IMPROVING EMISSIVITY ESTIMATION IN RETRIEVING LAND SURFACE TEMPERATURE WITH MODIS DATA

  • Many researches conducted to investigate the relationship between surface emissivity and surface temperature in the past two decades and pointed out that the emissivity play a key role in applying remote sensing data to retrieve surface temperature. The task of surface temperature estimation is so important in many research fields, such as earth energy budgets, evapotranspiration, drought, global change and heat island effect. Therefore, it is indispensable to develop an effective and accurate technique to estimate the emissivity for accurate surface temperature estimations. This study developed an improved emissivity estimation technique for the use of surface temperature retrievals with MODIS data. The result of applying this improved technique using Band 31 of MODIS shows that the accuracy of estimated surface temperatures will be improved. This study also uses MODIS data observed in 2005 to establish the relationship between the surface emissivity correction factor and NDVI. Through the use of these correction factors, the land surface temperature can be retrieved more accurate with MODIS data.

레이더 흡수특성이 있는 저적외선 방출 복합섬유의 제조 및 특성 연구 (Preparation and Characterization of Low Infrared Emissivity Bicomponent Fibers with Radar Absorbing Property)

  • Heavy weight of the camouflage materials was always the main problem. To solve it, the low infrared emissivity fibers with the radar absorbing property (LIFR) were prepared. The low infrared emissivity fibers (LIF) were firstly melt-spun by co-extrusion of polypropylene (PP) and PP/various fillers master-batches using general conjugate spinning. The infrared emissivity of LW with AA and ZnO was decreased respectively compared with that of pure polypropylene fibers. The infrared emissivity of LIF with 15 wt% Al and 2 wt% ZnO in the sheath-part can reach 0.58. To improve LIF radar absorbing property, LIFR was prepared by filling the 50 wt% ferrite and bronze in the core-part of LIF. The radar absorbing efficacy of LIFR was good and the infrared emissivity was low. For the characterization, fiber electron intensity instrument and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) were used for the analysis of mechanical properties, thermal and crystallization behavior of the spun-fibers. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was carried out to observe the particle distribution of the bicomponent fibers.

  • It is studied that the measuring method of the spectral emissivity by using hemispherical mirror with an inclined observation hole. The in-service calibration method of mirror reflectivity is also dealed with. It is possible to apply this method on measuring emissivity of conductor or non-conductor.

원자로급 흑연 IG-11의 산화율에 따른 기공도와 열방사율과의 관계 (Correlation Between the Porosity and the Thermal Emissivity as a Function of Oxidation Degrees on Nuclear Graphite IG-11)

  • Graphite for the nuclear reactor is used to the moderator, reflector and supporter in which fuel rod inside of nuclear reactor. Recently, there are many researches has been performed on the various characteristics of nuclear graphite, however most of them are restricted to the structural and the mechanical properties. Therefore we focused on the thermal property of nuclear graphite. This study investigated the thermal emissivity following the oxidation degree of nuclear graphite with IG-11 used as a sample. IG-11 was oxidized to 6% and 11% in air at 5 l/min at $600^{\circ}C$. The porosity and thermal emissivity of the sample were measured using a mercury porosimeter and by an IR method, respectively. The thermal emissivity of an oxidized sample was measured at $100^{\circ}C$, $200^{\circ}C$, $300^{\circ}C$, $400^{\circ}C$ and $500^{\circ}C$. The porosity of the oxidized samples was found to increase as the oxidation degree increased. The thermal emissivity increased as the oxidation degree increased, and the thermal emissivity decreased as the measured temperature increased. It was confirmed that the thermal emissivity of oxidized IG-11 is correlated with the porosity of the sample.

  • 기존의 MEMS 기반 루버 및 셔터 개폐형 가변 방사율 라디에이터는 온도 조건에 따라 방사율이 가변되어 효율적인 열 제어가 가능하나 발사 환경에서의 기계적 구동부의 취약점과 변경된 방사율 유지를 위해 지속적인 전력 소모가 요구되는 단점을 갖는다. 본 연구에서 제안한 MEMS 기반 가변 방사율 라디에이터는 대전되는 비드를 사용하여 전극의 극성 변화에 따라 방사율 가변이 가능하기 때문에 상기의 문제점을 극복할 수 있다. 본 연구에서는 MEMS 기반 가변 방사율 라디에이터의 광학 물성치 최적화 설계를 수행하였으며, 고정 방사율 라디에이터와의 비교를 통해 MEMS 기반 가변 방사율 라디에이터의 유효성을 입증하였다.

