A change in chemical compositions of Asian dust (AD) particles can dramatically alter their optical properties, cloud-forming properties, and health effects. The present study was undertaken to evaluate this aging of AD particles by means of two complementary methods (i.e., the traditional spot test and the most advanced micro-PIXE analytical technique) for single particle analysis. Size-classified particles were sampled at the rural peninsula of Korea (Byunsan, 35.37N; 126.27E) during AD event and non-AD period in 2004. Sulfate was principally enriched on the particles in the size range of $7.65-10.85{\mu}m$ collected during AD event. The average number fraction of coarse particles ($>2.05{\mu}m$) containing chloride was 16.2% during AD event. Relatively low particles containing nitrate compared to those containing sulfate and chloride were found in AD event. Micro-PIXE elemental maps indicated that a large number of AD particles were internally mixed with man-made zinc. The highest peaks of EC and OC concentrations were appeared at $0.01-0.43{\mu}m$ particle aerodynamic diameter. High EC concentration in $PM_1$ was might be caused by the Saemangeum Seawall Project that was being conducted during our field measurement.
In Japan, research and development were undertaken on gas hydrate-side industrial processes associated with power generation system connections that may particularly be necessary to develop gas hydrated technology-based industrial systems. In so doing, data and engineering technologies useful n formulating guidelines on design of practical process were accumulated. In addition, basic research into theoretical evidence were carried out to promote and support the development of technological elements for those processes. In basic research designed to promote and support the research and development of elemental technologies, microanalyses were conducted to understand the decomposition mechanism of mixed gas hydrate. Moreover, measurement technologies that can be applied in industrial processes, such as numerical analyses and concentration measurement, were examined. Japan has developed a highly efficient gas hydrate formation process using micro-bubbles with a tubular reactor. Higher formation rate over conventional systems has been obtained by the process. As mentioned above, the technical problems were clarified and the economics were studied from a view point of the NGH technology in this study. The results can be applied for utilization and must contribute to popularization of gas hydrate production.
There were only a few reports of mercury on pulmonary artery. However, there is no data on surgery related mercury dissemination. The objective of the present article is to describe one case of postoperative injected mercury dissemination. A 19-year-old man presented severe neck pain including meningeal irritation sign and abdominal pain after injection of mercury for the purpose of suicide. Radiologic study showed injected mercury in the neck involving high cervical epidural space and subcutaneous layer of abdomen. Partial hemilaminectomy and open mercury evacuation of spinal canal was performed. For the removal of abdominal subcutaneous mercury, C-arm guided needle aspiration was done. After surgery, radiologic study showed disseminated mercury in the lung, heart, skull base and low spinal canal. Neck pain and abdominal pain were improved after surgery. During 1 month after surgery, there was no symptom of mercury intoxication except increased mercury concentration of urine, blood and hair. We assumed the bone work during surgery might have caused mercury dissemination. Therefore, we recommend minimal invasive surgical technique for removal of injected mercury. If open exposures are needed, cautious surgical technique to prohibit mercury dissemination is necessary and normal barrier should be protected to prevent the migration of mercury.

Chemical compositions of air pollutants with fine particles (<2.5 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$, PB2.5) were evaluated at background site. Kangwha. in Korea during the winter season. The data set was obtained for seventeed days with 24-hour sampling from December 11 to 16, 1996 and from January 9 to 1997. The chemical species have been measured {{{{ {SO }`_{4 } ^{2- } }}}}, {{{{ { NO}`_{3 } ^{- } }}}}, {{{{ { NH}`_{4 } ^{+ } }}}}. OC and EC in the particulate phase, NH3 HNO3, HCl and SO2 in the gas phase using the three stage filter pack method. Mean concentration ($\mu\textrm{g}$/m3) of this study were : 35.42 for PM2.5 8.78 for organic carbon (OC) 7.25 for nss {{{{ {SO }`_{4 } ^{2- } }}}}, 4.94 for {{{{ { NO}`_{3 } ^{- } }}}}, 3.58 for {{{{ { NH}`_{4 } ^{+ } }}}} and 1.48 for elemental carbon (EC) respectively. Contributive rates of major particulate components in PM2.5 were OC (25%) nss- {{{{ {SO }`_{4 } ^{2- } }}}}(20%) ,{{{{ { NO}`_{3 } ^{- } }}}}(14%) {{{{ { NH}`_{4 } ^{+ } }}}}(10%) and EC (4%) respectively and these components could be accounted for 73% of PM2.5 mass. Reactive forms of {{{{ { NH}`_{4 } ^{+ } }}}} were considered as NH4HO3 and NH4{{{{ {SO }`_{4 } ^{2- } }}}} during the sampling periods. {{{{ { NO}`_{3 } ^{- } }}}}/({{{{ { NO}`_{3 } ^{- } }}}} + HNO3) and {{{{ {SO }`_{4 } ^{2- } }}}}/({{{{ {SO }`_{4 } ^{2- } }}}} + SO2) were calculated 0.8 and 0.9 respectively. Most of these compounds might be formed in partiiculate phase in the air. Correlation coefficient between OC and EC was 0.866 which might have the same sources during the sampling periods,.
