Poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) particles were prepared by soap-free emulsion polymerization of MMA in the presence of a cationic initiator, 2,2'-azobis(2-methylpropionamidine) (AIBA). The Stober method has been adopted to coat silica on the surface of these cationic particles. Negatively charged silica precursors were coated onto cationic particle surfaces by electronic interaction. During the coating process, hollow particles were directly obtained by dissolution of PMMA.
The dependence of the IR optical properties of PMMA/$Al_2O_3$ nanocomposite on the alumina content was investigated in the wavelength range of $3500-2800cm^{-1}$. The samples were prepared via emulsion polymerization technique using oleic acid as a coupling agent. Grafting density calculations were carried out by means of elemental analysis CHN to yield the best coupling agent content. FTIR analysis confirmed the existence of a chemical bond between aluminum oxide and oleic acid. The outcomes of XRD analyses showed the presence of cubic gamma aluminum oxide in the nanocomposite, in contrast to the amorphous nature of PMMA. TEM images showed the core-shell morphology of the particles other than pristine PMMA. Optical constants of the nanocomposite were calculated based on FTIR spectra and the Kramers-Kronig equations. The presence of nano alumina modified some of the optical indexes in IR region.

A series of polyurethane-acrylate hybrids were synthesized by 2-step emulsion polymerization of a variety of acrylate monomers such as 2-hydroxy ethyl methacrylate (HEMA), methyl methacrylate (MMA). Experiment was performed to improve stability and emulsibility of surface treatment agent, and it was found that the polyurethane-acrylate hybrids having an optimum composition (MMA : 20%, LA(EO)3-S : 3% and TDA-7 : 5%) was shown to be quite surface active in the solid contents. These results suggests that the optimal polyurethane-acrylate hybrids in this study have high potential as top coating agent, which may have high gloss and excellent properties.

Polymer/silicate nanocomposites were prepared via two-step manufacturing process: a master batch preparation and then mixing with matrix polymer. A hybrid of PMMA and Na-MMT with exfoliated structure was first prepared by emulsion polymerization of MMA in the presence of Na-MMT. For the case that SAN24, miscible with PMMA, is used as matrix, we could prepare a nanocomposite with exfoliated structure. However, SAN31 nanocomposite shows the aggregation and/or reordering of the silicate layers due to the immiscibility between SAN31 and PMMA.
The monodispersed polystyrene spheres were prepared by emulsion polymerization in aqueous alcohol system. They coated with silver by reduction of silver ion percolated on the surface of them. The spherical hollow type silver has been prepared by dissolving polystyrene with toluene. Epoxy resin compositions with spherical hollow type silver were manufactured, which were composed of a bisphenol F type epoxy resin (RE-304S), amine type hardener (Kayahard AA), and 1-benzyl 2-methyl imidazole (1B2MI) as catalyst. The electrical conductivity with silver content ratio were investigated after cure, the percolation threshold weight ratio for conductance in this epoxy resin system was obtained above the 70 wt% of silver.
A non-fluorinated polystearyl methacrylate water repellent was synthesized by emulsion polymerization. The number and weight averaged molecular weights were obtained at around 137,277 and 237,754g/mole. The melting point was observed at $32^{\circ}C$. The contact angle of water droplet on fabrics treated with the water repellent was $140{\sim}145^{\circ}$ for cotton and polyester, and $125{\sim}130^{\circ}$ for wool and nylon. Since the critical surface tension was estimated at 20.7mN/m, even though relatively not so strong as fluorinated water repellent, it is considered to be used as a good water repellent practically.

This work offers a promising approach for development of a temperature-responsive colorimetric display platform. For this purpose, uniform thermochromic microcapsules consisting of a cholesteric liquid crystal (CLC) core and a thin polyurethane shell layer were fabricated by conducting in-situ condensation polymerization at the interface of monodisperse CLC-in-water emulsion drops. Colloidal packing-driven microcapsule registry led to exact 2-dimensional positioning of CLC microcapsules into a holes-patterned flexible film stencil. Furthermore, we showed that the designated registry of different color types of CLC microcapsules on the stencil enabled development of a microwriting display technology capable of reversible text representation according to temperature change.

We have studied the micellisation of poly(n-butyl acrylate)-block-poly(acrylic acid) and poly(n-butyl acrylate)-graft-poly(acrylic acid) in aqueous solution. The size and structure of the formed micelles was elucidated by scattering and imaging techniques. The micelle structure depends on pH, composition, and topology: graft copolymers form much smaller micelles that block copolymers of similar composition. We have also synthesized block copolymers of acrylic acid and N-isopropylacrylamide (NIPAAm) or N,N-diethylacrylamide (DEAAm). Due to the LCST of polyNIPAAm and polyDEAAm, these block copolymers spontaneously form micelles upon heating and they form inverse micelles upon decreasing pH below 4. If the LCST block is much longer than the PAA one, this presents a very convenient way to prepare crew-cut micelles. The polymers have been successfully used as stabilizers in emulsion polymerization. They also have been conjugated to streptavidin. The conjugates reversibly form mesoscopic particles on heating.

The properties of polystyrene and styrenic copolymer nanocomposites containing carbon nanotubes (CNT) and nanoclays were studied. Polystyrene and styrenic copolymer containing styrene and vinylbenzyl trimethylammonium chloride (SVTAC) were synthesized by emulsion polymerization. Polystyrene/CNT/clay and SVTAC/CNT/clay nanocomposites with various concentrations of CNT and different types of clay were prepared via mixing of polystyrene emulsion and clay. SVTAC/CNT nanocomposites showed a better electrical conductivity than PS/CNT nanocomposites. Nanocomposites with more surfactant during polymerization showed a better electrical conductivity than the ones with less surfactant. These indicated the positive effect of comonomer and surfactant on the electrical conductivity. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) was used to analyze the state of CNT dispersion. TEM results showed that CNT loading, comonomer composition and amount of surfactant affected the final dispersion of CNT in nanocomposites. In order to confirm the effects of CNT loading, comonomer composition and the amount of surfactant on the thermal and dynamic mechanical properties, DSC and DMA analyses were conducted.
Multi core-shell composite particles were prepared by the water-born emulsion polymerization of various core monomers such as methyl methacrylate (MMA), ethyl methacrylate (EMA) and shell monomers such as MMA, EMA, 2-hydroxyl ethyl methacrylate (2-HEMA), glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) and methacrylic acid (MAA) in the presence of different concentrations of sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate (SDBS). The following conclusions are drawn from the conversion, particle size and distribution, average molecular weight, molecular structure, glass transition temperature with DSC, contact angle after plasma treatment, tensile strength and isothermal decomposition kinetics. In the case of the concentration of 0.02 wt% SDBS, the conversion of MMA core-(EMA/GMA) shell composite particles was excellent as 98.5%. In the case of the concentration of 0.03 wt% SDBS, the particle size of EMA core-(MMA/GMA) shell composite particles was high as $0.48{\mu}m$. We confirmed that 3 points of glass transition temperatures appear for multi core-shell composite particles compared to 1~2 points of glass transition temperatures appear for general copolymer particles. Overall, the adhesion strength of shell composite particles was in the order of EMA/MAA > EMA/2-HEMA > EMA/GMA.
