The researcher conducts the following research to correctly identify the gifted children of science information. First, the researcher makes sufficient theoretic research on gifted children for the sake of definition and identification of the gifted children of information science, and reconstructed the identification principles, factors and procedures of the gifted children of information science on the basis of those of the gifted children of math and science the theories of a number of scholars and presented new methods of identifying new gifted children of information science. Second, the researcher set the identification procedures of the gifted children of information science and the relevant content and conducted the identification of gifted children through the observation and evaluation of sixth graders through three stages. Third, the researcher compares and analyzed the selected gifted children based on the identification procedures and ordinary groups of students excellent in math and science in terms of task achievement and looked into validity.
Two hundred sixty six children were retrospectively surveyed from first to fifth grade to find out the status of obesity during four years. The obesity index was gained by height and weight data from student's health file and the data about eating behaviors and weight control behaviors, etc. were collected by questionnaires. Children assigned to one of the following groups : underweight, normal, overweight and obese. The results were as follows ; 1. Obese children were 18.6%(n=27) of boys and 10.8%(n=13) of girls at fifth grade. 2. Twenty eight children among forty obese children at fifth grade were also overweight or obese at first grade, and the other twelve was normal. 3. Breakfast skipping rate was significantly high among underweight and obese group of boys(p<0.01).The most children(87.6%) had prejudice for special foods. 4. The rate of agreement between obesity index and self recognition of body image was 60.7% in boys and 63.6% in girls. 5. Forty two point five percent of children have ever tried weight control as exercise(35.7%), reducing sugars and snacks(27%), fasting(23.8%), avoiding fatty foods(12.7%), taking diet food or drug(0.8%). In conclusion, the prevalence of children obesity is gradually increasing and children tried weight control without right guidances. In order to prevent progress into adulthood obesity, nutrition education should be followed with school foodservice including the right perception for obesity, proper weight control and eating behavior modification.
This study examined the preference and consumption of chungkukjang among elementary school children in Seongnam, Korea. The subjects included 583 students(male 300, female 283) who were asked to fill out a questionnaire. The collected data were analyzed using the SAS package. The results showed that 91.9% of the female students, 91.6% of children from nuclear families, and 90.7% of children with stay-at-home mothers, consumed chungkukjang. Among the children who had eaten chungkukjang previously, most had consumed it at home, and 65.5% of the students responded that chungkukjang was tasty. The data also revealed that female students, children from nuclear families, and those with stay-at-home mothers had greater preference for chungkukjang than male students, children from extended families, and those with working mothers. When asked why they dislike chungkukjang, both male and female students who had eaten it responded because 'it smells bad' and that 'it is not tasty'. However, among the students who had never eaten it, the male students replied because 'it is not tasty'(33.3%) and that 'it is not eaten at home'(27.8%), and the primary responses of the female students were 'it is not eaten at home'(65.2%) and 'it is not tasty'(21.7%). However, the subjects who had tried chungkukjang previously answered that in the future they would like to have it more frequently, as compared to the subjects who had never eaten chungkukjang. Therefore, to increase knowledge and improve perceptions of chungkukjang foods, families should give children many opportunities to try them, and in return, children will consume chungkukjang foods with pride. Furthermore, it is important that society as well as mass media, which have great influence on children, show concern and offer support in promoting chungkukjang.
This study was performed to reveal the effects of a science experience class, in which children of low-income family(LIF) were involved. The children's science inquiry skills, science-related attitude, self-esteem and self-competence were investigated before and after the science experience class. Not only 61 children in LIF but also 75 ordinary ones participated in the class and the tests to collect the data, and interviews in which 9 children of each group participated were conducted as well. The results are as follows. First, through the science experience class, the children in LIF's average point of science inquiry skills increased meaningfully, but ordinary children's did not. Second, the science attitude's points of both increased meaningfully. Third, the children in LIF's average self-esteem point increased meaningfully, but the ordinary group's did not. Fourth, the children in LIF' self-competence increased meaningfully, but the other's did not. The children from both groups were influenced positively by the science experience class. Especially, compared with ordinary children, the children in LIF who have fewer chances of science experience than other children were more positively influenced m every aspect of this study.
Purpose: This study was conducted to figure out the physical development and health status of elementary children in poverty. Method: 306 children in poverty registered in 3 regional children centers located in Incheon were selected. The results were compared with those of the physical status of students all over the country in 2008. Result: The children in poverty were relatively poor in the growth state such as height and weight, compared with those in non-disadvantage family children. In eyesight to be corrected, the children in poverty reached 26%. As a result of a blood laboratory test, the children with high T-cholesterol reached 5.84%; high SGOT/GPT 6.3%. In anemia, 41.4% of boys in poverty were suffering from it, compared to 7.5% of girls. In Internet addiction, children in poverty showed lower value than those in non-disadvantage children, but there are correlated between CDI and internet addiction test. Conclusions: These results implies the children in poverty have more physical and emotional problems, so they are in danger of related to health. These matters mean that the management by professional health care should be provided, and the plan and policy for promoting health for the children in vulnerable group should be established and provided.