A water sample was taken from a black smoker chimney of a deep-sea hydrothermal vent by using an unmanned submersible "Dolphin 3K". The temperature of the hydrothermal fluid from the black smoker was $276^{\circ}C$. After isolation by repeated serial dilutions, An extremely thermophilic bacterial strain was selected. The strain designated as DT1331, was an anaerobic, non-motile, coccoid shaped bacterium with about 0.5 to $1.0\;\mu\textrm{m}$ in diameter. The strain DT1331 could grow up to $93^{\circ}C$, but the optimum temperature of this strain was $80^{\circ}C$. The growth occurred in the pH range of 4.5 to 8.5 and the optimum pH was 6.0. The strain DT1331 required 1% to 5% NaCl for growth and cell lysis was observed below 1% NaCl concentration. The bacterium could grow on polypeptides such as tryptone, peptone, soytone and on proteins such as casein or gelatin. However, no growth was observed on single amino acids, sugar and organic acids. Hydrogen gas was detected slightly during growth. This bacterium obligately required elemental sulfur and hydrogen sulfide gas was produced during growth.
The removal of Cd(II) and Cu(II) from aqueous solution by an agricultural solid waste biomass prepared from Moringa oleifera bark (MOB) was investigated. The biosorbent was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and elemental analysis. Furthermore, the effect of initial pH, contact time, biosorbent dosage, initial metal ion concentration and temperature on the biosorption of Cd(II) and Cu(II) were studied using the batch sorption technique. Kinetic studies indicated that the biosorption process of the metal ions followed the pseudo-second order model. The biosorption data was analyzed by the Langmuir, Freundlich, Dubinin-Radushkevich, and Temkin isotherm models. Based on the Langmuir isotherm, the maximum biosorption capacities for Cd(II) and Cu(II) onto MOB were 39.41 and 36.59 mg/g at 323 K, respectively. The thermodynamic parameters, Gibbs free energy (${\Delta}G^o$), enthalpy (${\Delta}H^o$), and entropy (${\Delta}S^o$) changes, were also calculated, and the values indicated that the biosorption process was endothermic, spontaneous and feasible in the temperature range of 303-323 K. It was concluded that MOB powder can be used as an effective, low cost, and environmentally friendly biosorbent for the removal of Cd(II) and Cu(II) ions from aqueous solution.
In this study, we have prepared three kinds of carbon nanometer tube $CNT/TiO_{2}$ electrodes through impregnation with different concentration titanium n-butoxide (TNB) solution. The prepared electrodes were characterized with surface properties, structural crystallinity, elemental identification and photoelectrocatalytic activity. The $N_2$ adsorption data showed that the composites had decreased surface area compared with the pristine CNT. This indicated the blocking of micropores on the surface of CNT, which was further supported by observation via SEM. XRD results showed patterns for the composites and a typical single and clear anatase crystal structure. The main elements such as C, O and Ti were existed for all samples from the EDX data. The catalytic efficiency of the developed electrode was evaluated by the photoelectrodegradation of methylene blue (MB). The positive potential applied in photoelectrocatalytic (PEC) oxidation was studied. It was found that photoelectrocatalytic (PEC) decomposition of MB solution could be attributed to combination effects between $TiO_2$ photocatalytic and CNT electro-assisted. Through the comparison between photocatalytic (PC) oxidation and photoelectrocatalytic (PEC) oxidation, it was found that the PEC oxidation efficiency for MB is higher than that of PC oxidation.
Instrumental neutron activation analysis was used to measure the concentrations of 27 elements associated with respirable particulate matter (PM10) that were collected from the Third and Fourth Industrial Complex Area of Daejeon City. The distribution patterns of elements were clearly distinguished with their concentrations varying across more than four orders of magnitude. The mean for Al were recorded to be the highest value of 1,527 $ng/m^3$, while that for In showed the lowest value of 0.1 $ng/m^3$. If compared in terms of enrichment factors, it was found that certain elements (e.g., As, Br, Cl, Cr, I, In, Sb, Se, and Zn) are enriched in PM10 samples of the study site. The results of factor analysis indicated six factors with statistical significance, which may exert dominant controls on regulating the elemental concentration levels in the study area.
The synthesis of titanium silicides ($Ti_3Si$, $TiSi_2$, $Ti_5Si_4$, $Ti_5Si_3$ and TiSi) by mechanical alloying has been investigated. Rapid, self-propagating high-temperature synthesis (SHS) reactions were observed to produce the last three phases during room-temperature high-energy ball milling of elemental powders. Such reactions appeared to be ignited by mechanical impact in an intimate, fine powder mixture formed after a critical milling period. During the high-energy ball milling, the repeated impact at contact points leads to a local concentration of energy which may ignite a self-propagating reaction. From in-situ thermal analysis, each critical milling period for the formation of $Ti_5Si_4$, $Ti_5Si_3$ and TiSi was observed to be 22, 35.5 and 53.5 min, respectively. $Ti_3Si$ and $TiSi_2$, however, have not been produced even till the milling period of 360 min due to lack of the homogeneity of the powder mixtures. The formation of titanium silicides by mechanical alloying and the relevant reaction rates appeared to depend upon the critical milling period, the homogeneity of the powder mixtures, and the heat of formation of the products involved.
Copper(II) complex of piperidine dithiocarbamate (Pipdtc) was synthesized from the reaction of Cu(II) and piperidine dithiocarbamate. The possible structure of the complex was proposed on the basis of elemental analysis, molar conductivity, infrared spectroscopy, electronic absorption spectroscopy, and $^{13}C-NMR$ studies. The extraction of copper(II)-Pipdtc complex by carbon tetrachloride can be achieved in the pH range of 6.0~10. The solution of copper(II) with piperidine dithiocarbamate was bey Beer's law in the concentration up to ${\sim}8.0{\times}10^{-5}M$ at pH 9.0.
