  • High capacity UPS and emergency generators are commonly employed at facilities where power interruption is not allowed. Nowadays, combinations of existing commercial incoming power and an emergency generator or combination of multiple generators and CTTS(Closed Transition Transfer Switch) is adopted sometimes for more reliable power supply. In this paper, application of CTTS and STS(Static Transfer Switch) to dual-power line is suggested for highly reliable uninterruptible power. By realizing such a system, construction of incoming power facilities, installation of emergency generator and large capacity UPS can be omitted, through which saving of the installation space and corresponding capital investment can be expected.

  • These days, most of electric power facilities need high stability. Therefore integrated system has been required to monitor and control electronic power distribution system in fields at all times when the interruption of electric power has occurred. To construct this system, unit that convert and process the input signal from fields needed. And for control and monitoring from remote place MMI software is required. Lastly network equipments are required for real-time communications. So, in this paper, units for control and monitoring of emergency power generator and for electric power monitoring in normal electric power and interruption of electric power are developed. Also integrated remote system for monitoring in remote is developed.

  • An Emergency Diesel Generator (EDG) is one of the safety related equipments of a Nuclear Power Plant. The seismic capacity of an EDG in nuclear power plants influences the seismic safety of the plants significantly. A recent study showed that the increase of the seismic capacity of the EDG could reduce the core damage frequency (CDF) remarkably. It is known that the major failure mode of the EDG is a concrete coning failure due to a pulling out of the anchor bolts. The use of base isolators instead of anchor bolts can increase the seismic capacity of the EDG without any major problems. This study introduces a seismic risk analysis method and presents sample results about the seismically isolated and conventional EDG system.

  • This paper presents preventive and emergency control measures for on line transient stability (security) enhancement. For insecure operating state, generation rescheduling based on a real power generation shift factor (RPGSF) is proposed as a preventive control measure to bring the system back to secure operating state. For emergency operating state, two emergency control strategies namely generator shedding and load shedding have been developed. The proposed emergency control strategies are based on voltage magnitudes and rotor trajectories data available through Phasor Measurement Units (PMUs) installed in the systems. The effectiveness of the proposed approach has been investigated on IEEE-39 bus test system under different contingency and fault conditions and application results are presented.

  • Recently, lack of power reserve margin was observed quite often. In this paper, we studied the method to secure power source for a short time, to cut the utility power peak load, and to reduce the users electricity bills. Emergency diesel generator of an office building is to be converted into a dual-fuel engine generator which is responsible for a portion of the peak load. Compared to the conventional diesel fuel generator, the proposed dual-fuel engine is able to reduce the generation power cost by dual-fuel combustion, and it also mitigates the building's utility power peak load by charging the building's peak load. If the dead resources (a group of emergency dual-fuel engine generators), as a Virtual Power Plant, are operating in peak time, we can significantly reduce future large power development costs. We investigated the current general purpose electricity bills as well as the records of the building electric power usage, and calculated diesel engine generator renovation costs, generation fuel costs, driving conditions, and savings in electricity bills. The proposed dual-fuel engine generation method reduces 18.1% of utility power peak load, and turned out to be highly attractive investment alternative which shows more than 27% of IRR, 76 million won of NPV, and 20~53 months of payback periods. The results of this study are expected to be useful to developing the policy & strategy of the energy department.

  • Diesel generator is most widely used for supplying of emergency electrical power. There have been extensive research efforts to develop ways to Ensure stable electrical power delivery to the loads using hybrid power sutures, such as power source, storage batteries, fuel cells and solar cells. Furthermore, as the role of these diesel generators for emergency electrical power supply has recently become very important, they should assure high reliability and flexibility according to the operation load. Therefore, in this paper, we introduce a controller to be used in diesel generator toenable tracking control of maximum power according to the load variation and suppressing high-order harmonics while maintaining stable frequency.

  • This study evaluates the performance of a coil spring-viscous damper system for the vibration and seismic isolation of an Emergency Diesel Generator (EDG) by measuring its operational vibration and seismic responses. The vibration performance of a coil spring-viscous damper system was evaluated by the vibration measurements for an identical EDG set with different base systems - one with an anchor bolt system and the other with a coil spring-viscous damper system. The seismic performance of the coil spring-viscous damper system was evaluated by seismic tests with a scaled model of a base-isolated EDG on a shaking table. The effects of EDG base isolation on the fragility curve and core damage frequency in a nuclear power plant were also investigated through a case study.

  • Recently, the electric device has been launching owing to the development of industry. That development also can maximize the efficiency of generator. The emergency rescue vehicle operation differs from ordinary vehicles in engine life and usage distances. For the application of this system, this research proposes the ways to operate the emergency rescue vehicle operations more efficiently. Currently, many power systems, especially motors, developed with a large output of power. It is possible to produce electricity in the engine room with enough space and to operate all equipment within the rating load capacity.

  • As a result of increasing power demand and concern about power supply shortage in the world, various energy sources without depletion of fossil fuel are installed to electrical network. Above all, nuclear energy can be considered as the most economical energy source to generate electricity. But recently, due to problem of safety which has emerged as a key social issue, additional construction of nuclear power plants is difficult. In order to replace nuclear power, researches on the emergency generator have been actively conducting. This study conducted a survey of public institutions about specification of backup generator system and current states to secure available capacity.
