  • In the previous study, the air flow noise around 1.6 k~1.8 kHz was analyzed, and could be reduced by machining a groove in the bore of compressor inlet in front of the main blades of a compressor wheel. It was proven that this groove was very effective for removing the noise without critical sacrifice of compressor performance, and in addition, it did not noticeably deteriorate vehicle performance, drivability and acceleration. It is interesting that the type of groove tried for 1.6~1.8 kHz noise reduction could be effective for another air flow noise, 4 k~6 kHz which is the 3rd order frequency range of turbocharger speed. This study tried various shapes of grooves for minimizing engine performance difference as well as reducing the 3rd order noise. Finally, it was shown that the groove should be round for the engine performance, and an optimal size exist for the noise and the engine performance.

  • The performance of cooling fan is affected by many peripheral parts, such as radiator, condenser, engine block and etc. Higher power has been requested in more confined automobile engine room. Thus, cooling performance becomes very important to remove the heat generated from the automobile engine more efficiently. In this paper, the performance of cooling fan including effects of engine block is investigated by using a fan tester based on the ASHRAE and the AMCA standards. A flow rate - gap distance curves and a flow rate - engine block constant curves are obtained from this study.

  • In the beginning of vehicle development, it is difficult to define the concept of engine mounting system. With only the property of vehicle, we have to find the direction of engine mounting system. And it is important to find common mounts for several engine variation in order to reduce the cost and manage mounts efficiently. This paper introduces the software which has developed for engine mounting system analysis. And its function and usefulness are explained in paper. The examples have correlated between the analysis model and real model to raise the accuracy during development of engine mounting system are shown in paper.

  • This study introduces a series of processes aimed at understanding the noise characteristics generated by jet engines and devising measures to mitigate them through interdisciplinary capstone design projects. During the project execution, educational methods were applied to foster 4Cs (creativity, communication, collaboration, critical thinking) competencies. Project objectives were set through team discussions, and individual team members were assigned primary roles to act as subgroup leaders. As a result, the project was executed as follows: combustion tests were conducted using an SR-30 turbojet engine to generate noise, and the locations and characteristics of the noise sources were identified using beamforming techniques and frequency analysis applied to a 30-microphone array. Additionally, chevron nozzles were designed and fabricated to confirm their noise reduction performance.

  • A new active muffler system has been developed and its superior performance on both noise reduction and engine torque increase is demonstrated with experiment. Main characteristic of the proposed muffler system is the use of destructive interference by transmission path difference of divided exhaust pipes to reduce major exhaust noise components thereby overcoming problems of other active exhaust noise control methods. The exhaust pipe is divided into two sections and joined again downstream. One divided pipe has a sliding mechanism to vary its length, which is controlled to make half wavelength transmission path difference for the major engine rpm frequency. In this system one divided pipe is used to control major rpm frequency and its Harmonics and another pipe is used to control noise component double the frequency of rpm. An after-market tuning muffler, which has very simple internal structure and minimal back pressure, is also installed to remove remaining wideband noise. To make the system to be small enough to be practical, conventional muffler is also installed and used in low rpm range and active muffler is only employed in high rpm range. Noise reduction of the proposed system is comparable to conventional passive muffler. The engine dynamo test has proved the proposed system can recover almost all the torque lost by conventional muffler.

  • Yacht have an high powered main engine relatively light hull, so the noise generated from the engine have a bad influence upon the crew and passenger. Recently, cruise yacht is made an attempt by domestic production skill, however the insulation skill of the noise made by the main engine is not satisfy the real purchasing power of the buyer. Like this, yacht cabin's noise level is becoming the barometer to decide the purchase. the method to insufficient. However, if we use the skill of the monitoring equipment and the genetic algorithm system, the circumference of the main engine can be enclosed by an high quality absorbtion wall and the noise levels of the cabins are improved. In this study, the sound absorbtion barrier is experimentally researched by change the volume and the length of the neck for the Helmholtz resonator as the resonator can absorb the noise effectively.

  • In this study, we analyze the rattle noise of a power takeoff (PTO) driveline and develop a PTO driveline resonance model. We measured the rattle noise of the PTO driveline on the output shaft and, by analyzing the rattle noise in the time domain, we determine that the engine expansion stroke period matches the sound pressure of rattle noise. This finding helped us demonstrate that the rattle noise is caused by the collision between the PTO driving gear and the gear driven by the engine expansion stroke; the torsional vibration caused by this collision is affected by the angular velocity fluctuation of the PTO drive shaft. By measuring the angular velocity of the PTO drive shaft, we confirm that the angular velocity fluctuation of the engine flywheel tends to excessively amplify the PTO drive shaft angular velocity fluctuation. We conclude that the resonance, which occurs when the operating frequency of the engine is close to the natural frequency of the tractor power transmission system, causes the excessive angular velocity fluctuation of the PTO drive shaft. We performed a modal analysis of the PTO driveline resonance and, using the characteristic equation, we show that the resonance occurs when the engine rotation speed is close to 850 rpm, which matches the natural frequency of the PTO driveline.

  • This paper presents vibration control performance of active engine mount system installed with the magneto-rheological (MR) mount and the piezostack mount. The performance is evaluated via hardware-in-the-loop-simulation(HILS) method. As a first step, six degrees-of freedom dynamic model of an in-line four-cylinder engine which has three points mounting system is derived by considering the dynamic behaviors of MR mount and piezostack mount. As a second step, sliding mode controller(SMC) is synthesized to actively control the imposed vibration In order to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed active engine mount, vibration control performances are evaluated under various engine operating speeds (wide frequency range) using HILS method and presented in time and frequency domain.

  • For development of low fuel consumption vehicle, design of engine can he changed and it brings collateral effect. Abnormal vibration is one of bad effect of high efficiency engine and it can be got over by active engine mount system. For development of active engine mount system, an adequate experimental equipment is required which contain characteristic of real engine movement. To make adequate experimental equipment, regulated force vibrating system including characteristics of vehicle chassis is required.
