  • The scientific verification of the physiological and psychological effects that result from interaction with green plants would not only provide objective knowledge on the psychological effect of green but would also establish useful grounds for the creation of green spaces that consider human emotions. The present study measured the cerebral activity(cerebral blood flow) and the autonomic nervous system activity (blood pressure, pulse rate, amylase) of fifteen Korean male subjects as they inhaled the natural scent diffused by pine needles. Impression and mood state evaluations of the reactions to the pine scent were carried out using the SD method and POMS. Cerebral activity was observed to be significantly activated in the feeling, judgment, and motor areas of the frontal lobe, as well as the memory area in the temporal lobe. Verbal evaluations by the SD method and POMS indicated a pine scent left natural but stimulated and active impressions, provided vigor, and also reduced confusion. The autonomic nervous system activities, however, showed no significant differences. These findings verified scientifically that a pine scent vitalizes humans both physiologically and psychologically. These results could be useful as fundamental data for the design of green spaces that consider human emotional aspects.

  • Since stress can cause a variety of diseases, the relaxation of stress is an important factor for preventing diseases. One way to relieve stress is to use auditory or visual materials. If auditory and visual ones are used together, the effect of stress relaxation will be maximized. In this context, we analyze mood distribution of genre of music and color distribution of mood from the mood data for musics and color data for mood words collected directly from volunteers. Based on these two distributions, we also perform the $X^2$-test with Minitab for checking that color distributions are different from genre to genre. The results show that a different genre has a different color distribution and that the distributions of color, brightness and saturation depend on mood (P<0.0001). The results will be used to develop an emotional lighting system which plays lighting according to music mood, which can be applied to psychotherapy but more data and analysis are needed for clinical trials.

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the impacts of newspaper contents producers' role stress and burnout on their job satisfaction. For this, a survey was performed, of which the subjects were selected out of a great number of journalists employed in several newspapers. Finally, a total of 229 completed questionnaires were used for statistical inspections, such as correlation analysis and multivariate regression analysis. The results of this study can be summarized as follows: First, it is demonstrated that, the more stress journalists have with respect to role ambiguity, repetitive duties, and role conflict, which are three of the four factors causing role stress, they are less likely to have job satisfaction. However, role overload, the remaining factor of role stress, is shown to have nothing to do with job satisfaction despite it actually causes job stress most. Also, it is ascertained that role ambiguity among the aforementioned four factors of job stress has the most positive effect on job satisfaction in comparison. Second, burnout is shown to have negative correlation with job satisfaction. That is, it is identified that, the more burnout such as emotional exhaustions, depersonalization, and depreciation of personal accomplishment journalists perceive, they are less likely to have job satisfaction. In addition, it is become clear that depreciation of personal accomplishment, among the factors of burnout, has the strongest impact on job satisfaction.

  • This study analyzed the differences in parents' perceptions toward children's adjustments after grade skipping and early graduation. Parents of an early entrancer to K university(n=43) and parents of a non-early entrancer to K university(n=12) responded two kinds of questionnaires, one is for parents' perceptions towards children's needs for grade skipping and early graduation, and the other is for parents' perceptions toward children's adjustments to university experiences. Parents' responses were analyzed by MANOVA and MANCOVA. Results indicated that there was the significant difference in parents' perceptions for 'information about early graduation.' That is, parents of an early-entrancer had more 'information about early graduation' than their counterparts. However, there was no significant difference in parents' perceptions, after the effect of 'information about early graduation' on parents' perceptions toward children' academical and social-emotional adjustments. Thus, parents having more 'information about early graduation' considered more seriously the needs of grade skipping and early graduation in their children and worried less about their children's adjustments to university experiences.

  • This study is a descriptive research to grasp the effects of nursing performance on emotional labor, job stress and resilience in general hospital nurses. Method: I surveyed them using a structured questionnaire for collecting data from Aug. 20, 2019 to Sep. 2, 2019. The collected data were analyzed by the frequency, the percentage, t-test, ANOVA, Scheffe's Test, Pearson's Correlation Coefficient, and Multiple Regression Analysis. Results: The factors affecting nursing performance of the subjects were resilience (β=0.58, p<.001), and current position is head nurse (β=0.21, p<.01), the number of working years at current working place (β=0.18, p<.05). The F statistics for the fit of the estimated regression model was very significant as 30.901(p<.001) and the explanatory power was 42.4%. Conclusion: The results of this study showed that resilience was the most influential factor to nursing performance of general hospital nurses, and the number of working years at current working place was the most influential factor to the performance of head nurses. Therefore, it is necessary to develop practical programs strengthening resilience of nurses for the improvement of nursing performance and to apply strategies on development.

Contact Frequency and Psychological Distance between Leaders: Job Distress and Mediation through Employees' Perceived Self-Leadership (리더와의 접촉빈도와 심리적 거리가 직무 디스트레스에 미치는 영향: 구성원이 인지하는 셀프리더십의 매개효과)

  • Purpose - This study aims to investigate a solution to reduce the negative reactions arising from the performance of duties or the job distress of workers in the service industry, because human resource statistics regarding workers in the service sector have been unreported, while concerns regarding exposure to emotional exertion and poor working conditions have been continuously increasing. Research design, data, and methodology - This study specifically focused on workers in highway service areas. It differs from previous studies because it involves the perspective of the person-organization fit and regards workers' cognition of leaders through the psychological distance toward the leader and the contact frequency between workers and leaders within the framework of the leader-individual fit. Moreover, this study highlights the role of the self-leadership of workers as an important factor that becomes manifested in the individual-level fit to the organization. Hence, this study investigates whether the positive role of the above factors, in turn, could reduce job distress. Workers from highway service areas in Gyeonggi-do province provided data; 141 valid questionnaires are collected. SPSS 19.0 and AMOS 19.0 were used to test the reliability and validity of constructs. Simple regression, multiple regression, and 3 step mediation tests were used to test the hypotheses after the correlation tests. Results - Results indicated that leader-member contact frequency and psychological distance have negative effects on job distress but positive effects on self-leadership. A mediation test revealed that self-leadership, in the relationships between contact frequency and job distress and between psychological distance and job distress, resulted in partial mediation and full mediation, respectively. Conclusions - The result can be understood through two different possible explanations. First, service area workers generally possess a positive perspective toward their leaders. This can be interpreted to mean that increased contact frequency and psychological distance would be considered as supports from the leader, rather than intrusive controls or management schemes. Therefore, the management in highway service areas should invest efforts in increasing contact frequency as well as maximizing psychological similarities by adopting the viewpoints of workers in terms of moral and ethical management, to reduce the workers' job distress. The results relating to self-leadership also indicate that increased contact frequency must be accompanied by intentions for the effective promotion of workers' self-leadership. It also signifies the necessity of a strategic approach by leaders to induce workers to perceive "in-group"ness as suggested both by the similarity-attraction theory and by the social identity theory. In addition, the results of the mediation test of self-leadership indicate that because workers' self-leadership activates upon increased contact frequency by the leader, it should not be a means of control and should not be utilized only from the perspective of management. It is also suggested that strategies such as transfer of authority could have a positive effect in promoting the expansion of self-influence from workers.
