  • The algorithm of natural number multiplication is one of the basic topics of elementary school mathematics. Mastery of algorithm and understanding of the principles are important educational aims. In this paper we analyzed elementary school mathematics textbooks of South Korea, the United States, Singapore, Japan. As a result of analysis, we found out that there are much differences in the teaching of multiplication with three numbers, '${\times}10$', and '${\times}tens$'. We suggested some implication for the teaching of algorithm of natural number multiplication.

  • It is interesting to know the behavior of a network from its structure. One interesting topic is to find a relation between the existence of a positive equilibrium of the reaction network and its structure. One approach to study this topic is using the concept of deficiency. In this work, we develop an algorithm and show an elementary proof of the relation based on the algorithm and deficiency.

  • This study has developed and applied an elementary EPL education program centered on execution time as an educational method for improving Computational thinking of elementary school students, and then its effect has been verified. The education program was developed based on the results of preliminary demand analysis conducted on 48 elementary school students. In order to verify the effectiveness of the education program, 25 students were asked to participate in the class of elementary school students on a seven hours for six days. Using the "Korea Bebras Challenge 2018", educational effects were analyzed through the results of pre- and post-mortem examinations, and the analysis showed that elementary EPL education centered on performance time was effective in improving computational thinking of elementary school students

  • The purpose of this study is to develop and apply the algorithm teaching materials centered on plays(ATMCP) to improve problem-solving abilities of elementary students. For this goal, the ATMCP were reviewed by the expert group and tested them out on 71 fifth-grade elementary students in Daegu, Korea during the 6 weeks. We divided students into two groups: one is the group of the ATMCP and the other is the group of conventional algorithm teaching materials(ATM). And we analyzed the change of the problem-solving ability of each group between before and after using two types of teaching materials with the Mixed ANOVA. The result showed that there was a significant difference in students' problem-solving abilities between before and after using them and the group of the ATMCP was greater improvement than the group of the conventional ATM in a problem-solving ability.

  • Software education is provided for 6th grade students. This study explored the algorithmic composition patterns of elementary school students. After investigating the algorithm for the 6th grade students, the algorithmic pattern of the learner was explored by calculating the cyclomatic complexity of MacCabe based on the structural programming technique. Students often use one or two choice structures to solve problems, which tend to be biased towards the starting and ending points of the problem. It is also passive in the use of selection structures. Algorithm composition depends on visible objects and one's own background. Therefore, in elementary school software education, it is necessary to present the task of thinking about the algorithm structure in the context of the algorithm and the students' experiences in accordance with the algorithm composition pattern.

  • In this paper, fraction division algorithms in Korean elementary mathematics textbooks are analyzed as a part of the groundwork to improve teaching methods for fraction division algorithms. There are seemingly six fraction division algorithms in ${\ll}Math\;5-2{\gg}$, ${\ll}Math\;6-1{\gg}$ textbooks according to the 2006 curriculum. Four of them are standard algorithms which show the multiplication by the reciprocal of the divisors modally. Two non-standard algorithms are independent algorithms, and they have weakness in that the integration to the algorithms 8 is not easy. There is a need to reconsider the introduction of the algorithm 4 in that it is difficult to think algorithm 4 is more efficient than algorithm 3. Because (natural number)${\div}$(natural number)=(natural number)${\times}$(the reciprocal of a natural number) is dealt with in algorithm 2, it can be considered to change algorithm 7 to algorithm 2 alike. In textbooks, by converting fraction division expressions into fraction multiplication expressions through indirect methods, the principles of calculation which guarantee the algorithms are explained. Method of using the transitivity, method of using the models such as number bars or rectangles, method of using the equivalence are those. Direct conversion from fraction division expression to fraction multiplication expression by handling the expression is possible, too, but this is beyond the scope of the curriculum. In textbook, when dealing with (natural number)${\div}$(proper fraction) and converting natural numbers to improper fractions, converting natural numbers to proper fractions is used, but it has been never treated officially.

  • The purpose of this study is to propose algorithm classification system for algorithm education for Elementary and Secondary Students. We defines the components of the algorithm and expresses the algorithm classification system by the analysis synthesis method. The contents of the study are as follows. First, we conducted a theoretical search on the classification purpose and classification. Second, the contents and limitations of the classification system for the proposed algorithm contents were examined. In addition, we examined the contents and selection criteria of algorithms used in algorithm education research. Third, the algorithm components were redefined using the core idea and crosscutting concept proposed by the NRC. And the crosscutting concept of algorithm is subdivided into algorithm data structure and algorithm design strategy, and its contents are presented using analytic synthesis classification scheme. Finally, the validity of the proposed contents was verified by the review of the expert group. It is expected that the study on the algorithm classification system will provide many implications for the contents selection and training method in the algorithm education.

  • This study analyzes the characteristics of elementary math gifted classes through the development and application of teaching and learning materials. We used the guided reinvention methods including quasi-experiential perspectives. To this end, the applicability of Lakatos' quasi-empirical mathematical philosophy in elementary mathematics was examined, and the criteria for the development of teaching and learning materials for gifted students were presented, and then this study was conducted in this theoretical background. The subjects of the study were 21 elementary students at P University's Institute of Science and Gifted Education, and non-face-to-face real-time classes were conducted. Classes were divided into introduction, deployment1, deployment2, organization stages, and in each stage, small group cooperative learning was conducted based on group activities, and in this process, the characteristics of elementary mathematics gifted were analyzed. As a result of the study, elementary mathematics gifted students did not clearly present the essence of justification in the addition algorithm of fractions, but presented various interpretations of 'wrong' mathematics. They also showed their ingenuity in the process of spontaneously developing 'wrong' mathematics. On the other hand, by taking interest in new mathematics starting from 'wrong' mathematics, negative perceptions about it could be improved positively. It is expected that the development of teaching and learning materials dealing with various and original topics for the gifted students in elementary school will proceed through follow-up research.

  • Today computer education puts an emphasis on algorithm education. There are little researches about how to express the given problem in algorithm and how to interpret the expressed algorithm. In this study play-based learning methods dealing with flow chart which is one of the expressing tools of algorithm are developed for lower graders of elementary school. Then we diagnosed the learning possibility of the tool after applying the methods in a classroom environment. There are four types of learning game activities; sequential play, selective play, repetitive play and puzzle play. Puzzle play is a game that students need to reconstruct the learned content to a real flow chart by using flow chart cards. The result of an achievement test after teaching students flow chart showed that the group who took the play-based lesson got their average score with about 7.5% higher than the group who took the ICT-based lesson. Both the groups got their average scroe of more than 9 out of 10 after the lesson. This result shows that flow chart lessons are adaptable for the lower graders of elementary school. It also shows that play-based education can be exceptionally effective.
