, with theatrical performance. This study carried out the research of students' presentation and theatrical performances on the basis of group study, together with a survey of the results of questionnaires and lecture evaluation. Therefore it was a exploratory study to check out significance of variables through the correlation analysis. The students' questionnaires showed the improvement of their English ability, together with their knowledge about literature and drama, cultivating humanities through the theatrical performance. It may be said that has achieved multi-functional effects of English class converged literature, theatre and humanities even for one semester.

  • Serious games are selected by users according to the original goals such as education, treatment, training and so on. Therefore, those type of games are evaluated inside and outside the game about whether the goals are archived or not. Among quality test elements of serious game, assessment is about whether, in games, ability to verify goal achievement is included or not. In this paper, we examined the achievement-assessing function of serious game through several cases. Furthermore, to utilize for developing serious games for English learning, we designed a level system which achievement-assessing function is applied to. In this level system, we used 'competition and reward' as the core elements of game, and designed the system through simulation of which grades are level-designed along the user's English proficiency level based on notice of MEST(Ministry of Education, Science and Technology). This paper is expected to be useful reference for designing English learning game containing achievement assessing function.

  • This paper focuses on the development of a system that improves the convenience of foreign language learning and enhaces the learning ability of the target language through the use of IT devices. In addition to the basic grammar, the importance of pronunciation and intonation have somewhat crucial effect in everyday communication. Pronunciation and intonation of English are different according to the basic characteristics of a native language and these differences often cause problems in communication. The proposed system distinguishes acceptability in English communication process and requests the correction in realtime. The proposed system minimizes system intervention by collecting various voice signals of foreign language learners and setting that can be considered as acceptable threshold points. As a result, the learner can increase the learning efficiency with minimal interruption of the utterance caused by unnecessary system intervention.

  • Existing e-learning systems not only require complex admission processes but also do not give stepwise education methods according to individual learners' characteristic. These circumstances cause learners to lose educational interest so that their educational efficiency decreases. In particular, the present e-learning systems do not provide educational approaches suitable for infant and elementary children. Under this system, the e-learning education for children does not proceed completely without guardians. To solve this problem, we design and implement an English e-learning system for elementary children based on friendly and comfortable user interfaces. For children, the proposed system reflects their age and individual interesting per each e-learning stage. This system supports both the Web application platform and smart phone application platform for various client requirements. The proposed system manages 3 classes as English learning content. Learners can experience their own English e-learning course in each class, which is compiled by current educational ability. In addition to the general functions in e-learning system, the proposed system develops content buffering algorithm to reduce data traffic in server.

  • In this paper, we investigate the correlation between the amount of English sentences that Korean English learners (L2ers) are exposed to and their sentence processing patterns by examining what Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) language models (LMs) can learn about implicit syntactic relationship: that is, the filler-gap dependency. The filler-gap dependency refers to a relationship between a (wh-)filler, which is a wh-phrase like 'what' or 'who' overtly in clause-peripheral position, and its gap in clause-internal position, which is an invisible, empty syntactic position to be filled by the (wh-)filler for proper interpretation. Here to implement L2ers' English learning, we build LSTM LMs that in turn learn a subset of the known restrictions on the filler-gap dependency from English sentences in the L2 corpus that L2ers can potentially encounter in their English learning. Examining LSTM LMs' behaviors on controlled sentences designed with the filler-gap dependency, we show the characteristics of L2ers' sentence processing using the information-theoretic metric of surprisal that quantifies violations of the filler-gap dependency or wh-licensing interaction effects. Furthermore, comparing L2ers' LMs with native speakers' LM in light of processing the filler-gap dependency, we not only note that in their sentence processing both L2ers' LM and native speakers' LM can track abstract syntactic structures involved in the filler-gap dependency, but also show using linear mixed-effects regression models that there exist significant differences between them in processing such a dependency.

  • This study aimed to explore the effects of private tutoring expenses, parents' monitoring affection, their children's learning value and self-regulated learning abilities on middle-school boys' and girls' English Math academic achievement. The subjects were the 3rd middle-school 1,123 students taking the private tutoring of English and Math who participated in the Korea Child Youth Panel Surveys(KCYPS). The data were analyzed with descriptive statistics, correlations and hierarchical regressions. The main results of this study were as follows. Firstly, regardless of middle-school students' sex, as monthly average private tutoring expenses were more, the levels of parents' monitoring, and their children's learning value self-regulated learning abilities were higher, so middle-school students' academic achievement was higher. Secondly, regardless of middle-school students' sex, their self-regulated learning abilities were the highest predictors of English Math achievement. Also, their learning value and parents' monitoring influenced middle-school boys' English Math achievement in order. On the other hand, monthly average private tutoring expenses influenced middle-school girls' English Math achievement. Furthermore there were no moderating effects of parents' monitoring affection, their children's learning value and self-regulated learning abilities between monthly average private tutoring expenses and middle-school boys' and girls' English Math achievement. Finally, based on the results, the importance of parents and Home Economics was suggested in attaining middle-school students' higher academic achievement. Especially, Home Economics can play an important role of enhancing middle-school students' self-regulated learning abilities and learning value necessary for middle-school students' higher academic achievement.
