  • We present a new post-fabrication frequency tuning method for laterally driven electrostatic microresonators using a DC-biased electrostatic comb array of linearly varied finger-length. The electrostatic tuning force and the equivalent stiffness, adjusted by the DC-biased tuning-comb array, have been formulated as functions of geometry and DC tuning voltage. A set of frequency-turnable microresonators has been designed and fabricated by 4-mask surface-micromachining process. The resonant frequency of the microfabricated microresonator has been measured for a varying tuning voltage at the reduced pressure of 1 torr. The maximum 3.3% reduction of the resonant frequency is achieved at the tuning voltage increase of 20V.

  • The miniaturization of an electrostatic precipitator has become a key element in successfully constructing an efficient electrostatic precipitator because of the limited space allowed for installation in a subway tunnel. Therefore, the miniaturization of the rapping system of the electrostatic precipitator has also become important. This research proposes a resonant-type electromagnetic vibration exciter as a vibrating rapper for an electrostatic precipitator. The compact vibrating rapper removes collected dust from the collecting plates without direct impact on those collecting plates. To characterize the dynamic performance of the electromagnetic vibration exciter, finite element analysis was performed using a commercial electromagnetic analysis program, MAXEWLL. Moreover, we analyzed the resonant frequency of an electrostatic precipitator, to which the electromagnetic vibration exciter was applied, by ANSYS. Also, to measure the acceleration generated by the electromagnetic vibration exciter, we manufactured a prototype of the ESP and electromagnetic vibration exciter and measured its acceleration at the resonant frequency.

  • An eigenvalue analysis of a tunable micro-mechanical actuator is presented. The actuator is modeled as a continuum structure. The eigenvalue modified by the tuning voltage is computed through the linearization of the relation between the electrostatic force and the displacement at the equilibrium. A staggered algorithm is employed to perform the coupled analysis of the electrostatic and elastic fields. The stiffness matrix of the actuator is modified at this equilibrium state. The displacement field is perturbed using an eigenmode profile of the actuator. The configuration change of the actuator due to perturbation modifies the electrostatic field and thus the electrostatic force. The equivalent stiffness matrix corresponding to the perturbation and the change in the electrostatic force is then added to stiffness matrix in order to explain natural frequency shifting. The numerical examples are presented and compared with the experiments in the literatures.

  • In this study, the temperature characteristics of electrostatic capacity and dielectric loss for the sample of Teflon film which is degradated at the $120^{\circ}C{\sim}200^{\circ}C$ temperature range in the oven for 10 hours has been measured in through the applied frequency range of 0.1 kHz~4,800 kHz at temperature of $50^{\circ}C$, $90^{\circ}C$, $130^{\circ}C$, $170^{\circ}C$. Also, in the same conditions, the frequency characteristics of electrostatic capacity and dielectric loss for the sample of Teflon film has been measured in through the applied temperature range of $30^{\circ}C{\sim}70^{\circ}C$ on setting frequency of 0.1 kHz, 1 kHz, 10 kHz, 100 kHz. The results of this study are as follows. When the frequency range of 0.1 kHz~4,800 kHz applied to the sample of Teflon film, the electrostatic capacity has been measured at the temperature of $50^{\circ}C$, $90^{\circ}C$, $130^{\circ}C$, $170^{\circ}C$. Through this measurement, it found that the electrostatic capacity decreased with increasing temperature. Regarding this result, may be it is because the electromagnetic coupling is degraded by thermal degradation. When the sample of Teflon film heated at $280^{\circ}C$ for 10 hours in oven, the dielectric loss has changed from unstable status to stabilizing status with increasing the degradation temperature in the $120^{\circ}C$, $160^{\circ}C$, $200^{\circ}C$ range. In this measurement, the two spectrums of dielectric loss appeared. It considers that this spectrum of dielectric loss appeared in 300 Hz is caused by the molecular motion of the C-F or OH group. Through this study, It found that the electrostatic capacity decreased with increasing frequency and temperature, and there is no change in dielectric loss, although the frequency increases.

  • In this study, the properties of C-V degradation for thermal conductivity silicone rubber sample which is attached by copper-copper, copper-aluminum, aluminum-aluminum on upper-side and under-side has been measured at temperature of $80^{\circ}C{\sim}140^{\circ}C$. The results of this study are as follows. In case the frequency is increased, it found that the electrostatic capacity increased with increasing temperature to $80^{\circ}C$, $110^{\circ}C$, $140^{\circ}C$ regardless of kind of electrode. It found that the electrostatic capacity increased with becoming high temperature range of frequency regardless of kind of electrode. This result is considered to be caused by thermal absorption on the thermal conductivity silicone rubber sample. It found that the electrostatic capacity decreased with increasing temperature and frequency. This result is considered to be caused by molecular motion of C-F radical or OH radical.

  • In this study, the frequency properties of electrostatic capacity and dielectric loss for the samples with different types of filler has been measured in through the applied frequency range of 7 kHz ~3,000 kHz at temperature of $80^{\circ}C$, $110^{\circ}C$, $140^{\circ}C$, $170^{\circ}C$. The results of this study are as follows. When the sample is degradated at the temperature of $80^{\circ}C$, $110^{\circ}C$, $140^{\circ}C$, $170^{\circ}C$ and the frequency range of 7 kHz ~3,000 kHz is applied, It found that the electrostatic capacity of the sample with Polyimide film is larger than the sample with Grass fiber. It found that the dielectric loss for the sample with Polyimide film is larger than the sample with Grass fiber with increasing frequency and temperature in the $80^{\circ}C$, $110^{\circ}C$, $140^{\circ}C$, $170^{\circ}C$ range. Also, the dielectric loss decreased with increasing frequency. In case of the sample with Polyimide film, It found that the electrostatic capacity decreased with increasing temperature, and the dielectric loss gradually decreased with increasing frequency.

  • As a preliminary step toward the development of a multipurpose electrostatic separator for agricultural use, this study investigated the effect of moisture level, geometrical characteristics and the electric field strength of a charging device on the electrostatic charging of brown rice, unhulled paddy, small stones and broken rice that are produced during the milling process. The results are summarized as follows. 1. Average electrostatic charge per unit mass of paddy is greater than that of brown rice. 2. Charge per unit mass of rice kernel increases linearly with moisture content and electric field strength of the charging device, presenting no correlations with length or thickness of rice kernel. 3. Frequency distributions in electrostatic charge per unit mass of paddy and brown rice kernels indicated that the portion, not overlapped, ranged from 10 to 29% with Japonica rice and from 32 to 49% with Indica rice. 4. The difference in moisture content between paddy and brown rice must be over 6%, if they are to be electrostatically separated to over 95%. 5. Theoretical portions of brown rice to be separated from a mixture primarily by the electrostatic charge and secondarily by the length or by the thickness were 95~100% and 27~76%, respectively. 6. Frequency distribution of electrostatic charge for broken kernels overlapped that of paddy and brown rice, which the small stones didn't.

  • Capacitive position sensing with modulation technique is widely used in electrostatic actuator applications. To maximize the electrostatic force and the position-sensing gain, capacitors for driving and capacitors for sensing are shared, i.e, after applying the driving voltage with high-frequency modulating signals using op amps, the position is demodulated from the modulated signal. In high-voltage applications, however, low bandwidth of a high-voltage op amp hinders adding the high-frequency modulating signal to the driving voltage. In this paper, new and very simple driving and sensing method is proposed, in which the pulse-width modulated driving voltage eliminates the need of the high-frequency modulating signal for position sensing. This new algorithm is proved by the simulation results using Matlab/SIMULINK.
