Preparation of Cosmeceuticals Containing Flos Sophorae Immaturus Extracts: Optimization Using Box-Behnken Design Model (회화나무꽃 추출물이 함유된 Cosmeceuticals의 제조: Box-Behnken 설계모델을 이용한 최적화)

  • In this study, the stability criteria of cosmeceuticals emulsion containing Flos Sophorae Immaturus extracts was established using the Box-Behnken design model (BBD-RSM). As optimization conditions of the emulsification using the BBD-RSM, the amount of surfactant and additive, and emulsification time and speed were used as quantitative factors while mean droplet size (MDS), viscosity and emulsion stability index (ESI) were used as reaction values. According to the result of BBD-RSM, optimum conditions for the emulsification were as follows; the emulsification time and speed of 17.8 min and 5505 rpm, respectively and amounts of the emulsifier and additive of 2.28 and 1.05 wt.%, respectively. Under these conditions, the MDS, viscosity, and ESI after 7 days from the reaction were estimated as 1875.5 nm, 1789.7 cP, and 93.8%, respectively. The average error value from our actual experiments for verifying the conclusions was below 5%, which is mainly due to the fact that the BBD-RSM was applied to the optimized cosmeceuticals emulsification.

  • Microorganisms producing bioemulslfiler were isolated from the sea water In Pusan coastal area. The isolated strain which had the highest emulsification activity and stability was identified as the genus Achetobacter from the results of morphological. cultural and biochemical tests and named Achetobacter sp. EL-C6 for convenience. The compositions of optimum medium for emulsification of crude oil by Acinetobacter sp. EL-C6 were crude oil 2.0%, NH4NO3 0.2%, $K_2HPO_4$ 0.01%, $MgSO_4$.$7H_2O$ 1.o%, $CaCl_2$.$2H_2O$ 0.1% and NaCl 3.0% at initial pH 7.5 and 3$0^{\circ}C$, respectively. The cultivation for emulsification of crude ell was carried out in 500m1 shaking flask containing 100m1 of the optimum medium at 3$0^{\circ}C$. The highest emulsification was observed after 5 days. The utilization on the various hydrocarbon of the Achetobacter sp. EL-C6 showed that utilization of n-alkane compounds were better than that of aromatic compounds. Among the petroleum compounds, crude ell was best utilized by the Achetobacter sp. EL-C6.

  • The emulsion stability of W/O emulsion prepared by D phase emulsification during storage and handling is studied by using phase diagrams. The process of D phase emulsification begins with the formation of isotropic surfactant solution, followed by formation of oil-in-surfactant (O/D) gel emulsion by dispersion of octamethylcyclotetrasiloxane(OMCS) in the surfactant solution. Polyols were essential components for this purpose. To understand the function of polyols, the solution behavior of nonionic surfactant/oil/water/polyol systems were investigated by the ternary phase diagrams of polyoxyethylene oleyl ether/OMCS/propylene glycol(PG) aqueous solutions. The addition of PG increased the solubility of oil in the isotropic surfactant phase. D phase emulsification method has been applied to a new type of cosmetics. By using this emulsification technique, O/W emulsion were formed without a need for adjust of HLB. Fine and stable W/O emulsions were prepared by D phase emulsion.

Dye removal from water using emulsion liquid membrane: Effect of alkane solvents on efficiency

  • Effect of different alkane based solvents on the stability of emulsion liquid membrane was investigated using normal alkanes (n-hexane, n-heptane, n-octane and n-decane) under various operating parameters of surfactant concentration, emulsification time, internal phase concentration, volume ratio of internal phase to organic phase, volume ratio of emulsion phase to external phase and stirring speed. Results of stability revealed that emulsion liquid membrane containing n-octane as solvent and span-80 (5 % (w/w)) as emulsifying agent presented the highest amount of emulsion stability (the lowest breakage) compared with other solvents; however, operating parameters (surfactant concentration (5% (w/w)), emulsification time (6 min), internal phase concentration (0.05 M), volume ratio of internal phase to organic phase (1/1), volume ratio of emulsion phase to external phase (1/5) and stirring speed (300 rpm)) were also influential on improving the stability (about 0.2% breakage) and on achieving the most stable emulsion. The membrane with the highest stability was employed to extract acridine orange with various concentrations (10, 20 and 40 ppm) from water. The emulsion liquid membrane prepared with n-octane as the best solvent almost removed 99.5% of acridine orange from water. Also, the prepared liquid membrane eliminated completely (100%) other cationic dyes (methylene blue, methyl violet and crystal violet) from water demonstrating the efficacy of prepared emulsion liquid membrane in treatment of dye polluted waters.

