  • The use of evidence is very important in scientific argumentation. This study investigated the types and levels of evidence in scientific argumentation in an elementary science class. 34 fourth graders in a class were selected as subjects, and argumentation was performed in seven lessons on 'Heat transfer and our lives' unit. Small group argumentation was recorded, transcribed and used as data for analyses. The analyses found the following results. First, in regard of the types of evidence, personal evidence dominated over authority-based evidence. Second, in the analysis of the levels of evidence, using inappropriate evidence was found to account for the highest percentage, followed by using appropriate evidence and just arguments without evidence. There were quite a lot of cases of arguments without evidence. It was found that the types and levels of evidence that students used could change depending on the relevance between experiments and argument tasks.

For this study, a total of 32 lessons (4 units) utilizing the career education programs related the science curriculum were developed. The study subjects were 128 students from Y elementary school located in Incheon. A test with regard to the science related career choice and the science related career choice factors was performed before and after the lessons. For more detailed analysis, the experimental group was divided into two groups of female and male students; students who hope and do not hope career in science-related fields. As a result of the performance of career education programs, it showed a significant improvement in the 'science related career choice'. And, it also showed all significant improvements in 'science related major/department, education lecture selection'. It was possible to know that the students who do not wish science related jobs in the future also changed their mind on to the science. In addition, all the subcategories of the 'preference for science learning' area such as 'preference for science subject', 'preference for experiment', 'recognition of science subject availability', 'recognition of the impact of teacher' showed a significant improvement. The 'perception about career related to science' showed a significant improvement on the whole. There was no significant improvement on the whole in 'participation in science related activities'.

  • The purpose of this study is to draw up the promoting plan of science preference by survey and analysis of the preference for science of the elementary students. The preference for science is defined theoretically with three categories ; they are emotional response, behavioral response and value establishment. Causal factors of the science preference were composed of individual factor, educational factor and social factor. According to this theoretical model, a questionnaire was developed, and administered to 696 students of 4,5,6 grade of randomly selected eight elementary schools all over the nation. Elementary students liked science, but they didn't want to select their future job in science-technology area. The science preference of boys was higher than that of girls. The science preference of 4th grade students was higher than that of 5th and 6th grade students. Individual factor affected the curiosity. learning interest, subject accomplishment on the science and course selection in life. Educational factor not only directly affected the curiosity. learning interest, value establishment and belief of the science but also indirectly affected the individual factor and social factor. Therefore, educational factor was the most important on the science preference. Social factor only affected the value establishment and belief on the science. Elementary students wanted to team science through experiment and they wanted science to be easier than that of now. On the analysis of result, the promoting plan of the science preference was suggested.

  • The purpose of this study was to compare and analyze the elementary science curriculum of Finland, which ranked at the first place in the science domain of Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA), a comparative study on the academic achievements of OECD member nations, for three consecutive years and recorded a high national competitiveness index, and that of South Korea, thus providing information needed to develop curriculums and textbooks in the middle of occasional curriculum revisions and giving useful implications for the implementation of curriculum in the field of education in South Korea. The research findings were as follows: First, as for the science content areas based on the ratio of large area items according to the evaluation and analysis framework of TIMSS 2007, South Korea's ratio of life, chemistry, physics, and earth hardly showed fitness for TIMSS 2007 and exhibited equal distribution among the areas. In Finland, the ratio of life, chemistry, physical, and earth was similar to the fourth grade level of TIMSS 2007. The country showed differential distribution with life accounting for the highest percentage. Second, as for the cognitive domains, South Korea showed a high percentage in "Uses and Procedures of Tools" of "1. Knowing" and "Making Connections," "Comparison/Contrast/Classification," and "Uses of Models" of "2. Application." Finland recorded a high percentage in "Information Interpretation" of "2. Application." While South Korea focused on the uses and methods of scientific instruments during scientific activities, Finland made an approach with a focus on problems related to daily life such as the interpretation of information including reports and graphs from an interpretative perspective.
