  • An elliptic finite difference numerical model is presented for the effective calculation of wave transformation on the water of slowly varying sea bed with currents. Elliptic governing equation has been used, which is derived by Joeng(1990) and Chae et al(1989). Numerical results are compared with analytic solution and laboratory data(Ito and Tanimoto, 1972), and show good agreement. This model is very efficient for modelling large area because of no numerical stable condition and high calculation speed. The capability and utility of the model are illustrated by application to current coexisting area.

  • By use of laboratory experiment data set for an elliptic shoal by Berkhoff et al. (1982), both accuracy and Performance tests of numerical results between PCGM (Preconditioned Conjugate Gradient Method) and PA(Parabolic Approximation) are compared. Although both results show good agreement with the experimental data the PA model gives better reproduction of the relatively high amplitudes in the section 4-5 downwave of the shoal, in comparison with the PCGM. The PA model has been proved to be a useful tool for predicting wave transformationsin large shallow water region, but it can be applied only to the case of negligible reflection. On the other hand, there is a need to improve the computational efficiency of the PCGM model which is a finite difference scheme directly derived from the mild slope equation and can handle reflection. By taking the results of th PA model as an input data of the PCGM, the CPU time can be reduced by about 40%.

  • In this paper, the authors establish the conditions for the extinction of solutions, in finite time, of the fast diffusive p-Laplace equation $u_t=div({\mid}{\nabla}u{\mid}^{p-2}{\nabla}u)+a{\int}_{\Omega}u^q(y,t)dy$, 1 < p < 2, in a bounded domain ${\Omega}{\subset}R^N$ with $N{\geq}1$. More precisely, it is shown that if q > p-1, any solution vanishes in finite time when the initial datum or the coefficient a or the Lebesgue measure of the domain is small, and if 0 < q < p-1, there exists a solution which is positive in ${\Omega}$ for all t > 0. For the critical case q = p-1, whether the solutions vanish in finite time or not depends crucially on the value of $a{\mu}$, where ${\mu}{\int}_{\Omega}{\phi}^{p-1}(x)dx$ and ${\phi}$ is the unique positive solution of the elliptic problem -div(${\mid}{\nabla}{\phi}{\mid}^{p-2}{\nabla}{\phi}$) = 1, $x{\in}{\Omega}$; ${\phi}(x)$=0, $x{\in}{\partial}{\Omega}$. This is a main difference between equations with local and nonlocal sources.

  • An implicit approach is employed to obtain a general boundary integral formulation of axisymmetric elastic problems in terms of a pair of singular integral equations. The corresponding kernel functions from the solutions of Navier's equation are derived by applying a three dimensional integral and a direct axisymmetrical approach. A numerical discretization schem including the evaluation of Cauchy principal values of the singular integral is described. Finally the typical axisymmetric elastic models are analyzed, i.e. the hollow sphere, the constant thickness and the V-notched round bar.

  • In order to predict the dispersion of a thermal discharge with strong turbulent and buoyant effects, the development of a numerical model using turbulence model and its application are significantly increased. In this study, a 3-dimensional steady-state model for the surface discharge of heated water into quiescent water body is developed. For the model closure of turbulent terms the 4-equation turbulence model is used. For economic numerical simulation, the elliptic governing equations are transformed to the partially parabolic equations. In general, the simulated results by the present model agree well to the experimental results by Pande and Rajaratnam. The model characteristics are presented in comparison with the predicted results of the 2-equation turbulence model by McGuirk and Rodi. Applying the 4-equation turbulence model to the Korea nuclear unit 1 at Kori site, feasibility and efficiency of the present model are validated.

