  • This study evaluates the performance of a coil spring-viscous damper system for the vibration and seismic isolation of an Emergency Diesel Generator (EDG) by measuring its operational vibration and seismic responses. The vibration performance of a coil spring-viscous damper system was evaluated by the vibration measurements for an identical EDG set with different base systems - one with an anchor bolt system and the other with a coil spring-viscous damper system. The seismic performance of the coil spring-viscous damper system was evaluated by seismic tests with a scaled model of a base-isolated EDG on a shaking table. The effects of EDG base isolation on the fragility curve and core damage frequency in a nuclear power plant were also investigated through a case study.

  • In general, in an emergency generator system for an electric facility including an induction motor load, an emergency power generation facility larger than the facility load capacity is built due to the initial starting current of the induction motor. In order to reduce this economic burden, various methods to reduce the inrush current of induction motors are applied to suppress the additional expansion of generators due to the reduction of power generation facilities and the increase in electrical facilities. Among these methods, when a system with a built-in soft start function of an induction motor using an inverter is built, it is the best way to reduce the inrush current of the induction motor to less than the rated current. However, in this case, the installation cost of the inverter to drive the induction motor increases. This paper proposes a soft start method of an induction motor by expanding the frequency and voltage control operation area of an emergency generator. In addition, proposed a speed calculation method based on power factor information, which is essential information for stable soft start of an induction motor, and a method for generating a speed command value of the governor for starting with maximum torque.

  • In order to provide the necessary operation flexibility during the Nuclear power operation, the extension of existing allowed outage time(AOT) is needed. The extension of AOT affects the Nuclear power plant safety. The validity of changed technical specification requirements should be proved by the safety assessments. In this paper, we evaluated the extension of emergency diesel generator AOT for a single inoperable emergency diesel generator(EDG) from 3days to 7days, 10days and 14days. Finally, the AOT extension contributes the NPP performances through decreasing the unexpected plant trips, reinforcing maintenance and avoiding risks due to unnecessary operation mode changes when the NPP is under the surveillance tests or maintenance.

  • This paper resents digital controller of emergency power generator system. The controller offers an integrated alternative for Genset control, metering and remote monitoring. Proposed controller used 80c196kc one chip microprocessor for digital control, it measures parameters of generator and provides output signals to control starting and stopping of generator. Additionally protection and alarm functions are considered to system stability. As almost parts of controller are embedded by digital microprocessor and FPGA techniques, the controller has a more flexible feature and an improvement of precision. The developed system has a big merit economically and is suitable for any kW size generator.

  • Emergency generators normally use diesel engines. The generators need to conduct weekly no-load operation inspections to ensure stable performance at emergency situations. In particular, the generators with large diesel engines mainly use rectangle type filter substrates. In order to minimize hazardous emissions generated by generators, optimizing the reduction efficiency through CFD analysis of flow characteristics of PM/NOX reduction system is important. In this study, we analyzed internal flow by CFD, which is difficult to confirm by experimental method. The main factors in our numerical study are the changes of flow uniformity and back pressure. Therefore, changes in flow characteristics were studied according to urea injector locations, selective catalyst reduction (SCR) diffuser angle, and filter porosity.

  • The purpose of this study is to propose an effective operating method of a power generator used by the Emergency Power System in case of a simultaneous fire and of the limitations of the interlock system the power supply from the emergency power generator. On the Emergency Power System with Reserved Fire-fighting Power (RFP), in case of an overload, the collective control Emergency Power System signals the main circuit breaker to shut off the supply to the emergency load, leaving the supply to the firefighting load uninterrupted to the end. The sequential control Emergency Power System signals the firefighting power supply to shut off the fire stage of the emergency load and continues to monitor the power supply. If an overload happens again from increased firefighting load, the sequential control Emergency Power System sends a secondary signal to shut down the second stage of the emergency load.

  • The purpose of this paper is to present a model for operating an emergency power system(EPS) that can secure a sufficient power supply used in case of a fire by analyzing the status of power supplies for emergency and firefighting operations. Investigations on the one of the causes of the operational failure of firefighting systems show evidence of EPS. Generally, when power to a building is interrupted, EPS supplies the emergency load(excepted firefighting load) first. When a power outage and a fire occur simultaneously, the EPS must be able to supply both the emergency load and the firefighting load, especially the firefighting load to the end. However, in order to save construction costs, emergency power generators in apartment, commercial, and business buildings can satisfy only one of the required loads. In cases like this, when a power outage and a fire occur simultaneously, there is a danger of firefighting equipment not operating due to insufficient power supply from the emergency generator. Therefore, an EPS must have a reserved firefighting power that can supply both the firefighting and the emergency load. Such EPS, when faced with a danger of an overload, will shut down the supply to all or part of the emergency load, thus securing a continuous power supply to the firefighting equipment. The generator power system with reserved firefighting power (RFP) will also have an indicator to show that the selective control is being used. General power generation systems for emergency load and firefighting load were found to have a demand factor of 50-60% with a lump. However, when installing an EPS, the builders must choose the higher demand factor suggested according to the official approval demand factor of the building.

  • The ESS load test device (ELTD) can store and exchange electrical energy during the load test of an emergency generator. On the other hand, it is difficult to commercialize ELTDs based on Li-ion batteries because of the high initial cost, which is higher than a load bank test. If the trade of electrical energy stored in ELTD during the test of an emergency generator is considered, it may be possible to commercialize the ELTD. Therefore, this paper proposes an economic model of ELTD composed of the costs and benefits by considering electrical energy trade to perform accurately economic evaluations of an ELTD. From the simulation results of the economic evaluations of an ELTD and the load bank method, it was found that the commercialization of ELTD is possible when the trade in electrical energy in ELTDs is considered.

  • The nuclear power plants in South Korea have been designed in accordance with the U.S. Regulatory Guide 1.60 (R.G 1.60) design spectrum of which the peak frequency range is 2-10 Hz. The characteristics of the earthquakes at the Korea nuclear power plant sites were observed to be closer to that of Central and Eastern United States (CEUS) than the R.G 1.60, which is a lower amplification in a low frequency range, and a higher amplification in a high frequency range. The possibility of failure for sensitive power plant components in the high frequency range has been considered and evaluated. In this study, in order to improve the reliability of nuclear plant and administrative control procedures, seismic tests of an emergency diesel generator (EDG) were conducted using a shaking table under both high and low frequency ranges. From the tests, oil/lubricant leaks from the bolt connections, the fuel filter and the fuel inlet were observed. Therefore, the check list of nuclear plant components after an earthquake should include bolt connections of EDG as well as anchor bolts.
