  • The rigid gas permeable(RGP) contact lens has nearly side effect on the cornea. So that, this lens has used the clinical reflective correction of the eye. This study have used several methods for research the fine internal structure on the RGP contact lens by scanning electron microscopy. The results have indicated that the postfixation of 1% $OsO_4$ and tannic acid is responsible for a fine structure in the internal plane of RGP contact lens. These internal surface of contact lens appeared the several shape of the hole of the stereo shape form with arrangement of round form. But, on the contact lens with non-postfixation, the stereo shape have not present and the boundary of the vesicle have not clear. Maybe, these results suggest that the fixation methods have effect on the morphological characters of materials on the RGP contact lens.

  • Embryonic and postembryonic chicken lenses have been analyzed morphologically to investigate the differentiation of the lens fibers by light and electron microscopes. Morphogenesis of the chick lens was initiated as lens epithelial cells were proliferated and proceeded to elongate the cells characteristically at posterior side, by which the disintegrations of nuclei were accompanied during the early developmental stages. Primary and secondary lens fibers were identified at the late developmental stages, while interconnections between neigh-boring cells well developed and denucleation commenced. On day of hatching, the chicken lens fibers contained few cell organelles within the cytoplasm and showed the homogeneity of cytoplasmic appearance. On day 10 of hatching, the lens were fully differentiated; fiber cells, in which most cell organelles except polysomes were disappeared, showed a slender and elongated prismatic shape. At that stage gap junctions were particularly developed or cytoplasmic ridges are closely interlocked between adjoining cells. In conclusion, differentiation of chick lens involves the division of epithelial cells, the elongation into fiber cells, the loss of cell organelles and the increase of gap junction.

  • The effects of grapefruit seed extract and $H_2O_2$ disinfectants on Pseudomonas aeruginosa were investigated by antimicrobial assay and scanning electron microscopy. Pseudomonas aeruginosa is a Gram negative bacteria and a common causative microorganism of bacterial keratitis. After incubation of soft contact lens in Pseudomonas aeruginosa suspension for 120 minutes containing the disinfectants, the grapefruit seed extract showed antimicrobial activity as good as the chemical disinfectant. The living rates of Pseudomonas aeruginosa in grapefruit seed extract and $H_2O_2$ disinfectants were $1{\times10^3CFU/m{\ell}$ and $0.5{\times}10^3CFU/m{\ell}$, respectively showing no major difference in the killing activity. However, the mechanisms of the antimicrobial activity were quite different as indicated by scanning electron microscopy of the bacterial surface morphology. Considering chemically or other toxins induced keratitis, the natural disinfectant isolated from grapefruit seed extract shows promising results as a soft contact lens disinfectant.

  • A FOV (field-of-view) of the HV-MSC (high voltage multi-scan CCD, $1024{\times}1024$ pixels) camera mounted in the post-column HV-GIF (high voltage gatan image filter) has been drastically enlarged by the projection lens current adjustment. An imaging area of the HV-MSC camera obtained at the lowest magnification (2,000x) is $112{\mu}m^2$ which corresponds to the recording area of the film at the magnification of 8,800x, while the achievable recording area is only $0.43{\mu}m^2$ at the same magnification without this technique. Ignoring the image distortion of less than 5%, we have designed an on-site reference graph to estimate projection lens currents for microscope magnifications above 8,800x, where the recording area on the HVMSC is same as that on the film.

  • In this paper, we present the fabrication of a high-quality diffractive-lens mold having submicron patterns, which is suitable for an ultra-slim optical system. In order to fabricate high-quality diffractive lens with a variety of submicron patterns, the multi-alignment method was used; high-resolution electron-beam lithography and FAB plasma etching were carried out to obtain the patterns. The most important key technology in the multi-alignment method is to reduce alignment error, lithography error, and etching error. In this paper, these major fabrication errors were minimized, and a high-quality diffractive lens with a diameter of $267\;{\mu}m$ (NA = 0.25), minimum pattern width of 226 nm, and thickness of 819 nm was successfully fabricated.

  • The self-assembled strain-induced sub-micrometric islands and nanostructures are grown from In-As-Sb-P quaternary liquid phase on InAs (100) substrates in Stranski-Krastanow growth mode. Two samples are under consideration. The first sample consists of unencapsulated islands and lens-shape quantum dots (QDs) grown from expressly inhomogeneous liquid phase. The second sample is an n-InAs/p-InAsSbP heterostructure with QDs embedded in the p-n junction interface. The morphology, size and shape of the structures are investigated by high-resolution scanning electron (SEM) and transmission electron (TEM) microscopy. It is shown that islands, as they decrease in size, undergo shape transitions. Particularly, as the volume decreases, the following succession of shape transitions are detected: sub-micrometric truncated pyramid, {111} facetted pyramid, {111} and partially {105} facetted pyramid, completely unfacetted "pre-pyramid", hemisphere, lens-shaped QD, which then evolves again to nano-pyramid. A critical size of $5{\pm}2nm$ for the shape transformation of InAsSbP-based lens-shaped QD to nano-pyramid is experimentally measured and theoretically evaluated.

  • The electric part of thermal SEM(Scanning Electron Microscopy) consists of high voltage generation, lens control, and image processing. Several methodologies for enhancing SEM image are addressed and those results are verified through analyses and experiments. The controller employes a DSP(Digital Signal Processing), making the system more flexible and convenient than the classical analogue based controller. In some parts based the analog circuit, there are inevitable sources of noise and image distortion. The experimental investigation is provided along with analytical proof to enhance the SEM image.