  • The conventional segregated finite element formulation produces a small and simple matrix at each step than in an integrated formulation. And the memory and cost requirements of computations are significantly reduced because the pressure equation for the mass conservation of the Navier-Stokes equations is constructed only once if the mesh is fixed. However, segregated finite element formulation solves Poisson equation of elliptic type so that it always needs a pressure boundary condition along a boundary even when physical information on pressure is not provided. On the other hand, the conventional integrated finite element formulation in which the governing equations are simultaneously treated has an advantage over a segregated formulation in the sense that it can give a more robust convergence behavior because all variables are implicitly combined. Further it needs a very small number of iterations to achieve convergence. However, the saddle-paint-type matrix (SPTM) in the integrated formulation is assembled and preconditioned every time step, so that it needs a large memory and computing time. Therefore, we newly proposed the P2PI semi-segregation formulation. In order to utilize the fact that the pressure equation is assembled and preconditioned only once in the segregated finite element formulation, a fixed symmetric SPTM has been obtained for the continuity constraint of the present semi-segregation finite element formulation. The momentum equation in the semi-segregation finite element formulation will be separated from the continuity equation so that the saddle-point-type matrix is assembled and preconditioned only once during the whole computation as long as the mesh does not change. For a comparison of the CPU time, accuracy and condition number between the two methods, they have been applied to the well-known benchmark problem. It is shown that the newly proposed semi-segregation finite element formulation performs better than the conventional integrated finite element formulation in terms of the computation time.

  • In the numerical analysis of incompressible unsteady Navier-stokes equation, large time is required for solving the pressure Poisson equation of the elliptic type at each time step. In this paper, a numerical analysis by the direct method is carried out to solve the pressure Poisson equation and the computing time is analyzed as mesh size increases. The pressure Poisson equation can be transformed to the boundary value problem by the Green theorem. The computing time for the convolution type of the domain integral can be reduced by using F.F.T. and the computing time in the direct method depends entirely on obtaining the solution of the boundary value problem. The numerical analysis on the known solutions is carried out and compared for the verification of the direct method. And the numerical analysis on the body boundary and domain decomposition problem are carried out with the computing time less than O($n^{3}$) in the (n.n) mesh.

  • Wave propagation is changed by the effect of shoaling, current-depth refraction and shelter-ing etc. To solve these problems. numerous models have been developed. In the present study, a coordinate system is proposed based on the wave ray equation with the wave number equation including diffraction effects . The governing equation for the study was derived from the mild slope wave equation in non-steady state, including current effects (Kirby, 1986a) and trans-formed into an orthogonal curvilinear coordinate system on the basis of the wave ray equation. To obtain a numerical solution, an explicit finite difference scheme was used, and solved by the relaxation method. This model was tested for various cases: Firstly a submersed circular shoal and a constant unit depth. Secondly a submerged elliptic shoal on a slope, and finally a breakwater harbour with obliquely incident waves on a slope. The model was found to simulate the experimental results and other theoretical results in wave height and wave angle fairy well, and the applicability of the model around an arbitrary shaped coastal structure was also verified. To demonstrate the general usefullness of the present approach , the model is to be applied to a field situation with a complex bed topography.

  • The flow field around a high-speed train including cross-wind effects has been simulated. This study solves 3-D unsteady incompressible Navier-Stokes equations in the inertial frame using the iterative time marching scheme. The governing equations are differenced with 1st-order accurate backward difference scheme for the time derivatives, 3th-order accurate QUICK scheme for the convective terms and 2nd-order accurate central difference scheme for the viscous terms. The Marker-and-Cell concept was applied to efficiently solve continuity equation, which is differenced with 2nd-order accurate central difference scheme. The 4th-order artificial damping is added to the continuity equation for numerical stability. A C-H type of elliptic grid system is generated around a high-speed train including ground. The Baldwin-Lomax turbulent model was implemented to simulate the turbulent flows. To validate the present procedure, the flow around a high speed train at constant yaw angle of $45^{\circ}\;and\;90^{\circ}$ has been simulated. The simulation shows 3-D vortex generation in the lee corner. The flow separation is also observed around the rear of the train. It has concluded that the results of present study properly agree with physical flow phenomena.

  • A numerical skill for effective treatment of inclined boundaries in a finite element method is introduced. A finite element method has been frequently used to simulate hydraulic phenomena in a coastal zone since it can be applied to irregular and complex geometry. In case elliptic partial equations are governing equations for a finite element model, however, there is a difficulty in treating boundary conditions properly for cases in which boundaries are vertically inclined. In this study, a method to treat such inclined boundaries using Bessel functions for a finite element method is introduced and compared with analytical solutions.
