Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine if simulation training affects new graduate critical care nurses' knowledge, self-efficacy, and performance ability in emergency situations. Methods: Forty new graduate critical care nurses were randomly assigned to either an experimental or a control group. The experimental group had didactic with simulation. The control group received only didactic without simulation about emergency situations. The data were collected before and after the training interventions. An independent t-test used for difference among variables. Results: There were no significant demographic differences between the two groups or any differences on data collected knowledge, self-efficacy and performance ability. Following the training, there were significant performance ability scores (p<.001) among the nurses receiving didactic with simulation. There were no significant difference between the two groups relative to knowledge scores (p=.117), or the self-efficacy scores (p=.100). Conclusion: This study showed that simulation training for new graduate critical care nurses is useful to improve performance ability on emergency situations. Hence, providing simulation training to critical care nurses during an orientation period would improve quality of critical care nursing and help the new graduates nurse's adaptation.
Purpose: This study was aimed to describe Helicopter Emergency Medical Services (HEMS) and analyze the flight nurses' activities in HEMS. Methods: Data were collected retrospectively from the air transportation reports that contained data of 168 patients transported by aircraft to G University medical center in Incheon since June, 2012 to March, 2013. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, and Mann-Whitney U test. Results: Average distance of flights was 44.0 km, duration of field treatment took 13.6 minutes, and duration of a flight from scene to hospital was 14.5 minutes. Nursing activities were categorized into 12 direct nursing activities and 5 nursing management activities, and a total number of 7806 nursing activities were occurred in HEMS. The most frequently performed nursing activity was measurement and monitoring (27.9%) followed by medication (11.5%) and respiratory management (8.7%). The most frequent nursing management were information management (11.0%). Nursing activities performed were significantly different depending on the patient's level of consciousness, cause of illness, crew configuration, and type of transportation. Conclusion: This study described HEMS nursing activities performed by flight nurses. Difference in nursing activities according to patient characteristics, crew configuration and type of transportation requires flight nurses to be prepared through educational programs to improve nursing activities and nursing management during air transportation.
Various accidents and injuries are currently occurring in Korea at increasingly high rates. Good quality emergency care service is urgently needed to cope with these various forms of accidents and injuries. In order to develop a sound emergency care system, there need to be a plan to educate and train professionals specifically in emergency care. One solution for the on going problem would be to educate and train emergency clinical nurse specialists. This study on a strategy for curriculum development for emergency clinical nurse specialist was based on the following five content areas, developed from literature related to the curriculum of emergency nursing and emergency care situation : 1. Nurses working in the emergency rooms of three university hospitals were analyzed for six days to identify categories of nursing activities. 2. Two hundreds and eleven nurses working in the emergency rooms of 12 university hospitals were surveyed to identify needs for educational content that should be included in a curriculum for the clinical nurse specialist. 3. Examination of the environment in which emergency management was provided. 4. Identification of characteristics of patients in the emergency room. 5. The role of emergency clinical nurse specialist was identified through literature, recent data, and research materials. The following curriculum was formulated using the above mentioned process. 1. The philosophy of education for emergency clinical nurse specialist was established through a realistic philosophical framework. In this frame, client, environment, health, nursing, and learning have been defined. 2. The purpose of education is framed on individual development, social structure, nursing process and responsibility along with the role and function of the emergency clinical nurse specialist. 3. The central theme was based on human, environment, health and nursing. 4. The elements of structure in the curriculum content were divided to include two major threads, I, e., vertical and horizontal : The vertical thread to consist of the client, life cycle, education, research, leadership and consultation, and the horizontal thread to consist of level of nursing (prevention to rehabilitation), and health to illness based on the health care system developed by Betty Neuman system model. 5. Behavioral objectives for education were structured according to the emergency clinical nurse specialist role and function as a master degree prepared in various emergency settings. 6. The content of the curriculum consisted of three core courses(9 credits), five major courses(15 credits), six elective courses(12 credits) and six prerequisite courses (12 credits). Thus 48 credits are required. Recommendations : 1. To promote tile quality of the emergency care system, the number of emergency professionals, has to be expanded. Further the role and function of the emergency clinical nurse specialist needs to be specified in both the medical law and the Nursing Practice Act. 2. In order to upgrade the qualification of emergency clinical nurse specialists, the course should be given as part of the graduate Program. 3. Certification should be issued through the Korean Nurses Association.

This study evaluated the effect of simulation training on cardiac arrest in hospitals for inactive nurses with 360 VR content, and attempted to prepare basic data for simulation training for inactiv nurses in the future. The design of this study is an experiment study before and after a single group. The study period was from October 13, 2020 to December 17, 2020. The subjects of the study were a total of 21 nurses who participated in the education program for inactive nurses. For simulation training for inactive nurses, Microsoft Powerpoint, hybrid simulation, high-fidelity simulation, and 360 VR content were applied for theories education and practical education. As a result of the study, the satisfaction level of the curriculum for the cardiac arrest situation in the hospital for inactive nurses was 4.78±0.36 points out of 5 points. Understanding of education was 4.71±0.46 points out of 5 points. Usefulness of education was 4.80±0.40 points out of 5 points. Confidence in airway maintenance before and after training, BLS review, manual defibrillator, emergency medication administration, airway maintenance, emergency situation simulation, and debriefing were all significant. According to the results of this study, simulation training of the situation of cardiac arrest in the hospitals for inactive nurses was effective. In future studies, it will be necessary to develope and verify specific teaching and learning methods by applying various cases of cardiac arrest situations in consideration of the type of hospitals.

