Urinary Mercury Levels Among Workers in E-waste Shops in Nakhon Si Thammarat Province, Thailand

  • Objectives: To determine urinary mercury levels in e-waste workers in Southern Thailand and the airborne mercury levels in the e-waste shops where they worked, to describe the associations between urinary and airborne mercury levels, and to evaluate the prevalence of mercury exposure-related health effects among e-waste workers. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted by interviewing 79 workers in 25 e-waste shops who lived in Nakhon Si Thammarat Province, Thailand. Information on general and occupational characteristics, personal protective equipment use, and personal hygiene was collected by questionnaire. Urine samples were collected to determine mercury levels using a cold-vapor atomic absorption spectrometer mercury analyzer. Results: The e-waste workers' urinary mercury levels were $11.60{\mu}5.23{\mu}g/g$ creatinine (range, 2.00 to $26.00{\mu}g/g$ creatinine) and the mean airborne mercury levels were $17.00{\mu}0.50{\mu}g/m^3$ (range, 3.00 to $29.00{\mu}g/m^3$). The urinary and airborne mercury levels were significantly correlated (r=0.552, p<0.001). The prevalence of self-reported symptoms was 46.8% for insomnia, 36.7% for muscle atrophy, 24.1% for weakness, and 20.3% for headaches. Conclusions: Personal hygiene was found to be an important protective factor, and should therefore be stressed in educational programs. Employers should implement engineering measures to reduce urinary mercury levels and the prevalence of associated health symptoms among e-waste workers.

유해환경 근무 경험이 우울에 미치는 영향 - 음주의 매개효과와 주관적 건강의 조절효과를 중심으로 - (The Effect of Exposure to Hazardous Workplace Environment on Depression - Focusing on Mediating Effects of Drinking and Moderating Effects of Subjective Health Status-)

  • Objectives: The working environment affects employees' physical and mental aspects, and has a deep associations with depression. The purposes of this study are to investigate how hazardous environment working experience impacts on depression, to provide rationale and practical implications for reducing depression and drinking. Methods: This study targeted 215 dental hygiene students from 3 universities located in Gyeonggi-do from November 30 to December 4, 2015. We analyzed the data with frequency analysis, descriptive statistics, t-test. One-way ANOVA, Pearson correlation coefficient, Regression analysis by using SPSS. Results: This study showed that experience working in hazardous environments increased depression and alcohol drinking, on the other hand alcohol drinking reduced depression. In addition, experience working in hazardous environments effected on depression indirectly through mediating of drinking, subjective health had not role of Moderating Effects between experience working in hazardous environments and depression. Conclusions: In order to reduce workers' depression and alcohol, the improvements of harmful environment are needed. For this governments and local governments should efforts to support enhancing workplace environment, to develop model of standard work environment, and to change employers' awareness on the harmful environment.

저진동 공구 개발 가이드라인 구축을 위한 실험적 연구 (An Experimental Research for the Development of the Guideline of Low Vibration Hand Tools)

  • The reduction of tool vibration has been a serious issue for both employers and workers because of the risks of vibration transmitted to the workers. In this study a hand-arm vibration measurement and evaluation system was developed based on ISO 5349:2001 and used for analyzing relation of vibration level and components of tools. This system consists of a notebook PC installed a LabVIEW program and the data acquisition system including two 3-axial accelerometers and a NI-DAQ card. Vibration measurement tests were conducted for eight angle grinders and four impact wrenches where 3 subjects were used for each of the tools. The relation between different components of each tool and its vibration total value made it possible to set-up a guideline of tool design. In the past engineers developed tools by using their experience and intuition, but by using this system it became possible to design tool components so as to minimize the risks of hand-transmitted vibration.

베이비붐세대 남성의 근무환경이 심리적 안녕감에 미치는 영향 (Impact of Working environment on Psychological Well-being in Male Baby boomers)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study is to measure psychological well-being and to examine the associated factors in male baby boomers using Korean Working Conditions Survey Data 2011. Methods: This study was based on the 3rd Korean Working Conditions Survey Data 2011, which was conducted from June to November 2011 by the Occupational Safety and Health Research Institute. The total number of subjects was 3,340 male employees, who were born from 1955 to 1963 and responded to the question regarding occupational stress. Chi-square and multiple logistic regression were used for data analysis using the SAS ver 9.3 program. Results: Approximately 54.5% of the male babyboomer employees did not have psychological well-being. Factors associated with psychological well-being were weekend-shift and occupational stress including job insecurity, organizational system, and lack of reward. Night-shift and long working hours influenced psychological well-being, but the difference was not statistically significant. Conclusion: This study is a meaningful attempt to measure psychological well-being and perform an analysis of associated factors in male baby boomer employees using nationwide survey data. We suggest a complex institutional supplement in terms of national and employers to increase the psychological well-being of baby boomers.