  • Pseudomonas sp. lipase (lipase AK) catalyzed transesterification reaction between fructose and vinyl laurate in anhydrous pyridine. The product of this process was identified as monoester of fructose and vinyl laurate. The synthetic product has been found to be an excellent emulsifier. The synthetic bioemulsifier showed a good emulsification activity and stability in comparison with other commercial emulsifiers, and good emulsification activity on various emulsifying substrates.

  • A biosurfactant-producing strain, Bacillus subtilis TBM 3101 was isolated from the soil sample at Tae-Baek Mountain through an antifungal test and emulsification assessment. The strain was assessed, regarding to the microbial growth, by physical and chemical test, surface tension, emulsification activity and stability. The surface tension of the isolate sharply decreased to the minimum 29mN/m at 48 h growth. Of note, its emulsification was stabilized to the highest degree when tributyrin was utilized as a substrate, indicating that in comparison to a variety of synthetic surfactants, the biosurfactant produced by the isolate was significantly similar to synthetic surfactant, tween 20. In addition, the biosurfactant showed high emulsification activity when soybean oil, crude oil and tetradecane were used as a substrate. Thus, these studies could contribute to the detection and development of biosurfactant beneficial to the environment and humans.

Influence of Xanthan, Emulsification Temperature, and Environmental Stresses on the Preparation of Water-in-Corn Oil Emulsions Droplets Coated by Polyglycerol Polyricinoleate

  • The purpose of this study was to prepare stable water-in-corn oil (W/O) emulsion droplets coated by polyglycerol polyricinoleate (PGPR). W/O emulsions (20 wt% aqueous phase, 80 wt% oil phase containing 8 wt% PGPR) were produced by high pressure homogenization (Emulsions 1), however, appreciable amount of relatively large water droplets (d>$10{\mu}m$) were found. To facilitate droplet disruption, viscosity of each phase was adjusted: (i) increased the viscosity of aqueous phase by adding 0.1 wt% xanthan (Emulsions 2); (ii) decreased the viscosity of oil phase and aqueous phase by heating them separately at $50^{\circ}C$ for 1 hr immediately before emulsification (Emulsions 3). Homogenizing at the elevated temperature clearly led to a smaller water droplet size, whereas xanthan neither improved nor adversely affected on the microstructures of the emulsions. In addition, the Emulsions 3 had good stability to droplet aggregation under shearing stress, thermal processing, and long term storage.

  • Liquid crystals offer plenty of useful activities as improving the stability of emulsion, increasing moisturizing power, drug release, improving skin feeling and visual effect for cosmetics fields. In order to prepare stable semi-transparent gel emulsion, liquid crystal emulsification method was used. The emulsion stabilities of systems containing glycerin, fatty alcohols, surfactants, water and oil were investigated at various temperatures as time passed. The stabilities of all emulsions were evaluated by means of a polarizing microscope, SEM, rheometer, colorimeter and DSC. Even though the samples stored at $50^{\circ}C$ thermostatic chamber were occurred the reduction of hardness, turbidity and ${\Delta}H$ and the peak shift, the semi-transparent gel emulsion was very stable without separation between water and oils phase in emulsion.

  • Emulsions were prepared using a mixture of bio-oil obtained from the pyrolysis of sawdust in an N2 environment and Quercus mongolica in a CH4 environment for both non-catalytic and catalytic cases. Both prepared emulsions were examined by measuring the physical stability and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The emulsion with HLB 5.8 (Span 80 and Atlox 4916) for the ratio of bio-oil (B-oil and C-oil): surfactant: diesel = 10% : 3% : 87% showed stability for 15 days. Combining oils produced in N2 and CH4 environments could be a potential solution for generating high-quality emulsions with a high heating value.

Development of Environmentally Friendly Aqueous Cleanser by Emulsification of D-Limonene (D-Limonene 유화공정에 의한 환경친화성 수성세정제 개발)

  • For the purpose of development of an environmentally friendly aqueous cleanser, some experimental researches on emulsification of D-limonene were performed. OA series surfactants with different molecular weight were adapted as an emulsifier for preparation of O/W emulsion. Cleaning power of aqueous cleanser was measured by a dipping method adapting abietic acid(AA) as a solubilizate. Besides, drop size and drop size distribution, contact angle and storage stability of the aqueous cleansers were also measured and relationships among them were examined. Decrease in molecular weight of surfactant induced small drop size and contact angie, resulting in high cleaning power of aqueous cleanser. Aqueous cleanser consisted of 3wt.% OA300 and 30wt.% D-limonene showed the highest cleaning power, but displayed unfortunately with low storage stability. The storage stability of the aqueous cleanser with OA300 was significantly enhanced by addition of 0.5wt.% OA600 at the expanse of decrease in cleaning power.
