The Effects of Hydrogen on DME HCCI Combustion (DME 예혼합 압축착화 엔진에서 수소의 영향)

  • The aim of this paper is controlling ignition timing and load in homogeneous charge compression ignition (HCCI) combustion with low cetane number fuel, hydrogen. Homogeneous charge compression ignition (HCCI) combustion is an advanced combustion technology that achieves higher thermal efficiency and lower $NO_x$ emissions than that of conventional combustion system. Dimethyl ether (DME), which has been researched widely as the most attractive alternative fuel of diesel, is attractive for HCCI combustion because of the easy evaporation. In this study, the single cylinder DME engine operated with a direct injection system has been used to investigate combustion processes and emissions of DME HCCI with a premixed hydrogen supply. The experiment was carried out under various engine speed and fraction rates of hydrogen. As a result, the increase of fraction rates of hydrogen retard the DME ignition timing and eliminated the knocking during high engine speed condition. IMEP was increased with increase of fraction rates of hydrogen by 30%. 40% of the fraction rates of hydrogen resulted in misfiring. The $NO_x$ emission was reduced by increasing the fraction rates of hydrogen, but HC emission was increased.

  • Aircraft battery is the core equipment of an aircraft that supplies engine starting power and emergency power, and it must be charged to ensure sufficient capacity at all times and maintain high reliability to ensure stable power supply. The battery of the T-50 series aircraft is designed to enable the engine to start up to two times in temperatures as low as -18℃ and above. However, intermittent failures in engine starting have been observed during winter. In this paper, we analyze the failure phenomena occurring during low-temperature charging of the battery and improve the charging algorithm based on the analysis and test. Additionally, the results of start simulation tests show that the battery charging defects at low temperatures are resolved, and an improvement in the charging performance is confirmed; thus, validating the effectiveness of the new algorithm.

An Experimental Study on Spray Characteristics of Directly Injected Bio-Ethanol-Gasoline Blended Fuel By Varying Fuel Temperature (직접분사식 바이오 에탄올-가솔린 혼합연료의 연료온도에 따른 분무 특성에 관한 실험적 연구)

  • As environment problem became a worldwide issue, countries are tightening regulations regarding greenhouse gas reduction and improvement of air pollution problems. With these circumstances, one of the renewable energies produced from biomass is getting attention. Bio-ethanol, which is applicable to SI engine, showed a positive effect on the PFI (Port Fuel Injection) type. However, Ethanol has a problem in homogeneous mixture formation because it has high latent heat of vaporization characteristics and in the GDI (Gasoline Direct Injection) type, mixture formation is required quickly after fuel injection. Particularly, South Korea is one of the countries with great temperature variation among seasons. With this reason, South Korea supply fuel additive for smooth engine operation during winter. Therefore, experimental study and investigation about application possibility of blending fuel is necessary. This paper demonstrates the spray characteristics by using the CVC direct injection and setting the bio-ethanol blending fuel temperature close to the temperature during each seasons: -7, 25, $35^{\circ}C$. The diameter and the width of the CVC are 86mm and 39mm. High-pressure fuel supply system was used for target injection pressure. High-speed camera was used for spray visualization. The experiment was conducted by setting the injection pressure and ambient pressure according to each temperature of bio-ethanol blending fuel as a parameter. The result of spray visualization experiment demonstrates that as the temperature of the fuel is lower, the atomization quality is lower, and this increase spray penetration and make mixture formation difficult. Injection strategy according to fuel temperature and bio-ethanol blending rate is needed for improving characteristics.

  • All components such as structure, engine, electrical equipment, wire etc. should have certified qualities and functions for safe flight. The wire like a blood vessel of man is connected with most components and supply a electrical signal or power to them and only certified wire through a lot of tests such as rating, flame resistance, self-extinguishing, protection of EMI etc. must be used in aircraft. In other words, the wire should observe many certification requirements because it is one of the most important components.

