  • In the nuclear power plant, emergency core coolant system (ECCS) is furnished at reactor coolant system (RCS) in order to cool down high temperature water in case of emergency. However, in this coolant system, thermal stratification phenomenon can be occurred due to coolant leaking in the check valve. The thermal stratification produces excessive thormal stresses at the pipe wall so as to yield thermal fatigue crack (TFC) accident. In the present study, when the turbulence penetration occurs in the branch pipe, the maximum temperature differences of fluid at the pipe cross-sections of the T-branch with thermal stratification are examine.

  • An Emergency Diesel Generator (EDG) is one of the safety related equipments of a Nuclear Power Plant. The seismic capacity of an EDG in nuclear power plants influences the seismic safety of the plants significantly. A recent study showed that the increase of the seismic capacity of the EDG could reduce the core damage frequency (CDF) remarkably. It is known that the major failure mode of the EDG is a concrete coning failure due to a pulling out of the anchor bolts. The use of base isolators instead of anchor bolts can increase the seismic capacity of the EDG without any major problems. This study introduces a seismic risk analysis method and presents sample results about the seismically isolated and conventional EDG system.

  • Reduction and prevention of human error is one of the major interests for the enhancement of system safety and availability in Nuclear Power Plants (NPPs). As human beings have become the weak point in the system safety, a systematic evaluation on human performance during emergency situation should be performed in advance to identify the potential vulnerability of human tasks. Though the data gathering and analysis from real field is an important precondition, there were no available data in nuclear field of korea. This paper presents the result of human performance analysis on emergency tasks in NNPs. Firstly, a task analysis was performed to identify the characteristics of operator tasks during emergency condition and to classify them into a set of generic emergency tasks. Secondly, simulation data were collected and analyzed for the emergency tasks using the full scope simulator of Younggwang NPPs. The analyzed human performance information cover the event diagnosis time, the execution time of each procedural step, observation parameters, typer of irrelevant response, pattern of communication among staffs, and so on. These performance data would be used for human reliability analysis and the research of human error as technical bases.

  • Impatience characteristics are an important factor to be considered in the defense field, which is sensitive to time, but there are not many cases applied. In addition, due to the difficulty of analysis that must consider various probabilistic factors (breakdown/maintenance distribution, impatience characteristics, etc.), military decision makers consider only simple data (number of occurrences per year, maintenance time, etc.) Therefore, in this study, a model capable of analyzing the performance of the emergency maintenance system for determining the appropriate size and organization of military and civilian maintenance personnel was presented in consideration of impatience characteristics and probabilistic factors. And through numerical analysis, the appropriate size of the military and civilian emergency maintenance teams was analyzed. This study is significant in that it can improve readiness of operational power and prevent waste of defense budget through efficient operation of the military's emergency maintenance system.

  • Gori-I nuclear power plant has been examining the effectiveness and efficiency of the current emergency operation procedures from human factors viewpoint. Previous study showed that some mistakes that the procedures did not comply with the writers' guidelines. Reviewing the current writers' guidelines for emergency operating procedures revealed that they lack of some important human factors rules such as enumeration of switching conditions and detailed action requirements, definite expression for setup points, description for anticipated results, and recommendation for use of present tense, affirmative sentence and active voice. This study suggested a new classification system for the writers' guideline contents supplementing the deficiencies of the current emergency operation procedure text.

  • For human error analysis, the structure and situation of a task should be analyzed in advance. The paper introduces Structured Information Analysis (SIA) as a task analysis method for error analysis, and delineates the result of application on the emergency procedure of Korean Standard Nuclear Plants (KSNPs). From the task analysis about emergency procedure of KSNP, total 72 specific task goals were identified in the level of system function, and 86 generic tasks were classified from the viewpoint of physical sameness of the task description. Human errors are dependent on task types so that the result of task analysis would be used as a basis for the error analysis on the emergency tasks in nuclear power plants.

  • In general, in an emergency generator system for an electric facility including an induction motor load, an emergency power generation facility larger than the facility load capacity is built due to the initial starting current of the induction motor. In order to reduce this economic burden, various methods to reduce the inrush current of induction motors are applied to suppress the additional expansion of generators due to the reduction of power generation facilities and the increase in electrical facilities. Among these methods, when a system with a built-in soft start function of an induction motor using an inverter is built, it is the best way to reduce the inrush current of the induction motor to less than the rated current. However, in this case, the installation cost of the inverter to drive the induction motor increases. This paper proposes a soft start method of an induction motor by expanding the frequency and voltage control operation area of an emergency generator. In addition, proposed a speed calculation method based on power factor information, which is essential information for stable soft start of an induction motor, and a method for generating a speed command value of the governor for starting with maximum torque.

  • In this paper we present the method that improve alarm security system using the electronic circuits added the emergency lamp by our proposed Algorithms. In conventional method the emergency lamp of warning & alarm system was not executed perfectly its performance because of battery with short life. For improving this problem we, using Peripheral Interface Controller IC, designed the circuit added the emergency lamp for an warning & alarm system and for prevent from stopping the electric current, and compared our proposed method with conventional method. By designing the circuit to stop up over charge we can extend life of battery, use of a stoppage of electric current in emergency and according to the lightness around. Therefore we are very convenient and profitable in our life. In this future we will study the method to lower the cost of architecture for practical utilization.

  • In Fukushima accident, when the severe accident such as a natural disaster happens, it is impossible to monitor the plant status due to a extreme environment and station blackout and most I&C systems break downs. Finally, these cause the loss of emergency cooling function and thus results in a hydrogen explosion and radiation leak. In this paper, the emergency response system is introduced that monitors and controls properly when the sever accidents like Fukushima accident happen, And the performance requirements of a wireless communication system used in the emergency respons system is described and the performance of emergency communication system is analyzed using the markov model.