맞벌이 부모의 직장보육에 대한 긍정적.부정적 태도와 복지향상 기대 (Attitudes and Expectations of Well-being Improvement toward the Employer-supported Day Care Service of Dual-earner Parents)

  • This study examined the relations between dual-earner parents' attitudes toward the employer-supported day care service and their expectations of well-being improvement. The data of this study were collected from 271 dual-earner couples. The main results of this study were as follows: 1) Dual-earner parents showed more positive attitudes toward the employer-supported day care service. 2) Significant difference by sex was observed in dual-earner parents' attitudes toward the service: Mothers displayed more positive attitudes than fathers. Also, either being positive or negative in the attitude differed according to the respondents' income and job. 3) Parents' attitude toward the day care service was significantly correlated with expectations of well-being improvement. The more positive attitudes they showed about the service, the more expectations of well-being improvement they reported, and vice versa. 4) Positive (employers, parents, children) and negative (parents) attitudes were significant variables predicting parents' expectations of well-being improvement.

직장보육 관련법의 변화과정 및 직장보육서비스의 개선방안 (A Study on the Process to Amend Laws Concerning Employer-Supported Child Care and the Improvement of Its Service)

  • This study analyzes the amendment history of Educare Law of Infants and Children, the Equal Employment Opportunity Law, and Employment Insurance Law, and also examines the present status of the employer-supported child care service through secondary analysis of other policy studies. The three laws concerning employer-supported child care can be said to hold in itself two main concepts: employers' obligations to provide child care, and government's financial support and administrative management. In terms of the first concept, laws have been amended to enlarge the number of enterprises legally-responsible for child care service and to relieve the financial burden from them. In terms of the second, laws have been amended to gradually extend the magnitude of government's financial support and to establish the systematic administrative management. Approximately a half of the policy target enterprises, however, is not complying the laws. In addition, employer-supported child care centers are only occupying less than 1% of the whole child care market. Thus, this study evaluates the current employer-supported child care service system and suggests several principles for its improvement.

  • 공학교육인증시스템에서 프로그램 교육목표란 졸업생이 졸업 후 3~4년 후에 달성하어야 할 목표로 정의를 하고 있다. 본 논문에서는 한국기술교육대학교 정보통신정공에서 설정하고 있는 교육목표가 산업 현장에서 얼마나 중요하며 어느 정도 달성되었는지를 평가하기위한 평가도구로 간접평가 방법에 의한 설문문항을 개발하고 제시한다. 제안된 설문문항을 사용하여 졸업생 및 산업체 고용주들을 대상으로 설문조사를 통하여 교육목표 중요도 및 달성도를 평가하여 보았다. 조사결과 글로벌역량과 관련된 부분이 부족한 것으로 나타나고 있으며 이를 개선하기 위한 다양한 교육과정 개선이 필요하다고 판단된다.

ALA 인증 MLIS에 대한 분석 (A Study on the Accreditation of LIS Master's Programs in ALA)

  • 본 논문은 ALA 인증 문헌정보학교를 분석하는 것이 연구의 목적이다. 현재 ALA 인증위원회로부터 인증받은 석사과정 문헌정보학교는 57개교이다. 57개교가 기본 데이터이며, 이 정보원을 이용하여 다각적으로 분석하였다. 즉, 개교 연대, 개교시 학문명칭, 어떤 시기에 학과가 가장 많이 개설되었는지, 학문의 개정명칭, 어떤 학위과정의 프로그램 등이 개설되었는지를 분석하고자 하였다. 여기에서 얻은 결과를 한국의 문헌정보학의 교육의 향상성과 그 방향을 결정하는데 타산지석으로 삼고자 하였다.

건설업 안전·보건관리자 선임기준 개선 방안에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Criteria for Appointment of Safety and Health Managers in the Construction Industry)

  • The construction accidents which had been on the downward trend for the past decades have increased for five consecutive years since 2008. In order to let the increasing trend of construction accident slow growing or switching to decline, various efforts are required of all members in construction industry such as government, employers, construction engineers, safety managers, construction workers, etc. Although the criteria for appointment of safety managers in construction site introduced in 1982 have contributed to prevent construction accident as a forefront for the past 30 years, it has not been a remarkable improvement in the safety manager's status and roles which have been required to change according to the changes of circumstances and environments. In associated with a newly introduced the criteria for appointment of health managers in construction site in the year 2015, the problems such as role, status, number of safety and health managers are needed to be considered comprehensively and improved widely. In this study, we propose several improvement plans which will improve the current criteria for appointment of safety and health managers in construction sites.

The Determinant Factors of Development Batik Cluster Business: Lesson From Pekalongan, Indonesia

  • The study examines how business conditions, demand conditions and the role of government can influence the development of batik clusters in Pekalongan. This research is expected to be able to provide recommendations for both employers and local governments in order to help in optimizing the development of batik clusters. The research applied a quantitative research by engaging multiple regression analysis as an effort to understand the effect of the relationship between independent and dependent variables. In addition, this research was conducted in three largest batik clusters in Pekalongan, Indonesia namely batik cluster of Pasindon, Kauman, and Jenggot. These results indicate that business conditions positively affect the batik clusters development. It implies that the greater both business conditions in a cluster will lead the better the development. Indeed, the demand conditions also have an impact on the cluster development. This finding remarked that demand conditions are variable that need to be considered to development of batik cluster. Lastly, Government's role is confirmed that positively related to the Development of Batik Clusters. It implies that the more active the government's role in a cluster will have a good impact on the development of the cluster in certain area.
