Tailored Sun Safety Messages for Outdoor Workers

  • Background: Messaging surrounding skin cancer prevention has previously focused on the general public and emphasized how or when activities should be undertaken to reduce solar ultraviolet radiation (UVR) exposure. Generic messages may not be applicable to all settings, and should be tailored to protect unique and/or highly susceptible subpopulations, such as outdoor workers. The primary objective of this study was to develop a set of tailored, practical, harm-reducing sun safety messages that will better support outdoor workers and their employers in reducing the risk of solar UVR exposure and UVR-related occupational illnesses. Methods: We adapted a core set of sun safety messages previously developed for the general population to be more applicable and actionable by outdoor workers and their employers. This study used an integrated knowledge translation approach and a modified Delphi method (which uses a survey-based consensus process) to tailor the established set of sun safety messages for use for outdoor worker populations. Results: The tailored messages were created with a consideration for what is feasible for outdoor workers, and provide users with key facts, recommendations, and tips related to preventing skin cancer, eye damage, and heat stress, specifically when working outdoors. Conclusion: The resulting tailored messages are a set of evidence-based, expert- approved, and stakeholder-workshopped messages that can be used in a variety of work settings as part of an exposure control plan for employers with outdoor workers.

A Study on the Necessity of Using Demand Guarantee following Unfair Calling Cases (부당지급청구 사례로 본 청구보증 사용의 필요성에 관한 연구)

  • It is quite true that the more Korean contractors receive overseas contracts, the more they need guarantees. The top market for them is the Middle East countries, consisting of more than the half of the total amount awarded last year and the trend is increasing as well. The problem, however, is that employers in these countries are reluctant to use international rules for guarantee such as URDG or ISP98 and easily make unfair callings. However, Korean contractors(applicants), especially small and medium sized enterprises(SMEs) tend to hurriedly enter a contract without looking into its contents as well as guarantees. They do not realize the importance of the guarantees until they receive callings from the employers(beneficiaries). Being independent from the underlying contracts, guarantee is the equivalent to cash in that it usually does not require any proof of demand when calling and the guarantor should make a payment within usually 5 business days after the request. It is often observed these days that several Korean SMEs go bankrupt due to liquidity risks after receiving unfair callings from employers in the Middle East countries. In retrospect, some cases could be obviated if contractors were a little more careful in checking the contents of a guarantee at the time of concluding a contract. For example, there is one case where the underlying contract includes a reduction clause in the Advance Payment bond and the guarantee does not have that clause. In the end, the Korean contractor had to take the whole burden of the bond amount though it had finished 81% of the project. Nobody could argue that contractors should take a full responsibility if they fail in their obligations. However, the employer's wrongful callings need to be prevented in the first place, if possible. As there shouldn't be a case where one party is at a disadvantage against the other like the case mentioned above, useful insight is being sought to minimize unfair calling risks for the benefit of the applicant. First, the applicant should carefully look into every detail of the potential guarantee before signing a contract, heeding especially that there is a reduction clause in the AP bond. Second, the governing principles for guarantee should be the ones that are internally used such as URDG758 that is objective in terms of callings given that, for example, it specifies that the requirement for a supporting statement when making a demand is a default rule. It is also recommended that the form of guarantees be the standard demand guarantee. Third, parties involved in issuing guarantees are advised to understand international rules for guarantee like URDG758 and ISP98 and to play a key role in guiding SME contractors in Korea so that they can protect themselves from possible wrongful callings, particularly from employers in the Middle East countries. I hope this study would give a wake-up call for Korean SMEs wishing to do business in the Middle East countries and remind them of the importance of guarantee itself and its governing principles.

  • An analysis of factors determining the quality of labor-management realtions shows that they include the external environment factors, the agent factors representing spirits and strategies of unions and employers, and the process factors of interaction channels in bargaining, consultation, and participation. It is found from recent research results that the spirits and strategies of unions and employers is the most important factor and that communication, consultation and sincere bargainings between them are the next most important, while environment factors are rarely important. It is suggested that mutual trust and respects, information sharing, sufficient communication and consultation, joint workplace innovation, and industry-level labor-management consultation are effective tools for good industrial relations.

Survey Research conducted a self - survey on new knowledge and attitude toward the concessionaires to sanitation target, the attitude of the sanitary administration, attitudes to hygiene education and hygiene practice Conditions received health education carried out by catering Federation regularly. Health education is a systematic settlement system for the external reality of professional education. Health and health administrators to establish an organizational structure strengthening phase. Employers and health care workers are raising awareness. Employers have a responsibility to prevent industrial accidents. Consequently, special health education targeted construction workers changed to fit the content-driven information on the species and the proper arrangement of time "based health education" currently being conducted.

Union Characteristics and its Impact on Absenteeism in the Context of Metal Industry in South Korea

  • Purpose - This study aims to examine whether key differences in characteristics of unions have significant implications for absenteeism. To uncover what characteristics of union made workers make decisions to be absent, this study used such key dimensions of unionism as democracy, cooperative strategy of a union, and d density rate. Research design and methodology - The research model of this study is that absenteeism has positive relations with union's democracy and density. But it has negative relations with union cooperative strategy. This study was conducted by survey method on 333local unionized business entities of metal industry in South Korea. Results - The result shows that significant and positive relationship between unions with high density rates, democracy and absenteeism which is in line with the argument of the previous studies. Different from the expectation, the hypotheses 2, it has been shown that there is positive relation between cooperative strategy of union and the decision of workers to be absent. Conclusions - Employers with unions with high density rates could not fully exercise disciplinary power against those workers absent at workplace since a strong union shields them effectively from punishments by employers.

