A series $[C_3Omim]$[X] of imidazolium cation-based ILs, with ether functional group on the alkyl side-chain have been synthesized and structure of the materials were confirmed by various techniques like $^1H$, $^{13}C$ NMR spectroscopy, MS-ESI, FTIR spectroscopy and EA. More specifically, the influence of changing the anion with same cation is carried out. The absorption capacity of $CO_2$ for ILs were evaluated at 30 and $50^{\circ}C$ at ambient pressure (0-1.6 bar). Ether functionalized ILs shows significantly high absorption capacity for $CO_2$. In general, the $CO_2$ absorption capacity of ILs increased with a rise in pressure and decreased when temperature was raised. The obtained results showed that absorption capacity reached about 0.9 mol $CO_2$ per mol of IL at $30^{\circ}C$. The most probable mechanism of interaction of $CO_2$ with ILs were investigated using FTIR spectroscopy, $^{13}C$ NMR spectroscopy and result shows that the absorption of $CO_2$ in ether functionalized ILs is a chemical process. The $CO_2$ absorption results and detailed study indicates the predominance of 1:1 mechanism, where the $CO_2$ reacts with one IL to form a carbamic acid. The $CO_2$ absorption capacity of ILs for different anions follows the trend: $BF_4$ < DCA < $PF_6$ < TfO < $Tf_2N$. Moreover, the as-synthesized ILs is selective, thermally stable, long life operational and can be recycled at a temperature of $70^{\circ}C$ or under vacuum and can be used repeatedly.
Annually, the global production of construction aggregates reaches over 40 billion tons, making aggregates the largest mining sector by volume and value. Currently, the aggregate industry is shifting from sand to hard rock as a result of legislation limiting the extraction of natural sands and gravels. A major implication of this change in the aggregate industry is the need for understanding rock fragmentation and energy absorption to produce more cost-effective aggregates. In this paper, we focused on incorporating dynamic rock and soil mechanics to understand the effects of loading rate and water saturation on the rock fragmentation and energy absorption of three different sandstones (Red, Berea and Buff) with different pore sizes. Rock core samples were prepared in accordance to the ASTM standards for compressive strength testing. Saturated and dry samples were subsequently prepared and fragmented via fast and dynamic compressive strength tests. The particle size distributions of the resulting fragments were subsequently analyzed using mechanical gradation tests. Our results indicate that the rock fragment size generally decreased with increasing loading rate and water content. In addition, the fragment sizes in the larger pore size sample (Buff sandstone) were relatively smaller those in the smaller pore size sample (Red sandstone). Notably, energy absorption decreased with increased loading rate, water content and rock pore size. These results support the conclusion that rock fragment size is positively correlated with the energy absorption of rocks. In addition, the rock fragment size increases as the energy absorption increases. Thus, our data provide insightful information for improving cost-effective aggregate production methods.

We report the catalytic effects of metal oxides on the $CO_2$ absorption rate in an aqueous potassium salt of ${\text\tiny{L}}-lysine-HCl$ using the vapor liquid equilibrium method. The best $CO_2$ absorption rate obtained through testing metal oxides in a highly concentrated potassium salt of amino acids (2.0 M) was identified using CuO. The recyclability of the metal oxides was tested over three cycles. The catalyst CuO was found to enhance the absorption rate of $CO_2$ by 61%. A possible mechanism was proposed based on NMR spectroscopy studies. Further, the effect of change in liquid absorbent viscosity on $CO_2$ absorption is discussed.
We present a simple and easy-to-implement lumped stiffness model to elucidate the load transfer mechanism among all individual tube shells and intertube van der Waals (vdW) interactions in transversely compressed multi-walled carbon nanotubes (CNTs). Our model essentially enables theoretical predictions to be made of the relevant transverse mechanical behaviors of multi-walled tubes based on the transverse stiffness properties of single-walled tubes. We demonstrate the validity and accuracy of our model and theoretical predictions through a quantitative study of the transverse deformability of double- and triple-walled CNTs by utilizing our recently reported nanomechanical measurement data. Using the lumped stiffness model, we further evaluate the contribution of each individual tube shell and intertube vdW interaction to the strain energy absorption in the whole tube. Our results show that the innermost tube shell absorbs more strain energy than any other individual tube shells and intertube vdW interactions. Nanotubes of smaller number of walls and outer diameters are found to possess higher strain energy absorption capacities on both a per-volume and a per-weight basis. The proposed model and findings on the load transfer and the energy absorption in multi-walled CNTs directly contribute to a better understanding of their structural and mechanical properties and applications, and are also useful to study the transverse mechanical properties of other one-dimensional tubular nanostructures (e.g., boron nitride nanotubes).

