  • Co-operative (Co-op) education is a college program that integrates classroom studies with paid, productive and real-life work experience. A mandatory Co-op program for the degree is introduced with a sample curriculum from the Mechanical Engineering program at University of the Pacific. The mandatory Co-op program requires a minimum of 7 months of work experience with the option of pursuing a 12 month program. Students also have the opportunity of participating in an Engineering Industry Fellowship (EIF) program or an International Engineering Co-op program (IECP). University of the Pacific has engineering programs in Bio-Engineering, Civil Engineering, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Engineering Management, Engineering Physics, and Mechanical Engineering. All the programs are ABET-accredited except the Bio-Engineering program, which is relatively new. The Co-op employers evaluate the Co-op students at the end of the working period before returning to school, and the students also provide an evaluation of their Co-op experience. Co-op employer evaluations of student work are used in ABET assessment methods developed by the Mechanical Engineering program at University of the Pacific.

  • This study aims to conduct a case study of the Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM) outreach program development and their application. This program was operated by 184 middle and high school students at C University on October 2014. The major results of these studies were as follows: First, The theme of the outreach program consisted of four engineering areas, aerospace engineering, chemical engineering, architectural engineering, and mechatronics (robot) engineering; moreover, the materials for the students' workbook, the guidebook for teachers, and the program operation manual for staffs in a university were developed by working with four authors and ten subject matter experts. Second, the satisfaction level with the contents and activities was ranged from 4.24-4.31 out of 5 points. Third, the vitalizing activation plan was discussed for the sustainable development and operation of the STEAM outreach program.

  • In this paper, a systematic methodology is proposed for developing an outcome-based undergraduate Industrial and Systems Engineering Program at the Systems Engineering Department of King Fahd University of Petroleum & Minerals (KFUPM) in Saudi Arabia. This program is an upgrade of the Industrial Engineering and Operations Research (IE/OR) option, which has been in existence since 1984 and has been revised several times since then. The methodology and process used is motivated by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) 2000 criteria and has been employed to develop the program's objectives and outcomes. Subsequently, a curriculum is designed that is expected to deliver the objectives and outcomes. The paper presents the methodology, objectives, outcomes and the developed curriculum of the outcome-based program.

  • The purpose of this study was to develop a pre-training program of engineering college students for maximizing the effectiveness of internship or field training. To pursue this goal, literature review was conducted for data collection about college and corporate pre-training program for internship or field training and pre-training program(draft) was proposed. A questionnaire survey was conducted with engineering professors, students and graduates to identify the needs for pre-training program(draft) for internship or field training. Based on the results, the contents of pre-training program for internship or field training were composed of basic liberal arts, basic competency, real information related with corporation or job, and information exchange network. And key consideration for operating the pre-training program for internship or field training were proposed with the management department, regulation for the obligatory participation, meaningful organizing content, feedback of needs.

  • The Korea space launch vehicle-II (KSLV-II) program aims at developing a national launch vehicle system capable of launching 1.5 ton satellite into a sunsynchronous orbit. It is the succeeding program to the Naro launch vehicle program. The KSLV-II is a large-scale complex system which requires a systematic approach to all parts of the program. The KSLV-II program is currently developing a tailored systems engineering process for its need. It references practices and lessons learned from developing Naro launch vehicle. Standardized NASA processes and INCOSE processes were also referenced and compared during development of the process framework. This paper introduces the systems engineering processes developed for the KSLV-II program.

  • This paper describes two capstone senior design courses for the Mechanical Engineering program at University of the Pacific. The first course taught in the Fall semester is entitled "Engineering Design/Senior Project I." The second course taught in the Spring semester is entitled "Engineering Design/Senior Project II." All Mechanical Engineering students with senior standing are required to take these two classes in this sequence. At the end of every Spring semester, industrial advisors are invited to assess the final senior projects during an annual Senior Project Day. This assessment is performed using the Program Outcomes and Program Educational Objectives established for Pacific's Mechanical Engineering program. Since all Mechanical Engineering students are required to complete senior projects, this is a 100% evaluation process. After the evaluations are done, the data sets are compiled and reviewed by the faculty for assessment purposes. It is important to note that the industrial advisors perform the evaluations, but the faculty members assess the information to determine if modifications need to be made to the program or courses. In addition to the senior project evaluations, general feedback from Mechanical Engineering Industrial Advisory Committee (MEIAC) members is also useful for the outcomes-based assessment process in addition to the definition and evaluation of Program Outcomes and Program Educational Objectives.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the performance of ABEEK accredited engineering program in D University. Based on engineering students' perceptions, this study explores how well the students are aware of the accredited engineering program, what change has been made to the courses, to what extent they have been participating in class and interacting with teachers and other students, to what extent they have been actively participating in extra-curricular activities, and to what extent they have achieved program outcomes. The survey was conducted in Fall 2014. The results are as follows: First, the students are well aware of the accredited engineering program; however, they are rarely aware of program outcomes. Second, the students were more satisfied with the major and design courses compared to the MSC and general education courses. Third, the students were more actively participated in the major and design courses compared to the MSC and general education courses. Fourth, the students were passively engaged in extra-curricular activities. Finally, the program outcomes related to soft skills showed low-achievement.

  • Many engineering schools in Korea implement ABEEK programs. One of the core parts of ABEEK is accreditation criterion 2, the program outcomes and their appraisal. This paper tries to discuss the program outcomes and to study the impact of applying the program outcomes to one of the graduation requirements. We show simple survey results for implementing ABEEK programs concerning the program outcomes and their relation to graduation requirements. If the program outcomes are used as one of the graduation requirements, some graduates may satisfy the average grade point for graduation requirements but can not meet the program outcome criteria satisfied by other than regular classes. In this case, the graduate may have trouble to try to meet the program outcome criteria, since he may not be able to stay in school without taking classes. The problems of setting the levels of program outcomes as graduation requirements, non classwork related program outcomes, and work burden to professors should be also prudently reviewed for successful ABEEK implementation.

  • This paper was built for an activation of a merged education and development of non-subject, new type creative merged education program having effectivities. This program is disciplined a kind of flipped learning and camp program of 2 nights and 3 days. Given a problem which big enough and open-ended problem, multidisciplinary team that composed with engineering and design major students works the capstone design project. For ordinary engineering design process, 'how can we make?' was important. But in this program 'what can we make?' is more serious question. Our program was pursuing an creative idea that can induce innovation. Teaching or interference of professors was minimized and then students solve the problem theirselves by long time and liberal brainstorming. Last products is not real goods and only a proposal for manufacturing. Finally, the results are presented using ppt and board. After not only professors but also students of other teams can ask a question, resolve and comment on that proposal. The benefits of this program are that inner members of university take a whole process from planning and working to last evaluation. Besides economic benefit, they can secure an infrastructure for development of creative merged education program by running for several times and so can improve the program continuously. For an aspect of students, they can respond to recently highlighted creative experiences that required for recruitment.
