  • The sensitivities of eigenvalues to the change of element thickness have been calculated for beams in the paper. For a cantilever beam the sensitivities fluctuate more for higher modes. When the thickness of the element near the fixed end increases, the eigenvalues for all modes increase. On the other hand, increasing of the thickness of the element at the tip decreases the eigenvalues for all modes. For a simply supported beam the sensitivities fluctuate more for higher modes, which is the same phenomenon as for a cantilever beam. The sensitivities are always positive for all modes

  • Mechanical strength of functionally graded composite plates that composed of ceramic, functionally graded material and metal layers is investigated using 3-D finite element method. In FGM layer, material properties are assumed to be varied continuously in the thickness direction according to a simple power law distribution in terms of the volume fraction of a ceramic and metal. The 3-D finite element model is adopted by using an IS-node solid element to analyze more accurately the variation of material properties in the thickness direction. Numerical results are compared with those of the previous works. In addition, the displacements, the tensile stresses and the compressive stresses are analyzed for the variation of FGM thickness ratio and volume fraction distribution.Mechanical strength of functionally graded composite plates that composed of ceramic, functionally graded material and metal layers is investigated using 3-D finite element method. • Most of wall or plate structures subjected to nonuniform earth or water pressure has variable thickness. These problems were generally solved by models with uniform thickness and pressure. To obtain more accurate and economic solution for this type of problem. efficient isoparametric plate element considering variable thickness and nonuniform pressure were developed. Some example problems demonstrated efficiency of the proposed element.

  • Ship Blocks are assembled by welding, and among them, welding between large blocks (Pre-erection stage) is used as feature of butt. In this process, local material has a experience of thermal cycle and become finally shrunk. As for inconsistency of shrunk weldments and adjacent regions, ship structure would be deformed locally and globally. Thermal distortion analyses are done for control of these processes, and methodologies capable of ship block size among them are using 2-D shell element in FEM. A shell element takes charge of plate, so it has its thickness which is important for angular distortion by welding. By the way, a butt-welding consists normally of several passes, and weldment thickness are different at each pass. If a calculated final one-time welding shrinkage is acting on the shell element whose thickness is same as it of plate, then deformation value must be underestimated. This research developed a methodology that total deformation after multi-pass welding can be analyzed by one time at shell element having original thickness of its plate. We use the SDB thermal distortion analysis method and verified by several experiment. The both experimental and analysis results showed good agreements.

  • In this study, a new refinement technique for 3-dimensional hexahedral element mesh is proposed, which is aimed at the control of mesh density. With the proposed scheme the mesh is refined adaptively to the elemental error which is estimated by 'a posteriori' error estimator based on the energy norm. A desired accuracy of an analysis i.e. a limit of error defines the new desired mesh density map on the current mesh. To obtain the desired mesh density, the refinement procedure is repeated iteratively until no more elements to be refined exist. In the algorithm, at first the regions of mesh to be refined are defined and, then, the zero-thickness element layers are inserted into the interfaces between the regions. All the meshes in the regions, in which the zero-thickness layers are inserted, are to be regularized in order to improve the shape of the slender elements on the interfaces. This algorithm is tested on a simple shape of 2-d quadrilateral element mesh and 3-d hexahedral element mesh. A numerical example of elastic deformation of a plate with a hole shows the effectiveness of the proposed refinement scheme.

  • This study aims to analyze the S. I. F. K value upon Mode I cracks in a finite-width plate of varying thickness, which is expressed in terms of width ratio ($\omega$), thickness ratio ($\beta$) and non-dimensional crack length (λ) by using the 2-dimensional finite element method. Then, by comparing the effectiveness of the results obtained by the two finite element methods, it is seen that the 2-dimensional finite element method can be used in order to analyse the S. I. F. K values upon a various thickness model. A model is developed in order to analyze the effects of initial residual stress upon the fatigue crack growth behavior in various thickness welded specimens. In this model, crack growth rate da/dN appears to be come small as the thickness ratio with the same ΔK is increased. Also, in the initial step, as ΔK is increased with crack growth rate is decreased and then increased because the repeated compressive residual stress retards crack growth rate.

  • This paper presents the thickness effect of hysteresis ring of hysteresis motor using finite element method combined with a vector hysteresis model. From the magnitude and direction of the magnetic field intensity, the magnetization of each ring element is calculated by a vector hysteresis model. The developed torque can be obtained with the vector sum of individual torque of each element on the hysteresis ring. From these calculations, it can be found that the motor torque is not in proportion to the thickness of the ring. As a result, there exists a proper point of thickness and that can be determined using the proposed methoㅇ in this paper.

  • This paper presents a new algorithm that can refine hexahedral elements while maintaining the appropriate connectivity. In the algorithm, at first the regions of mesh to be refined are defined and, then, the zero-thickness element layers inserted into the interfaces between the regions. All the meshes in the regions, in which the zero-thickness layers are inserted, are to be regularized in order to improve the shape of the slender elements on the interfaces. This algorithm is applied to the analysis of plastic deformation process. The results show that the refined mesh gives smaller relative errors than the original mesh.

  • This paper presents the thermal behaviours of a solid type disk brake for a high-speed train. The thermal behaviours of a brake disk with 50mm thickness shows good performance compared with 45mm thickness of a disk because of a high specific heat capacity. The FEM results show that the thickness of the disk with a same weight of the brake disk should be increased for a good flexibility of the contact thermal problems. Therefore, the ratio between the pad and disk in diameter may be reduced and the thickness of a disk increased.

  • Laser welded blanks are finding increased usage in many industrial applications, which are made of different sheet thickness or different material strengths joined together. In this study the heat flow problem in laser welding of the different steel sheet thickness was solved by using a finite element method, and a series of experiments wers carried out to confirm the validity of the numerical method.
