Fatigue fracture of engine connecting-rod bolts is encountered frequently during the developement of high-speed engines. Only the engine dyno test is a currently reliable fatigue durability assessment method. It is because the available rig tests cannot mimic the engine running condition completely, and because the finite element analysis cannot provide realistic stresses near the bolt thread that is modeled as a cylinder. This paper introduces a methodology to assess the fatigue durability of the connecting-rod bolts using the finite element analysis. The methods to contruct the bolt model, to extract the critical bolt stresses for the fatigue analysis, and to obtain the bolt fatigue endurance limit experimentally are discussed. Reliability of the method is verified indirectly.

Propulsion in waves is a complex physical process that involves interactions between a hull, a propeller, a shaft and a prime mover which is often a diesel engine. Among the relevant components, the diesel engine plays an important role in the overall system dynamics. Therefore, using a proper model for the diesel engine is essential to achieve the reasonable accuracy of the transient simulation of the entire system. In this paper, a simulation model of a propulsion system in waves is presented with emphasis on modeling a two-stroke marine diesel engine: the framework for building such a model and its mathematical descriptions. The models are validated against available measurement data, and a sensitivity analysis for the transient performance of the diesel engine is carried out. Finally, the results of the system simulations under various wave conditions are analyzed to understand the physical processes and compare the efficiency for different cases.

For this study, four Internet Search Engine (Excite, 1-Detect, Simmany, Yahoo Korea!), Inspec Classification and two distionaries were used. The major findings and result of analysis are summarized as follows : 1. The basis of the classification is the scope of topics, the system logic, the clearness, the efficiency. 2. The scope of topics is analyzed comparitively by the number of items from each Search Engine. In the result, Excite is the most superior of the four 3. The system logic is analyzed comparitively by the casuality balance and consistency of the items from each Search Engine. In the result, Excite is the most superior of the four 4. The clearness is analyzed comparitively by the clearness and accuracy of items, the recognition of the searchers. In the result, Excite is the most superior of the four. 5 The efficiency is analyzed comparitively by the exactness of indexing and decreasing the effort of the searchers. In the result, Yahoo Korea! is the most superior of the four. 6 The compatible model of Internet Search Engine classification is estavlished to uplift the scope of topics, the system logic, the clearness, and the efficiency. The model divides the area mainly based upon the topics and resources using‘bookmark’and‘shadow’concept.

In the process of liquid rocket engine design, obtaining method of the dynamic characteristics of engine should be emphasized typically to determine the control logic and algorithms of the throttle valves in the propellant feed pipeline. However, determining the dynamic characteristics of an engine through the autonomous test is very hard and laborious, so that the numerical approach is prevailing. In this study, using the previously developed dynamic analysis model of the engine around the steady state, we introduced a disturbance to this model, and obtained the dynamic response in the time domain. And by applying the well-known Levy method to this temporal response, we could deduce the transfer function of that system that can give us various information of engine and can be manipulated to design the control system.

It is essential to develop a transient analysis model for the turbopump-fed type liquid rocket engine development, especially for deriving the number of test and its parameters. In this study we proposed a mathematical model of turbopump-fed type liquid rocket engine, and inspected transient mode changes of a rocket engine according to variations of thrust control valve opening ratio. To verify the results, we solved the same problem with AnaSyn software from Russia, and concluded that the results of transient code we developed deviated within 2% from AnaSyn results. Also, using the transient engine analysis code we showed the possibility to find out the system level design Parameters of the components. For example, we modeled a pressure stabilizer which is used to control the consistency of mixture ratio in the gas generator as forced damping system, and found the stability range of the natural frequency and the damping ratio with the transient engine system analysis code.

This paper presents an efficient method to analyze noise and vibration of marine diesel engines mounted on flexible hull structure. The analysis model should in general include the hull structure, leading to lots of computational efforts. To minimize the computational efforts, in this paper, the transfer synthesis utilizing the receptance at the mounting points is proposed. The procedure is then verified by comparing the results with those from the full model calculation. The effects of flexible hull structure on the acoustic power from engine block are finally investigated. It is found that the effect of the hull is significant when the receptance of hull structure is similar to or greater than that of mount or engine block.

In this study, a mathematical model for analyzing the shifting transients of the passenger car with an automatic transmission is proposed. The proposed model comprises a power transmission system and a vehicle system, which are coupled. In order to extract the modeling parameters, on-road car test is carried out. The model is composed of a detailed powertrain, an engine/AT housing, a simplified suspension system, tires and a vehicle body model. On the test, the vehicle accelerations and pitch ratio are measured by using accelerometers and a gyro sensor. The speeds, the brake signal, and the throttle position are taken from sensors which already exist in the vehicle. Considering natural ftequencies, which is calculated from the measured accelerations, and the characteristic equation, vehicle model parameters are identified. Dynamic behaviors during upshift or downshift are simulated using the proposed vehicle model. By comparing and analyzing the simulation result and on-road car test data, the vibration of the Engine/AT housing influences the shifting transients. The effect of model parameters are also studied. Among model parameters, the location of engine mountings influences the vibration of the vehicle body.

Thermal deformation of cast iron exhaust manifold for turbo diesel engine is investigated by finite element analysis (FEA). The FE model included the temperature dependent material properties as well as the interactions between exhaust manifold, cylinder head and fasteners. It also considers the sliding behavior of the flanges of exhaust manifold on cylinder head when either expansion or contraction of the exhaust manifold exceeds the fastener pretension. The result of analysis revealed that remarkable thermal deformation along the longitudinal direction. Compressive plastic deformation at high temperature remained tensile stress in manifold and resulted in longitudinal contraction at ambient temperature. The amount of contraction at each fastener position was predicted and compared with experimental results. Analysis results revealed that the model predicted deformation qualitatively, but more elaborated cyclic hardening behavior would be necessary to predict the deformation quantitatively.

A numerical program has been developed for the simulation of automotive engine cooling system. The program determines the mass flow rate of engine coolant circulating the engine cooling system and radiator cooling air when the engine speed is adopted by appropriate empirical correlation. The program used the method of thermal balance at individual element through the model for radiator component in radiator analysis. This study has developed the program that predicts the coolant mass flow rate, inlet and outlet temperatures of each component in the engine cooling system (engine, transmission, radiator and oil cooler) in its state of thermal equilibrium. This study also combined the individual programs and united into the total performance analysis program of the engine cooling system operating at a constant vehicle speed. An air conditioner system is also included in this engine cooling system so that the condenser of the air conditioner faces the radiator. The effect of air conditioner to the cooling performance, e.g., radiator inlet temperature, of the radiator and engine system was examined. This study could make standards of design of radiator capacity using heat rejection with respect to the mass flow rate of cooling air. This study is intended to predict the performance of each component at design step or to simulate the system when specification of the component is modified, and to analyze the performance of the total vehicle engine cooling system.

In this study, performance analysis modeling of two spool mixed flow type turbofan engine according to steady-state and transient is performed. The target engine is selected as F100-PW-229 from Pratt & Whitney, and main engine components including fan, high pressure compressors, combustion, high pressure turbines, low pressure turbines, mixer, convergent-divergent nozzle are modeled. The cooling effect of turbine through secondary flow path are considered in engine simulation model. We develop in-house Matlab/Simulink-based engine performance analysis program capable of analyzing internal engine state and compare it with GASTURB which is generally used as a commercial engine analysis program.