This study is to investigate the energy absorption characteristics of CFRP(Carbon-Fiber Reinforced Plastics) tubes on static and dynamic tests. Axial static compression tests have been carried out using the static testing machine(Shin-gang buckling testing machine) and dynamic compression tests have been utilized using an vertical crushing testing machine. When such tubes are subjected to crushing loads, the response is complex and depends on the interaction between the different mechanisms that could control the crushing process. The collapse characteristics and energy absorption have been examined for various tubes. Energy absorption of the tubes are increased as changes in the lay-up which may increase the modulus of tubes. The results have been varied significantly as a function of ply orientation and interlaminar number.

This paper investigates the energy absorption characteristics of thin-walled rectangular tubes. In the compact mode, the crushing process of a thin-walled tube is analyzed into 3 parts by the ratio of outward to inward fold length. The mean crush load and the half-wave folding length are determined by using minimum energy principle. The effective crush distance can be determined when half-wave folding length is known, and the number of folds is derived when crush distance is given. Thus when the crush distance is given, energy absorption capacity can be estimated with mean crush load and number of folds. And the theoretical value is proven experimentally.

Square tubes used for vehicle structure components have an important role on keeping its stiffness and preserving occupant safety in vehicle collision and rollover in which it experience axial collapse, bending collapse or both. Bending collapse, which absorbs kinetic energy of the impact and retains a survival space for the occupant, is a dominant failure mode in oblique collision and rollover. Thus, in this paper, the bending collapse characteristics such as the maximum bending moment and energy absorption capacity of the square tube replaced by light-weight material were evaluated and presented. The bending test of cantilever tubes which were fabricated with aluminum, GFRP and aluminum/ GFRP hybrid by co-curing process was performed. Then the maximum bending moment and the energy absorption capacity from the moment-angle curve were evaluated. Based on the test results, it was found that aluminum/ GFRP hybrid tube can show better specific energy absorption capacity compared to the pure aluminum or GFRP tube and can convert unstable collapse mode which may occur in pure GFRP tube to stable collapse mode like a aluminum tube in which plastic hinge is developed.

In this paper, the crushing tests of circular tubes under axial impact loading are conducted to investigate the energy absorption abilities. A cross head with 18kg launched by the compressed air collides against circular tubes. Circular tubes used for this experiment are Al and CFRP laminates, which have 8 ply with $15^{\circ}$ and $45^{\circ}$. The absorbed energy unit mass and volume of the CFRP specimen with $15^{\circ}$ are higher than those of aluminum specimen. CFRP specimen having small stacking angle have better energy absorption abilities than that of large stacking angle.

With increasing concern about global warming, CCS (Carbon dioxide capture and storage) has attracted much attention as a promising technology for reducing $CO_2$ emission. It is necessary to develop the cost-effective absorbents materials in order to rapid commercialize CCS technologies. In this work, he study for the promotion of absorption rate in $CO_2$ capture system using metal nanoparticle were investigated. Three kinds of metal nanoparticle, cobalt, zinc, and nickel, were prepared by wet and dry method and effect of preparation method on the absorption rate of $CO_2$ were compared. Among the tested using pH method, nickel nanoparticle prepared by wet method showed the most significant improvement of $CO_2$ absorption rate. In case that metal nanoparticle is applied to CCS process, it is expected to be more efficient in $CO_2$ capture process due to reduce the size of absorption tower.
The theoretical membrane gas absorption module treatments in a hollow fiber gas-liquid membrane contactor using Happel's free surface model were obtained under countercurrent-flow operations. The analytical solutions were obtained using the separated variable method with an orthogonal expansion technique extended in power series. The $CO_2$ concentration in the liquid absorbent, total absorption rate and absorption efficiency were calculated theoretically and experimentally with the liquid absorbent flow rate, gas feed flow rate and initial $CO_2$ concentration in the gas feed as parameters. The improvements in device performance under countercurrent-flow operations to increase the absorption efficiency in a carbon dioxide and nitrogen gas feed mixture using a pure water liquid absorbent were achieved and compared with those in the concurrent-flow operation. Both good qualitative and quantitative agreements were achieved between the experimental results and theoretical predictions for countercurrent flow in a hollow fiber gas-liquid membrane contactor with accuracy of $6.62{\times}10^{-2}{\leq}E{\leq}8.98{\times}10^{-2}$.