  • During cold operation period, fuel injection system directly contributes the unburned hydrocarbon formation in spark ignition engines. The relationship between injection parameters and HC emission behavior was investigated through a series of experiments. Spray behavior of port fuel injectors was characterized through a quantitative evaluation of mass concentration of liquid fuel by a patternator and PDA. 6-hole injector was found to produce finer spray than single hole one. Using a purpose-built test rig, the wall wetting fuel was measured, which was mostly affected by wall temperature. Varying coolant temperature($20{\sim}80^{\circ}C$), HC emissions were measured in a production engine. With respect to the different types of injectors, HC emission was also measured. In the 6-hole injector application, the engine produced less HC emission in low coolant temperature region. Though it produces much more amount of wetting fuel, it has the advantages of finer atomization quality. In high coolant temperature region, there was little effect between different types of injectors. The control schemes to reduce HC emissions during cold start could be suggested from the findings that the amount of fuel supply and HC emission could be reduced by utilizing fine spray and high intake wall temperature.

  • New concept spark plug was developed to study its influence on the combustion characteristics of SI engine. It has pre-ignition chamber at the lower end of spark plug and flame hole, in which fresh mixture gas can be put in through the flame hole without any fuel supply system. This spark plug was tested in a single cylinder engine dynamometer for different air fuel ratio to measure the fuel consumption rate, emission gases, and MBT timing. And constant volume combustion chamber was made to understand flame characteristics of spark plug. New spark plug induced fast burn compared to the conventional spark plug and its effects were increased in lean air fuel ratio. Pre-ignition chamber spark plug with 5 holes which had adjusted size was more stable and effective in combustion performance than pre-ignition chamber spark plug with 1 hole. And its effects showed larger differences in lean air fuel ratio than stoichiometric condition. Flame kernel and flame growth process of conventional spark plug and pre-ignition chamber spark plug studied by flame visualization of schlieren method.

  • For thrust motion of high speed underwater torpedo the special hydro reactive fuels that burns in vapor water and water supply from aboard is used. The main component of this hydro reactive fuel is the powder of active metal (Mg, Al) that can burn in water vapor with large heat generation in the rocket combustion chamber. The thermodynamic analysis of combustion properties of the burning of the particles of these active metal in the vapor water have been carried out. The conception for the possible content variants of the hydro reactive fuels have been discussed using the geometrical and thermodynamic combustion conditions with the basic recommendation for contents of designed hydro reactive fuels in future.

  • A hybrid sounding rocket carrying about 10kg payload reaching up to 15km altitude has been designed. The commercial seamless aluminium tube and liquid ${N_2}O$ without pressurization devices were chosen as rocket motor case and oxidizer supply system respectively. A hybrid rocket engine performing required propulsion impulse is designed with time dependent internal ballistic scheme. Engine performance, aerodynamic characteristics, and trajectory were predicted by a integral technique of internal ballistics and external ballistics. The design results were evaluated by comparison with previous experimental data, technical reports, and literatures.

  • The design of the fuel injector is one of the important operating factors that determine the extent of mixing of air and fuel in an MEMS gas turbine engine. In this study, we consider a system with three inlet ports with each port having multiple injectors. We perform a parametric study by varying the arrangement of fuel injectors and difference of ratio of fuel supply. The results are presented in terms of the premixed flow distribution and equivalence ratio.

  • DME(Di-methyl Ether) has been expected to be one of the promising alternative fuels for compression ignition engines due to its low emission characteristics for particulate matter. However, its physical properties such as density, bulk modulus and viscosity are not comparable to those of conventional diesel fuel. Especially, problems caused by low lubricity and high compressibility need to be understood more thoroughly, when a DME fuel is used for compression ignition engine, especially with mechanical fuel supply system. In this study, measurement and calculation of DME's bulk modulus were carried out over the range of temperatures from $-3^{\circ}C$ to $53^{\circ}C$, and pressures from 50 bar to 250 bar using an experimental apparatus built in this work. The results show that DME is prone to be compressed more easily compared to diesel fuel. A comparison of bulk modulus with butane and propane were also made in this work.
