  • The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence of obesity and to examine the eating habits of elementary school students in Kwangju. The study was carried out on 931 students(male : 454, female : 477) in September and October of 1996. The results are summarized as follows ; Obesity was defined as body mass index(BMI) that exceeds 20. The rate of obesity was 10.0%(male 4.7$\%$, female 5.3$\%$) in subjects. Subjects were divided into 3 groups : normal group(BMI〈20), mildly obese group(20〈BMI〈25), and moderatly obese group(25〈BMI〈30), respectively. With regard to frequency of skipping breakfast, 9.1$\%$ of normal children and 17.5$\%$ of mildly obese children and 33.3$\%$ of moderately obese children had skipping every morning(p$\ll$0.001). With regard to the regularity of meal time, 62.1$\%$ of normal children had ‘regular meals’but 58.0$\%$ of mild obese children and 50.0$\%$ of moderate obese children had‘irregular meals’(p$\ll$0.05). With regard to meal volume, obese children consumed much more meal volume than normal children(breakfast p$\ll$0.001, lunch p〈0.005, dinner p$\ll$0.001). With regard to try to lose weight, 22.9$\%$ of normal children and 55.6$\%$ of mild obese children and 83.3$\%$ of moderated obese children indicated they had attempted(p$\ll$0.001). The results of this study showed that the prevalence of obesity in elementary school students in Kwangju has a tendency to be increased. Obese children need to correct their eating habits. This reasserts the importance of nutrition education in children through teachers, parents and dietitians. The findings of this study should be applied to nutrition education to ensure better physical fitness of children. (Korean J Community Nutrition 2(4) : 486-495, 1997)

  • A nutrition survey of 198 children, 6 to 12 years old, in the Song Myeon Elementary School and Sam Song Elementary School, located in remote villages of Gaesan county, Chung Buk province, was undertaken between July 11 and 16, 1988, to investigate dietary and nutritional status. Mean values of height, weight, sitting height, arm circumference, girths of chest, and weight for height were 98%, 96%, 101%, 94%, 103% and 98%, respectively, of Korean standards. Compared with the standards for Korean children and values for Yun Jung Elementary School children of Youido, Seoul, anthropometric data of subjects surveyed showed slightly lower results than the standards and further lower results than those of Yun Jung Elementary School children. mean hematocrit value was 39.8±3.1%. 15.3% of subjects were proven to be anemic according to the hematocrit criterion established by the WHO. Mean urinary urea nitrogen/creatinine ratio was 7.9±3.3. Energy and nutrient intake were 61.2 to 134.4% of the RDA's; except for intake of ascorbic acid, most nutrients were below the RDA's. Carbohydrate provided 72% of total energy intake; protein accounted for 11%; fat provided 17%. Family environment, anthropometric data and results of biochemical tests were positively correlated with nutrient intake. The survey emphasizes the need for a nation wide school lunch program.

  • Although the improvements in the health sanitary facilities of the elementary school were made by the implementation of the 7th curriculum, color design and concept of toilets used by lower classes students were shown to be still insufficient and so, it is also necessary to have color planning for toilets considering users' preferences. This study is targeting lower classes children of elementary schools under Seoul Gangseo Office of Education. The purpose of this study is to propose a toilet color design direction preferred by children as users. Therefore, the toilets of elementary school were investigated and at the same time, juvenile pictures were analyzed. The results of this study are that the color space used in the current design, the following gives a substantial psychological and emotional impact for many elementary school children in the developmental stages of children leads to an interesting use of color. Therefore, this study propose to improve the toilet to a more familiar environment with high accessibility considering the development of the child when using color in design space through color preference.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of parenting behavior and parent-child communication on elementary school children's multiple intelligence. 321 children selected from two elementary schools and their mothers participated in the study. Data were collected using the multiple intelligence index, parenting behavior inventory and parent-child communication index. The data were statistically analyzed using the t-test, one-way ANOVA(Duncan test), and multiple regression analysis. The study showed that there were some significant differences in children's multiple intelligence according to the children's gender, income, mother and father's educational background. There were some significant differences in children's multiple intelligence according to the parenting behavior, warmth acceptance and permissiveness nonintervention behaviors, and to the parent-child open communication and problematic communication. It was also found that children's gender, family income, warmth acceptance behavior, permissiveness nonintervention behavior, open communication and problematic communication were all significant predictors of the children's multiple intelligence. Implications based on this study are as follows; in order to increase the children' multiple intelligence, parents should be warmer and more accepting and have open communication with their children.
