Emotional Intelligence in Children's Textbooks of the Chosun Dynasty (조선시대 아동용 교재들 속에 나타난 정서지능)

  • Seven textbooks for children used in homes and schools (sudangs) of the Chosun dynasty were examined to investigate how they taught emotional intelligence in traditional Korean society. The contents of the books were analyzed according to the 4 abilities of emotional intelligence described by Salovey and Mayer (1966): (1) perception, appraisal, and expression of emotion, (2) emotion's facilitation of thinking, (3) understanding and analyzing emotions, and (4) regulation of emotion to promote emotional and intellectual growth. The analysis showed that most of the books valued emotional intelligence and taught children how they perceive, appraise, and express emotions. The emotional ability to facilitate thinking was also emphasized, whereas the ability to understand and analyze emotions was seldom mentioned. It was also found that the regulation of emotion was emphasized; that is, children were educated to control and depress their emotions rather than to express them naturally.

A Study on Correlation between Residential Environment Stress, Residence Coping Style, and Emotional Intelligence (주거환경 스트레스와 주거대처방식 및 감성지능의 상관성 연구)

  • The purpose of this study is to consider the importance of residential environment by grasping factors for residential environment, and also grasping the relationship between residential environment stress, residence coping style, and emotional intelligence. Self-report survey and emotional intelligence measuring tool developed by Wong & Law (2000) were conducted in this study to investigate the contents of residential environment stress, residence coping style, and emotional intelligence, and subjects of this study were students of D university. As a result of this study, residential environment stress that respondents recognized was not high, but stress in super ordinate stage of residential desire was higher than that in subordinate stage. Also as the result of conducting correlation analysis of the relationship between residential environment stress, residence coping style, and emotional intelligence, there was insignificant correlation. It is supposed that the result is caused by limited respondents in this study, and it is considered that more reliable analysis with expansive inspection will be required in the future study.

A Case Study on Emotional Labor and Exhaustion from Work of Taekwondo Gym Instructors (태권도장지도자의 감정노동과 직무소진에 관한 사례연구)

  • This research used one of the qualitative research techniques, in-depth interview method, on Taekwondo Gym instructors in their 30s to 50s with over 10 years experiences in various age groups, to elicit the empirical cases of emotional labor and exhaustion from their work. It categorized the cases into 3 main subjects that identified 2 areas to emphasized in each subjects through the phenomenological classification method. First subject listed, "recognition of emotional labor of the instructors", highlighted "recognition as a manager" and "recognition as an educator". Second subject listed. "meaning and need of emotional labor at the Taekwondo Gym", highlighted "emotional labor as a business strategy" and "emotional labor for educational effects". Third subject listed, "exhaustion from work experienced by the instructors", highlighted "a sense of shame experienced in the field" and "directions for change".

Influence of Emotion Labor on Job Stress and Burnout for the Hotel Employee (호텔기업 종사원의 감정노동이 직무스트레스와 소진에 미치는 영향)

  • Though the concept emotional labor in hotel employees is very important in the theoretical and practical perspective, the extant study has not yet studied. Based on the existing literature on the effects of emotional labor, including job stress and burnout, the hypotheses were suggested and date analyses were performed to verify these hypotheses. Data gathering were performed by self-administered questionaries on the samples of 330 hotel employees in Seoul. Finding were as Following. Firstly, attentiveness to required display rules, variety of emotional display rule, emotional dissonance was positively relatively to job stress. Secondly, variety of emotional display rule, emotional dissonance was positively relatively to burnout. Thirdly, job stress was positively relatively to burnout. The result of this study will be helpful for the hotel industry which gave needs to establish the marketing strategies.

Types of Contemporary Emotional Designs : A Focus on the Correlation with Social Paradigms (현대 감성디자인의 표현유형 분석 : 사회적 패러다임과의 연관성 분석을 중심으로)

  • Contemporary era has witnessed a diversity of emotion and emotions being expressed through consumption. This paper examines the relationship between social paradigms and emotional design by means of literature study. In sections 2 and 3, I examine the prevalent social paradigms and the concept/development of emotional design. In section 4, I show the correspondence between social paradigms and specific types of emotional design. More specifically it is shown that "pluralism and decentrality" has led to fun design, individual design and participative design; "emotional revolution" has given rise to multi-sensory design, design with positive feelings, design with negative feelings and aesthetic design; "non-materialistic values" have their correspondence in design as performance and story-telling in design; and "organic worldview" finds its expression in ecological design with a wellness emphasis, and in interactive emotional design.

