  • We synthesized lithium zirconate using solid-state reaction and analyzed thermal properties (TG/DTA) of starting materials and the synthesized one. When $Li_2ZrO_3$ powder was exposed to $CO_2$ environment at $500^{\circ}C$, 93% of the theoretical absorption weight was gained within 280 min with fairly high sorption rate. Almost all the absorbed $CO_2$ was generated by heating the sample to $800^{\circ}C$. We also investigated densification behavior of $Li_2ZrO_3$ under $CO_2$ environment. By sintering $Li_2ZrO_3$ at $760^{\circ}C$ using 2-step process, we obtained dense product, composed mainly of $Li_2ZrO_3\;and\;ZrO_2$, with relative density of 92%.

  • Atomic force microscopy (AFM) simulation for Si (001) surface defects was conducted by using density functional theory (DFT). Three major defects on the Si (001) surface are difficult to analyze due to external noises that are always present in the images obtained by AFM. Noise-free surface defects obtained by simulation can help identify the real surface defects on AFM images. The surface defects were first optimized by using a DFT code. The AFM tip was designed by using five carbon atoms and positioned on the surface to calculate the system's energy. Forces between tip and surface were calculated from the energy data and converted into an AFM image. The simulated AFM images are noise-free and, therefore, can help evaluate the real surface defects present on the measured AFM images.

  • This paper presents the process of turbine development for Organic Rankine Cycle(ORC) system. Development of turbine for ORC system is hot issue in the electric generation market due to the characteristic of organic refrigerant which the evaporate temperature is lower than general refrigerant. Recently, the industry have an interest about ORC turbine development in Korea, and they presented numerous research results. In developing the turbine, several processes can be considered. However, there was few document about ORC turbine development because of the trade secret. This paper can be used as a reference in developing ORC turbine.

  • We introduce a new synthesis method to prepare small TiO2 nanoparticles with a narrow particle size distribution, which is achieved by electron beam (E-beam) irradiation. The effects of E-beam irradiation on the synthesis of TiO2 nanoparticles and the electrochemical performance of TiO2 nanoparticles as alternative anode materials for Li-ion batteries are investigated. The TiO2 nanoparticles induced by E-beam irradiation present better cycling performance and rate capability than the TiO2 nanoparticles synthesized by normal hydrolysis reaction. The better electrochemical performance is attributed to small particle size and narrow particle size distribution, resulting in the large surface area that provides innumerable reaction sites and short diffusion length for Li+ through TiO2 nanoparticles.

  • Ethylidene norbornene (ENB) and its blends with endo-dicyclopentadiene (endo-DCPD) were prepared and reacted via the ring-opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP) reaction with the $1^{st}$ and $2^{nd}$ generation Grubbs' catalysts. Dynamic exothermic behaviors during ROMP and tensile properties after ROMP were evaluated using a differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) and a universal testing machine (UTM) for the samples, respectively. It revealed that the ROMP rate was accelerated with the less contents of endo-DCPD and under the $2^{nd}$ generation catalyst. Also, the addition of endo-DCPD and the $1^{st}$ generation catalyst resulted in higher tensile modulus and strength but lower toughness. Gel fraction measurement and fracture surface observation were made to understand the tensile properties.

  • Global warming is hot issue to keep the earth everlastingly. Despite the increase of the world population and the energy demand, the world oil supply and the oil price are hold the steady state. If we are not decrease the world population and the energy consumption, unforeseeable energy crisis will come in the immediate future. AMT acronym of Advanced Materials for Transportation is a non-profitable IEA-affiliated organization to mitigate the oil consumption and the environment contamination for the transportation. In recent, Annex X Multi-materials Joining was added to enhance the car body weight reduction cause the high fuel efficiency and the low emission of exhaust gas. Multi-materials are the advanced materials application technology to optimize the weight, the performance and the cost with the combination of different materials such as Al-alloy, Mg- alloy, AHSS and CFRP. In this study, the trends of AMT strategy and Al-alloy based multi-materials joining technology were review. Also several technologies for Al-alloy dissimilar joining were investigated.

  • Porous SiC candle filter preforms were fabricated by extrusion and ramming process. To fabricate SiC candle filter preform, commercially available 85 ${\mu}m\;{\alpha}-$-SiC powder and 44 ${\mu}m$ mullite, CaC$O_3$ powder were used as the starting materials. The candle type preforms were fabricated by vacuum extrusion and ramming process, and sintered at $1400{^{\circ}C}$ 2 h in air atmosphere. The effect of forming method on porosity, density, strength (flexural and compressive strength) and microstructure was investigated. Also, corrosion test of the sintered candle filter specimens as forming method was performed at $600{^{\circ}C}$ in IGCC syngas atmosphere. The sintered SiC filter which was formed by ramming process has more higher density and exhibit higher strength than extruded filter. Its maximum density and 3-point bending strength were 2.00 g/$cm^3$ and 45 MPa, respectively.
