  • Fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensors already have been the focus for structural health monitoring (SHM) due to their distinguishing advantages. However, as bare optical fiber is very fragile, bare FBG strain sensor without encapsulation can not properly be applied in practical infrastructures. Therefore encapsulation techniques for making encapsulated FBG strain sensor show very important in pushing forward the application of FBG strain sensors in SHM. In this paper, a simplified approximate method to analyze the stress transferring rules for embedded FBG strain sensors in concrete monitoring is put forward according to mechanics of composite materials. Shear lag theory is applied to analyze the stress transferring rule of embedded FBG strain sensor in measured host material at the first time. The measured host objects (concrete) and the encapsulated FBG strain sensor are regarded as a composite, and then the stress transfer formula and stress transfer coefficient of encapsulated FBG strain sensor are obtained.

  • During the installation of drilled shafts in very soft ground, to keep the pile shape and to central concrete quality, casing method (wrinkled pipe and embedded steel pipe) and non-casing method have been used. In the construction cost, non-casing method was the most economical. When the wrinkled pipe and the embedded steel pipe casing method are used, an increase of 133% and 123% in the construction cost could be seen. When concrete for drilled shaft was placed under groundwater, underwater unseparation concrete would be used to restrain the concretes's material separation and to control the concrete quality. On the condition of required unseparable and (lowing property was assured, use of less amount of mixed material and flowing material must be recommended.

  • The purpose of this study is to compare the amount of critical chloride of rebar embedded in concrete according to the substitution rate of admixture. In order to determine the starting point of corrosion of rebar, electrodes were embedded in concrete, chloride was supplied, and OCP of rebar was observed in real time. The amount of the contaminants in the concrete surrounding the rebar was judged to be the critical corrosion chloride contents of the rebar at the start of the corrosion. As a result of the comparative evaluation, it was confirmed that the critical chloride contents of the rebar decreased with increasing the substitution ratio of the admixture.

  • The effects of various forces acting on concrete pole are analyzed using finite element method how the forces affect on ground displacement. The soil types, wind load location of anchor block embedded depth of pole, and distance between poles are varied to find out effects on lateral displacement. Anchor block is effective when it is located at 1/4 of embedded depth The displacement is decreases as elastic modulus increases. Concrete reinforcement for loosened ground is necessary for double poles because double poles cause large excavation. When embedded depth ratio decrease, lateral displacement increase as closer to ground surface. Large embedded depth is effective to reduce lateral displacement, and the distance between poles is not much large factor.

  • In the present study, the stability of a compressed air energy storage cavern was numerically assessed by concrete plug shapes in order to investigate the optimal shape of concrete plug. The concrete plugs were cylindrical, embedded cylindrical, tapered, and wedged in shape. The stability assessment was carried out based on factor of safety through a strength reduction method and a volume ratio which refers to the ratio of the volume of yield regions in concrete induced by internal pressure to all concrete volume. The results from the present study indicated that the embedded cylindrical and taper shaped plugs were mechanically more stable than the cylindrical and wedge shaped plugs. However, from a comparison of stress distributions in rock mass between the embedded cylindrical and taper shaped plugs, the taper shaped plug was found to be more optimal than the embedded cylindrical plug, since the embedded cylindrical plug caused more stress concentration in the interface between the plug and rock mass than the taper shaped plug.

  • In this paper, finite element with embedded discontinuous line is introduced in order to avoid the difficulties of adding new nodal points along with crack growth in discrete crack model. With the discontinuous element using discontinuous shape function, stiffness matrix of finite element is derived and dual mapping technique for numerical integration is employed. Using the finite element program made with employed algorithms, algorithm is verified and fracture analysis of simple concrete beam is performed.

  • Smart structural system is defined as structural system with a certain-level of autonomy relying on the embedded functions of sensors, actuators and processors, that can automatically adjust structural characteristics, in response to the change in external disturbance and environments, toward structural safety and serviceability as well as the extension of structural service life. In this study, carbon and glass hybrid fiber materials were investigated fundamentally for the applicability of self diagnosis in smart concrete structural system as embedded functions of sensors.

  • The seismic performance of bridge piers is evaluated in general by displacement terms, which are yielded not only by the member deformation but also by the pull-out of longitudinal bars embedded into foundation concrete. It is, therefore, important to understand the characteristic of pull-out effect in the view of seismic performance. In this study the specimens with different material strengths and diameters of re-bar were tested and the stree-slip were reported.

  • This study is to investigate the effect of a retrofitted reinforced concrete frame with non-seismic details strengthened by embedded steel moment frames with an indirect joint, which mitigates the problems of the direct joint method. First, full-scale experiments were conducted to confirm the structural behavior of a 2-story reinforced concrete frame with non-seismic details and strengthened by a steel moment frame with an indirect joint. The reinforced concrete frame with non-seismic details showed a maximum strength of 185 kN at an overall drift ratio of 1.75%. The flexural-shear failure of columns was governed, and shear cracks were concentrated at the beam-column joints. The reinforced concrete frame strengthened by the embedded steel moment frames achieved a maximum strength of 701 kN at an overall drift ratio of 1.5% so that the maximum strength was about 3.8 times that of the specimen with non-seismic details. The failure pattern of the retrofitted specimen was the loss of bond strength between the concrete and the rebars of the columns caused by a prying action of the bottom indirect joint because of lateral force. Furthermore, methods are proposed for calculation of the specified strength of the reinforced concrete frame with non-seismic details and strengthened by the steel moment frame with the indirect joint.
