  • In this paper, we propose to solve the problem of increasing system memory usage due to an increase in the number of mapping information management when using a NAND flash memory-based storage device in an existing sector-based file system. The proposed technique is to store only mapping information in page units based on index blocks and manage them in block units. To this end, the proposed technique uses a sequential offset for storing and managing a plurality of mapping information in one page in a small block, and a reverse offset for a spare page corresponding to a change in mapping information in the block. Through this, the proposed technique has the advantage that the number of block-unit deletions is less than that of the existing technique, and the system memory usage required for mapping information management is low. Reduced by about 32%.

  • Recently, due to the rapid diffusion of intelligent systems and IoT technologies, power saving techniques in real-time embedded systems has become important. In this paper, we propose P-GA (Parallel Genetic Algorithm), a scheduling algorithm aims at reducing the power consumption of real-time systems in multi-core hybrid memory environments. P-GA improves the Proportional-Fairness (PF) algorithm devised for multi-core environments by combining the dynamic voltage/frequency scaling of the processor with the nonvolatile memory technologies. Specifically, P-GA applies genetic algorithms for optimizing the voltage and frequency modes of processors and the memory types, thereby minimizing the power consumptions of the task set. Simulation experiments show that the power consumption of P-GA is reduced by 2.85 times compared to the conventional schemes.

  • An image is partitioned into non-overlapping $8{\times}8$ blocks fer JPEG compression. A scan order converter is placed before the JPEG encoder to provide $8{\times}8$ blocks from the pixels in raster scan order. In general, its architecture requires two line memories for storing eight lines separately to allow the concurrent memory access by both the camera and JPEG processors. Although such architecture is simple to be implemented, it can be inefficient due to too excessive memory requirement as the image resolution increases. However, no deterministic addressing equation has been developed for scan conversion. In this paper, an effective memory addressing algorithm is proposed that can be devised only by adders and subtracters to implement a scan converter based on the single line memory.

  • Flash memory is mostly used on smart devices and embedded systems because of its nonvolatile memory, low power, quick I/O, resistant shock, and other benefits. Generally the typical file systems base on the NAND flash memory are YAFFS2, JFFS2, UBIFS, and etc. In this paper, we had variously made an experiment regarding I/O performance using our schemes and the UBIFS of the latest Linux Kernel. The proposed I/O performance analyses were classified as a sequential access and a random access. Our experiment consists of 6 cases using kmalloc(), vmalloc(), and kmem_cache(). As a result of our experiment analyses, the sequential reading and the sequential rewriting increased by 12%, 11% when the Case 2 has applied vmalloc() and kmalloc() to the UBI subsystem and the UBIFS. Also, the performance improved more by 7.82%, 6.90% than the Case 1 at the random read and the random write.

  • The flash memory is widely used as a main storage of embedded devices. It is adopted as a storage of database as growing the capacity of the flash memory. We run TPC-C benchmark on various FTL algorithms. But, the database shows poor performance on flash memory because the characteristic of I/O requests is full random. In this paper, we show the performance of all existing FTL algorithms is very poor. Especially, the FTL algorithm known as good at small mobile equipment shows worst performance. In addition, the chip-inter leaving which is a technique to improve the performance of the flash memory doesn't work well. In this paper, we inform you the reason that we need a new FTL algorithm and the direction for the database in the future.

  • In recent memories, repair is an unavoidable method to maintain its yield and quality. Although many word oriented memories as well as embedded memories in system-on-chip (SOC) consists of multiple local memory blocks with a global spare architecture, most of previous studies on built-in redundancy analysis (BIRA) algorithms have focused on single memory block with a local spare architecture. In this paper, a new BIRA algorithm for multiple blocks with a global spare architecture is proposed. The proposed BIRA is basd on CRESTA which is able to achieve optimal repair rate with almost zero analysis time. In the proposed BIRA, all repair solutions for local memory blocks are analyzed by local analyzers which belong to each local memory block and then compared sequentially and judged whether each solution can meet the limitation of the global spare architecture or not. Experimental results show that the proposed BIRA achieves much faster analysis speed compared to previous BIRAs with an optimal repair rate.

  • This paper presents an intelligent prefetching technique that significantly improves performance of hybrid fash-disk storage, a combination of flash memory and hard disk. Since flash memory embedded in a hybrid device is much faster than hard disk in terms of I/O operations, it can be utilized as a 'cache' space to improve system performance. The basic strategy for prefetching is to utilize sequential pattern mining, with which we can extract the access patterns of objects from historical access sequences. We use two techniques for enhancing the performance of hybrid storage with prefetching. One of them is to modify a FAST algorithm for mapping the flash memory. The other is to extend the unit of prefetching to a block level as well as a file level for effectively utilizing flash memory space. For evaluating the proposed technique, we perform the experiments using the synthetic data and real UCC data, and prove the usability of our technique.

  • Flash memory is non-volatile and can retain data even after system is powered off. Besides, it has many other features such as fast access speed, low power consumption, attractive shock resistance, small size, and light-weight. As its price decreases and capacity increases, the flash memory is expected to be widely used in consumer electronics, embedded systems, and mobile devices. Flash storage systems generally adopt a software layer, called FTL. In this research, we proposed a new FTL mechanism for overcoming the major drawback of conventional block mapping algorithm. In addition to the block mapping table, a index block mapping table with a small size is used to indicate sector location. The proposed indexed block mapping algorithm by adding a small size. By the simulation result, the proposed FTL provides an enhanced speed than a conventional hybrid mapping algorithm by around 45% in average, and the requirement of mapping memory is also reduced by around 12%.