The Occupational Health Problems and its Priority for Solving in the Inchon Area (인천지역의 산업보건 문제와 그 해결의 우선순위)

  • The purpose of this study was to compare the occupational health concerns and opinions among 4 groups : workers, employers and managers, government officials, and health & safety managers. It could help establishing occupational health plans efficiently and providing the way to solve health problems in workplaces in the Inchon area. The delphi technique which is used for deciding group opinion was adopted for this study. Questionnaires regarding health problems and their priorities in the workplaces were sent to four groups three times. All items were measured by five degree ordinal scales. The four groups agreed with questionnaire items, improvement of working environment, occupational health concerns of the employers, the health concerns of workers, and measurement and analysis of working environment, as the upper five priorities for solving the occupational health problems. Besides with the first five priorities, health examinations, health education, and occupational diseases were suggested as important health problems in workplace.

Analysis of Consumers' Rational Purchase Behavior by the Purchase Stage and Product (구매 단계별 그리고 제품별 소비자의 합리적 구매선택행동 분석)

  • This research aims to analyze rational decision behavior in different stages of purchasing for consumers buying household appliance goods and deals with differences in socio-demographic features and relevant variables among completely rational, intermediatedly rational, and irrational groups as well as variables differentiating those groups. First, one third of purchasers for Kimchi refrigerators was the rational consumer while a half of purchasers for side-by-side refrigerators and washing machines was. Second, there was no significant differences in satisfactions levels after purchase between rational and irrational groups among purchasers of side-by-side refrigerators but between completely and intermediately rational groups in the case of Kimchi refrigerators. Rational groups of consumers for Tromm washing machines rely on various places for purchase and also show the high level of intention for repurchase. Third, in studies of variables differentiating rationality in purchase behavioral patterns of consumers, rational choices turn out to prevail (1) among purchasers of married, college graduated, employers, and high income in the case of side-by-side refrigerators, (2) among buyers of male, old-aged, college graduated, non-employers, low, income, and hurrying to purchase in the case of Kimchi refrigerators, and (3) among buyers of old-aged, high income, not hurrying to purchase, and visiting numerous stores in the case of Tromm washing machines.

Inference about Skills and Requirements for Logisticians from Job Advertisements by Content Analysis (물류업계의 채용공고 내용분석을 통한 물류인력의 자격요건 파악에 관한 연구)

  • This paper provides a comparison and analysis of job requirements in logistics industry. Over 300 job advertisements were collected from online job sites and companies' homepage, and analysed to explore the skills that employers want from job seekers by conducting content analysis. A comprehensive requirements and skills containing 11 main categories and 36 subcategories emerged from 332 job advertisements related logistics. From the analyses we identify that top three requirements for logisticians are more or less the same for industry employers regardless of industry sector. The findings of this study are also valuable for developing a new and up-to-date logistics curriculum.

  • As women's economic participation increases, the problems of day care appears seriously in Korea. The government made of nurture law for infants in 1991 and drove more establishment day care center, However, currently only 7.3% of 1.86 million infants, of working mother's infants under age 5, are caring. The employers supporting day are facilities which have many advantages such as enable women's economic participation stability of mental state, but the number of such facilities was recorded as 114 in 1996. therefore, the support for the facilities are demanding in terms of quantity but it is required improvements of in terms of quantity because infants are easily influenced by their environment. This study aims to provide infants of employers more efficient and better interior environment for day care and education facilities. By analyzing actual condition of plans and space utilization of selected facilities were cases and found out the problems in the selected facilities. The study of study identified are explained. 1. The object of study identified are explained. 2. Relevant theories and studies on environmental structure of infant day care. 3. The present conditions of infant day care are investigated and analysed with selected facilities as cases. 4. The concept and basic direction of design was made based on above researches.

Workers' Compensation Insurance and Occupational Injuries

  • Objectives: Although compensation for occupational injuries and diseases is guaranteed in almost all nations, countries vary greatly with respect to how they organize workers' compensation systems. In this paper, we focus on three aspects of workers' compensation insurance in Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) countries - types of systems, employers' funding mechanisms, and coverage for injured workers - and their impacts on the actual frequencies of occupational injuries and diseases. Methods: We estimated a panel data fixed effect model with cross-country OECD and International Labor Organization data. We controlled for country fixed effects, relevant aggregate variables, and dummy variables representing the occupational accidents data source. Results: First, the use of a private insurance system is found to lower the occupational accidents. Second, the use of risk-based pricing for the payment of employer raises the occupational injuries and diseases. Finally, the wider the coverage of injured workers is, the less frequent the workplace accidents are. Conclusion: Private insurance system, fixed flat rate employers' funding mechanism, and higher coverage of compensation scheme are significantly and positively correlated with lower level of occupational accidents compared with the public insurance system, risk-based funding system, and lower coverage of compensation scheme.