The purpose of this study was to identify the effects of visual programs on job stress and burnout in emergency room nurses. This study used a nonequivalent control group pretest-posttest design. There were 26 participants in the experimental group and 27 in the control group. Data collection took place from December 12, 2017 to February 17, 2018. The program comprised eight weekly 120-minutes sessions, which included understanding and assessing job stress and burnout. Data were analyzed using the Chi-square test, paired t-test, and independent t-test. As a result, levels of job stress (t=-20.09, p<.001) and burnout (t=-22.31, p<.001) decreased significantly in the experimental group. The results suggest that the Visual Media Program could be an effective strategy for reducing job stress and burnout. Therefore, it is deemed a useful intervention for improving the quality of nursing care provided in emergency rooms.

Emergency room nurses whom exposed to more confused environment, violence, and medical disputes feel anxiety, due to increasing of demands and needs of emergency room services. Emergency room nurse anxiety needs to intervention in order to relieve emergency room nurses from anxiety, because it is an important factor that decreases job skill and satisfaction. In this paper, we examine whether to improve the effect of music intervention on emergency room nurse anxiety through appreciation of music. We used vocal music and a SAI(State Anxiety Inventory) tool for measuring the effect of music on emergency room nurse anxiety and physiological responses. Experimental results showed that vocal music intervention reduces emergency room nurse anxiety and physiological responses.
Purpose: This study aimed to develop a triage competency scale (TCS) for emergency nurses, and to evaluate its validity and reliability. Methods: Preliminary items were derived based on the attributes and indicators elicited from a concept analysis study on triage competency. Ten experts assessed whether the preliminary items belonged to the construct factor and determined the appropriateness of each item. A revised questionnaire was administered to 250 nurses in 18 emergency departments to evaluate the reliability and validity of the scale. Data analysis comprised item analysis, confirmatory factor analysis, contrasted group validity, and criterion-related validity, including criterion-related validity of the problem solving method using video scenarios. Results: The item analysis and confirmatory factor analysis yielded 5 factors with 30 items; the fit index of the derived model was good (${\chi}^2/df=2.46$, Root Mean squared Residual=.04, Root Mean Squared Error of Approximation=.08). Additionally, contrasted group validity was assessed. Participants were classified as novice, advanced beginner, competent, and proficient, and significant differences were observed in the mean score for each group (F=6.02, p=.001). With reference to criterion-related validity, there was a positive correlation between scores on the TCS and the Clinical Decision Making in Nursing Scale (r=.48, p<.001). Further, the total score on the problem solving method using video scenarios was positively correlated with the TCS score (r=.13, p=.04). The Cronbach's ${\alpha}$ of the final model was .91. Conclusion: Our TCS is useful for the objective assessment of triage competency among emergency nurses and the evaluation of triage education programs.
Purpose: This study aimed to investigate the hospital nurses' knowledge, emergency coping ability and educational need about nursing care for patients applied the home mechanical ventilator (PaHMV) and to compare the variables between yes or not experienced on that. Methods: Participants were 91 hospital nurses who worked at the wards where PaHMV can be highly admitted such as respiratory internal medicine, rehabilitation medicine, neurology and emergency room. Data were collected by questionnaires. The analytic methods were $n(%)/M{\pm}SD$, t-test/ANOVA and $X^2-test/ANCOVA$. Results: Knowledge and emergency coping ability were low as $2.27{\pm}0.52$(4 points) and $78.72{\pm}8.06$(100 points) respectively. But educational need was high as $3.10{\pm}0.34$(4 points). Knowledge and emergency coping ability showed the significant differences between two groups (p<.001, p=.048), and the scores of experienced nurses were higher. But the educational need didn't show the significant difference (p=.974). Conclusion: These findings indicate that education on nursing care of PaHMV is needed for hospital nurse. So we have to develop the educational program on nursing care of PaHMV and then operate it with practice and site education.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of a violence coping program (VCP) based on Polk's middle-range theory of resilience on nursing competency, resilience, burnout, and the ability to cope with violence in nurses working in emergency rooms. Methods: A quasi-experimental study, with a nonequivalent control group and a pretest-posttest design, was conducted. Participants were 36 nurses who worked in emergency rooms and had experienced violence; 18 nurses from D hospital and 18 nurses from C hospital were assigned to the experimental and control groups, respectively. The experimental group received the VCP twice per week for 8 weeks. Results: Levels of resilience, F=59.41, p<.001, active coping behavior, ${\chi}^2=33.09$, p<.001, and nursing competency, F=59.41 p<.001, increased significantly and levels of passive coping behavior, ${\chi}^2=22.92$, p<.001, and burnout, F=52.74, p<.001, decreased significantly in the experimental group. Conclusion: The results suggest that the VCP could be an effective strategy for reducing burnout and improving resilience, active coping behavior, and nursing competency. Therefore, it would be a useful intervention for improving the quality of nursing care provided in emergency rooms.

The aim of this study is to identify the influence of low back pain experienced by emergency room (ER) nurses and the mediating effect of impairments in the activities of daily living (ADL). The subjects of the study were 188 clinical nurses employed in emergency rooms at high-level hospitals in Daegu and Gyeongsangbuk-do. The collected data were analyzed using a program called SPSS 22.0, and the methods used include descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson correlation analysis, and regression analysis. The results of the study are as follows: First, low back pain in emergency room nurses positively correlated with impairments in the ADL and depression. Impairments in the ADL also positively correlated with depression. Second, low back pain in ER nurses influenced their depression, which was found to be mediated by the ADL.
