  • Railway has recently played an important role in preventing global warming caused by green house gases and furthering a low carbon green growth, The various railway research centers have conducted facilitated studies on saving energy. In particular, urban railway has emerged as the best means of public transportation in terms of punctuality, safety and environmentally friendliness. There are various ways to save energy in terms of operation of urban railway system, and they can be generally divided into hardware aspects that pertain to structure of vehicles and development of control system and software aspects that pertain to effective operation of trains based on operation patterns and diagram control. In this paper, we investigated drive assistance system for railway energy efficiency. The railway operation patterns and train diagram management programs were researched.

  • Recently, integrated electric propulsion system has been vigorously adopted into naval vessels. To enhance effectiveness and efficiency of power management in these propulsion systems, this paper investigates necessity of energy storage devices and their operation strategies. By introducing the energy storage devices, engine can operate at higher efficiency point and accordingly costs for fuel and maintenance are significantly reduced. In addition, transient performance can also be improved with support of the devices and it leads to stable operation of shipboard power bus. To validate the proposal of this paper, computer simulation has been conducted with real load data of existing electric propulsion system.

  • Recently advanced countries are making every effort to promote the efficiency of electric power production and supply, to deal with the environmental problems, and to develop the new energy. In particular, they are driving forward to develop various technologies for electric power in mid-long term, that are technology for building infrastructure of power transportation, establishing service network for account management using electronic technologies, elevating economic productivity by innovative electronic technologies, control-ling the discharge of global warming gas, using clean efficient energy, and so forth. However, power technology of Korea lagged behind than technology of advanced countries. Also, resources for developing power technology are limited in our country. Therefore, it is necessary to improve the efficiency of R&D investment. For it, our country must compare and analyze with technologies of advanced countries which are taking competitive advantage in the main future energy. Through comparative analysis, limited R&D resources of our country must be concentrated on technologies that can secure competitive advantage from now on.

High-efficiency deep geological repository system for spent nuclear fuel in Korea with optimized decay heat in a disposal canister and increased thermal limit of bentonite

  • To use nuclear energy sustainably, spent nuclear fuel, classified as high-level radioactive waste and inevitably discharged after electricity generation by nuclear power plants, must be managed safely and isolated from the human environment. In Korea, the land area is limited and the amount of high-level radioactive waste, including spent nuclear fuels to be disposed, is relatively large. Thus, it is particularly necessary to maximize disposal efficiency. In this study, a high-efficiency deep geological repository concept was developed to enhance disposal efficiency. To this end, design strategies and requirements for a high-efficiency deep geological repository system were established, and engineered barrier modules with a disposal canister for pressurized water reactor (PWR)-type and pressurized heavy water reactor type Canada deuterium uranium (CANDU) plants were developed. Thermal and structural stability assessments were conducted for the repository system; it was confirmed that the system was suitable for the established strategies and requirements. In addition, the results of the nuclear safety assessment showed that the radiological safety of the new system met the Korean safety standards for disposal of high-level radioactive waste in terms of radiological dose. To evaluate disposal efficiency in terms of the disposal area, the layout of the developed disposal areas was assessed in terms of thermal limits. The estimated disposal areas were 2.51 km2 and 1.82 km2 (existing repository system: 4.57 km2) and the excavated host rock volumes were 2.7 Mm3 and 2.0 Mm3 (existing repository system: 4.5 Mm3) for thermal limits of 100 ℃ and 130 ℃, respectively. These results indicated that the area and the excavated volume of the new repository system were reduced by 40-60% compared to the existing repository system. In addition, methods to further improve the efficiency were derived for the disposal area for deep geological disposal of spent nuclear fuel. The results of this study are expected to be useful in establishing a national high-level radioactive waste management policy, and for the design of a commercial deep geological repository system for spent nuclear fuels.

An Intercomparison of Counting Efficiency and the Performance of Two Whole-Body Counters According to the Type of Phantom

  • Background: Whole-body counters are widely used to evaluate internal contamination of the internal presence of gamma-emitting radionuclides. In internal dosimetry, it is a basic requirement that quality control procedures be applied to verify the reliability of the measured results. The implementation of intercomparison programs plays an important role in quality control, and the accuracy of the calibration and the reliability of the results should be verified through intercomparison. In this study, we evaluated the reliability of 2 whole-body counting systems using 2 calibration methods. Materials and Methods: In this study, 2 whole-body counters were calibrated using a reference male bottle manikin absorption (BOMAB) phantom and a Radiation Management Corporation (RMC-II) phantom. The reliability of the whole-body counting systems was evaluated by performing an intercomparison with International Atomic Energy Agencyto assess counting efficiency according to the type of the phantom. Results and Discussion: In the analysis of counting efficiency using the BOMAB phantom, the performance criteria of the counters were satisfied. The relative bias of activity for all radionuclides was -0.16 to 0.01 in the Fastscan and -0.01 to 0.03 in the Accuscan. However, when counting efficiency was analyzed using the RMC- II phantom, the relative bias of $^{241}Am$ activity was -0.49 in the Fastscan and 0.55 in the Accuscan, indicating that its performance criteria was not satisfactory. Conclusion: The intercomparison process demonstrated the reliability of whole-body counting systems calibrated with a BOMAB phantom. However, when the RMC-II phantom was used, the accuracy of measurements decreased for low-energy nuclides. Therefore, it appears that the RMC-II phantom should only be used for efficiency calibration for high-energy nuclides. Moreover, a novel phantom capable of matching the efficiency of the BOMAB phantom in low-energy nuclides should be developed.