Values and attitude towards the environment begin to form in elementary school. Thus, environmental education is effective to promote children's sensibility on the environment, to increase their interest and concern on it, and to make them have friendly attitudes towards it. As a measure of such education, experiential learning activities are being emphasized, where children can see, feel and experience for themselves in a familiar environment surrounding them. Based on the results of this research, the following proposals can be made for environmental education necessary for elementary school children. i) the contents of environmental education should be selected and organized according to grades. Also, schedule should be secured to provide environmental education in certain time. ii) program should be developed to fit into local characteristics and academic level, providing connective and consistent environmental education. iii) activities for environmental education in elementary school can be effective only if connective guidances are provided among school, home and local community. iv) the recycling and separate collection activity program used in this research was limited to 3rd graders in small-size rural schools. Additional research may be necessary to see how long their attitudes last according to different grades.
Purpose: This study describes the development of a violence prevention educational program for elementary school children using empathy (VPEP-E) that teachers can use during class. Methods: Hoffman's theory of empathy and Seels and Richey's (1994) ADDIE model were applied to develop this program. Results: The developed program consisted of eight sessions: "Orientation/definition of violence and empathy", "Types and boundaries of violence", "Look into my feelings", "Say it with a facial expression", "Preventing non-empathic violence due to social prejudice", "Preventing physical violence", "Verbal and online violence prevention: empathic conversation", and "I can do well: review of the whole curriculum". The program was evaluated by 15 elementary school teachers, who considered it to be easily accessible to elementary school students. The final VPEP-E, which will be provided in eight times for 40 minutes each for fifth-grade students, will provide a basis for preventing violence by fostering empathy. Conclusion: We expect the developed educational program to be effective in preventing violence among elementary school students. However, further research involving children from various age groups is needed.
The principal objective of this study was to assess perceptions and preferences of chungkukjang in elementary school children who used a school foodservice. In this investigation, 583 elementary school students(300 boys, 283 girls) in the Seongnam area were surveyed via questionnaire, and the collected data were analyzed using the SAS package. The results demonstrated that 82.0% of students responded that they were aware of chungkukjang. Female students were more aware of chungkulgang than were male students, and children of the nuclear families were more aware of those of the extended family. With regard to the origins of their interest in chungkulgang, 51.8% of the subjects answered 'through home education' and 35.5% learned about chungkukjang 'through mass media'. Most students recognized chungkulgang as a 'healthy food' and a 'Korean traditional food'. Approximately 44% of the students ate chungkukjang in the school foodservice once per month, and 41.7% preferred this menu. Therefore, in order to increase elementary school students' knowledge and intake of chungkulgang, the school should attempt to foster the quality of chungkulgang in nutrition education, to serve chungkukjang frequently in school foodservices, and to develop recipes for tastier chungkukjang foods for children.
The purpose of this study is to investigate the attitudes of Korean parents on environmental education for their elementary children. To accomplish of this purpose, a questionnaire survey was administered to 231 (55 males, 176 females) parents from elementary school in Seoul and Gyeonggi Province, Korea. The self-reported Environmental Education Attitude Scale was revised and adopted to measure the difference among children's grade, gender, and age of parents. The SPSS 12.0 program was used to analyze the data. The major finding of this study represented that elementary parents have a great understanding about the importance of environmental education. Through the analyses, this study found several things. 1) There were significant differences among grade and age in the necessity of environmental education. However, there were no gender differences in this field. In other words, parents have strong agreement with the necessity of environmental education in childhood. 2) There were significant differences among grade in the effect of environmental education. However, there were no gender and age differences in this area. 3) There were significant differences among grade and gender in proper areas of environmental education according to academic years. However, there was no significant age difference in this questionnaire. 4) There were significant differences among grade, gender, and age group in the level of environmental education. 5) There were significant differences among grade, gender, and age in the subject for environmental education. Further implications and limitations of this study were discussed.

Objectives: The purpose of this study was to investigate the prevalence of sleep problems in Korean elementary school children and the differences in sleep problems elated to their school grade and gender. Methods : One public elementary school in Dae-gu, Korea as randomly selected. And, parents who agreed to participate this study were asked to complete a modified version of Tucson Children's Assessment of Sleep Apnea screening questionnaire (TuCASA). Results: The most common sleep problem was 'falling asleep in vehicle (44.2%)' and the prevalence rate of this problem differed by school grade. The prevalence rate of falling asleep while watching TV before 8 P.M. (8.0%), daytime fatigue (21.9%) and nocturnal enuresis during the past 6 months (5.3%) were significantly differed by school grade. The prevalence rate of falling asleep while doing home work, falling sleep during a lesson, snoring and bruxism were 12.6%, 1.0%, 26.7% and 13.2% respectively. Although these rates did not show any differences between grades, snoring as more in boys and daytime fatigue was more in girls. Conclusion: This study demonstrates that many elementary school children may have various sleep problems. Lower grade elementary schoolers had sleep problems which related to euro-developmental factors, whereas higher grade elementary schoolers had sleep problems related to sleep deprivation and stress. Finally, more female schooler showed signs of fatigue or sleepiness than male schoolers.