Effects on Job Satisfactions by an emotional Intelligence and Conflict-relations of Social Workers in a Long-term care Facilities : focused on the moderating effects of communications (노인요양시설 종사자의 감성지능과 갈등관계가 직무만족에 미치는 영향 : 소통의 조절효과 연구)

  • The purpose of this study is to demonstrate moderating effect of communications on job satisfactions by an emotional intelligence and conflict-relations of employees and to investigate the influence on job satisfactions by an emotional intelligence and conflict-relations of employees in a long-term care facilities. The results were analyzed from the final responses of 379 employees who are working in a long-term care facilities in Gyeong-Gi Province by SPSS 18.0. The method used in this study were factor analysis, t-test, ANOVA, hierarchical regression analysis, moderated regression analysis. The results of this study are as in the following. First, these consequences showed that an emotional intelligence is positively related with job satisfaction among others' emotional appraisal, use of emotion, regulation of emotion and self emotional appraisal. Second, these results are observed that the conflicts of client's protector and superior is negatively related with job satisfaction. Third, these data are convinced that the communications have a partial effects among conflict, relationship and compensation.

The Influences between New Nurses' Nursing Performance, Emotional Intelligence, Self-resiliency and Core Self-evaluation (신입간호사의 정서지능, 자아탄력성, 핵심자기평가가 간호업무수행에 미치는 영향)

  • This study is a descriptive research of investigating the correlation between new nurses' nursing performance, emotional intelligence, self-resiliency and core self-evaluation. The subjects were 114 new nurses working for less than 12 months at two different hospitals with over 800 beds located in Gyeonggi-do. Between July and November, this study collected the data measured by using a structured questionnaire survey for nursing performance, emotional intelligence, self-resiliency and core self-evaluation. As a result, it was found that there was a difference in the degree of nursing performance according to new nurses' education level, job satisfaction, and working position task satisfaction, and that the higher the emotional intelligence, self-resiliency and core self-evaluation were, the better the nursing performance was. As for emotional intelligence, education level, core self-evaluation and job satisfaction, it was found that they were variables to well predict the degree of nursing performance, and explained 33% of variance in nursing performance. Accordingly, it is necessary to provide actual field-adaptive training education including emotional intelligence and core self-evaluation other than nursing performance from new nurses' orientation in consideration of education degree and job satisfaction.

The Congruent Effects of Gesture and Facial Expression of Virtual Character on Emotional Perception: What Facial Expression is Significant? (가상 캐릭터의 몸짓과 얼굴표정의 일치가 감성지각에 미치는 영향: 어떤 얼굴표정이 중요한가?)

  • In the design and develop a virtual character, it is important to correctly deliver target emotions generated by the combination of facial expression and gesture. The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of congruent/incongruent between gesture and facial expression on target emotion. In this study four emotions, joy, sadness, fear, and anger, are applied. The results of study showed that sadness emotion were incorrectly perceived. Moreover, it was perceived as anger instead of sadness. Sadness can be easily confused when facial expression and gestures were simultaneously presented. However, in the other emotional status, the intended emotional expressions were correctly perceived. The overall evaluation of virtual character's emotional expression was significantly low when joy gesture was combined with sad facial expression. The results of this study suggested that emotional gesture is more influential correctly to deliver target emotions to users. This study suggested that social cues like gender or age of virtual character should be further studied.

Factors Affecting Nursing Productivity of Clinical Nurses: Focused on Emotional Intelligence and Burnout (임상간호사의 간호생산성 영향요인: 감성지능과 소진을 중심으로)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between emotional intelligence, burnout and nursing productivity, to find the factors for nursing productivity need to the efficient management of nursing organization. 255 nurses were collected a structured questionnaire by convenience sampling with 300 beds, Nov. 12-Dec. 26 in 2013. Data were processed SPSS 17.0, using t-test, one way ANOVA, Scheffe test, Pearson's correlation coefficient, and enter multiple regression analysis. These results showed a significant negative correlation between emotional intelligence and burnout, a significant positive correlation between emotional intelligence. Emotional intelligence, total clinical experence, burnout and position had a significant influence on nursing productivity, Nursing productivity explained 43.4% of the variation. Therefore, it demanded that to build the infrastructure for the nursing organization of carrer management, to improve emotional intelligence, to design diverse intervention program for the nurses, to reduce burnout, and to increase work productivity.

Effects of Emotional Leadership on Turnover Intention of the Employees in Human Service Organizations: Mediating Effect of Job Satisfaction and Multi-group Analysis according to Employment Type of Chief Executives (휴먼서비스조직의 감성리더십이 종사자의 이직의도에 미치는 영향 : 직무만족의 매개효과와 최고관리자의 근무형태별 다집단분석)

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the mediating effects of job satisfaction of human service employees on emotional leadership-turnover intention relationship. Additionally, this study examines chief executive's employment type differences on results of the structural relationship. To examine them, employees from 56 local healthy family support centers in Seoul and Gyeonggi-do were surveyed and 295 of them were finally analyzed. The methodology adopted in this study is the structural equation modeling and multi-group analysis. The results of this study are as follows. Firstly, emotional leadership of supervisor has a significant influence on the job satisfaction. Secondly, it was found that emotional leadership and job satisfaction have a significantly negative effect on turnover intention. Thirdly, job satisfaction works as a mediator between the emotional leadership and turnover intention. Finally, it was confirmed that emotional leadership is a signifiant factor for job satisfaction, and that the paths vary with job satisfaction according to employment type of chief executives. Based on the above findings, theoretical and practical implications are discussed.