Estimation of ship operational efficiency from AIS data using big data technology

  • To prevent pollution from ships, the Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) is a mandatory guideline for all new ships. The Ship Energy Efficiency Management Plan (SEEMP) has also been applied by MARPOL to all existing ships. SEEMP provides the Energy Efficiency Operational Indicator (EEOI) for monitoring the operational efficiency of a ship. By monitoring the EEOI, the shipowner or operator can establish strategic plans, such as routing, hull cleaning, decommissioning, new building, etc. The key parameter in calculating EEOI is Fuel Oil Consumption (FOC). It can be measured on board while a ship is operating. This means that only the shipowner or operator can calculate the EEOI of their own ships. If the EEOI can be calculated without the actual FOC, however, then the other stakeholders, such as the shipbuilding company and Class, or others who don't have the measured FOC, can check how efficiently their ships are operating compared to other ships. In this study, we propose a method to estimate the EEOI without requiring the actual FOC. The Automatic Identification System (AIS) data, ship static data, and environment data that can be publicly obtained are used to calculate the EEOI. Since the public data are of large capacity, big data technologies, specifically Hadoop and Spark, are used. We verify the proposed method using actual data, and the result shows that the proposed method can estimate EEOI from public data without actual FOC.

  • 파리기후협약에서 한국은 2030년까지 온실가스 배출전망(BAU) 대비 37% 감축이라는 의욕적인 목표를 제출하였다. 그리고 대응방안의 하나로 지능형 전력망인 스마트 그리드가 제시되었다. 스마트 그리드의 적용되기 위해서는 다양한 분야에 EMS(Energy Management System)가 설치 및 운영되어야 하는데, 수요자의 인식부족과 시스템 ROI의 한계로 보급이 지연되고 있는 상황이다. 따라서 최근에는 설치된 EMS의 효율을 높이기 위한 다양한 데이터 분석과 제어기술이 제시되고 있다. 본 연구에서는 IoT로 수집된 빅데이터를 SARIMA 모델로 분석하여 예측함으로써 공공 스포츠 시설의 에너지 사용량을 절검하여 운영하는 계측제어 알고리듬을 제시한다.

  • Demand side management can be defined as series of planning and programs to change the electric usage pattern of customers from their normal ones with a least cost while meeting customers electric demand. In general, conventional demand side management programs can be classified into two groups, one of which is a load management and the other is energy efficiency. In this paper, the load management tariff programs in Korea are explored in terms of their effect on the peak demand reduction.

비주거용 건물의 외피 리모델링을 통한 에너지성능향상 방안에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Non-residential Building Envelope Remodeling for Energy Efficiency)

  • 최근 민간건축 경기 침체가 거듭되면서 '신축' 시장 대비 비용 절감 효과는 물론, 자원절약 및 환경보호 효과를 거둘 수 있다는 긍정적인 반응과 함께 에너지성능향상형 리모델링 시장의 규모가 확대되고 있다. 서울시의 경우 2008년 시범사업을 시작으로 기존 건물에 대해 '건물에너지이용합리화사업(BRP)'를 추진, 시설개선사업을 통해 에너지 절감 및 이용 효율을 향상시킬 수 있도록 융자지원을 하고 있다. 2012년 보도자료에 따르면 254개소의 민간건축물이 참여, 친환경녹색건축물로 조성됨에 따라 온실가스 4만 1천톤/년을 감축, 석유환산 시 1만4천 TOE의 절감에 해당되어 매년 75억원의 에너지비용 절감효과를 보이고 있다고 한다. 본 연구는 기존 건물의 에너지 효율화 대책으로 리모델링 시 우선적으로 고려해야 할 에너지성능향상 방안 중 건축적 요소인 외피를 연구범위로 설정, 그 방안을 모색하였다. 그리고 해석모델에 적용, 분석함으로써 기존 건물의 에너지 절감효과, 즉 건물의 에너지성능향상 효과를 제시하였다. 연구의 범위가 외피 리모델링만을 고려한 건물의 에너지사용량을 감소시키는 단열보강 등의 목적지향적인 방법일 수 있겠으나, 대부분의 비주거용 업무시설의 경우 임대형이라는 점을 고려하였을 때 건축적 기술만을 적용한 방법의 모색은 실제 리모델링 시 가장 보편적인 기초자료가 될 수 있으므로 연구의 의미가 있다고 할 수 있다.

  • 지구온난화 및 기후 변화에 따른 재난, 이상기온, 질병 등 각종 사회 문제들이 대두됨에 따라, 에너지 절감 및 효율화를 위한 기술 개발이 증대되고 있다. 주택, 상업건물, 공공 건물 분야에서 소비되는 에너지는 우리나라 전체 에너지 사용의 22%를 차지함에 따라, 건물에너지 절감은 전체 에너지 절감에서 매우 중요한 요소이며, 이를 위한 방안이 추진되고 있다. 기존의 건물에서는 에너지 효율화를 위해 열 손실에 대한 대책 마련 및 에너지 저소비형 장비 사용 등의 수동적 방법을 사용하였으나, 최근에는 ICT 기술과 융합하여 에너지 사용의 측정, 모니터링, 통제를 통해 지속적으로 에너지 낭비 요소를 감지 및 제거하는 방식의 건물 에너지 효율화를 위한 능동적 기술이 대두되고 있다. 에너지 효율화를 이용하여 에너지 절감 장비를 사용하더라도, 낭비 상황을 제어하지 않으면 실질적이고 지속적인 에너지 절감 효과를 달성하기 어렵게 된다. 이 논문에서는 국내외 건물 에너지 효율화를 위한 기술 개발 현황을 소개하고, 능동적 에너지 절감을 위한 이슈를 고찰한다.