양극산화된 알루미늄의 적외선 복사특성 연구 (A Study on the Infrared Radiation Properties of Anodized Aluminum)

  • Spectral emissivity depends on the surface conditions of the materials. The mechanisms that affect the spectral emissivity in anodic oxide films on aluminum were investigated. The aluminum specimens were anodized in a sulfuric acid solution and the thickness of the resulting oxide film formed changed with the anodizing time. FT-IR spectrum analysis identified the anodic oxide film as boehmite ($Al_2$$O_3$.$H_2$O). Both the infrared emisivity and reflectivity of the anodized aluminum were affected by the structure of the anodic oxide film because Al-OH and Al-O-Al have a pronounced absorption band in the infrared region of the spectrum. The presence of an anodic oxide film on aluminum caused a rapid drop in the infrared reflectivity. An aluminum surface in the clean state had an emissivity of approximately 0.2. However, the infrared emissivity rapidly increased to 0.91 as the thickness of the anodic oxide film increased.

Study on Thin Sea Ice Thickness using Passive Microwave Brightness Temperature

  • The use of passive microwave data for estimating sea-ice thickness is limited by strong dependence of emissivity on near-surface brine. However, this particular characteristic becomes a basis for an algorithm to estimate thickness of thin sea-ice if a thickness-salinity-emissivity relationship is established. This study aims at developing an algorithm to estimate sea ice thickness on the basis of this relationship. In order to establish a thickness-salinity-emissivity relationship, we have conducted multi-platform synchronous observations in the Sea of Okhotsk. We note a positive relationship between thickness and brightness temperature. From observations, we also establish an empirical relationship between salinity and emissivity, thus between thickness and brightness temperature. The derived relationship is qualitatively similar to the one based on Hoekstra and Cappillino's formulation. Our results suggest that for thin sea-ice in the winter period there is potential to develop an algorithm to estimate sea-ice thickness.

  • Thermal emissivity of nuclear graphite was measured with its oxidation degree. Commercial nuclear graphites (IG-110, PECA, IG-430, and NBG-18) have been used as samples. Concave on graphites surface increased as its oxidation degree increased, and R value (Id/Ig) of the graphites decreased as the oxidation degree increased. The thermal emissivity increased depending on the decrease of the R (Id/Ig) value through Raman spectroscopy analysis. It was determined that the thermal emissivity was influenced by the crystallinity of the nuclear graphite.

  • Heat trnasfer for absorbing and emitting media in laminar layer along the cylinders has been analyzed. Governing equation are transformed to local nonsimilarity equations by the dimensional analysis. The effects of the Stark number, Prandtl number, Optical radius and wall emissivity are mainly investigated. For the formal solution a numerical integration is performed and the results are compared with those obtained by P-1 and P-3 approximation. The results show that boundary layers consist of conduction-convection-radiation layer near the wall and convection-radiation layer far from the wall. As the Stark number of wall emissivity increases the local radiative heat flux is increased. The Pradtl number or curvature variations do not affect the radiative heat flux from the wall, but The Prandtl number or wall emissivity variations affect the conduction heat flux. Consequently the total heat flux from the wall are affected by the Prandtl number or wall emissivity variation.

  • Addition effects of metal oxide on the characteristics of infrared radiator of porous cordierite have been investigated. The porosity was increased with adding the graphite for 2MgO $.$ 2A1$_2$O$_3$$.$5SiO$_2$. The microstructure and the spectral emissivity were investigated as a function of metal oxide additives. The prosity and the emissivity were decreased with increasing amounts of CuO additives. The prosity and the emissivity were increased with increasing amounts of CoO, MnO$_2$ additives. The infrared radiator of cordierite system which spectral emissivity was 0.927 and 0.928 at from 5$\mu\textrm{m}$ to 20$\mu\textrm{m}$ wavelength as a 9wt% of CoO and MnO$_2$ additives.
