  • In this paper, we present a stable solution of the transient electromagnetic scattering from the conducting objects. This method does not utilize the conventional marching-on in time (MOT) solution. Instead we solve the time domain integral equation by expressing the transient behavior of the induced current in terms of weighted Laguerre polynomials. By using this basis functions for the temporal variation, the time derivative in the integral equation can be handled analytically. Since these temporal basis functions converge to zero as time progresses, the transient response of the induced current does not have a late time oscillation. To show the validity of the proposed method, we solve a time domain electric feld integral equation and compare the results of MOT, Mie solution, and the inverse discrete Fourier transform (IDFT) of the solution obtained in the frequency domain.

  • A laterally driven electromagnetic microactuator (LaDEM) is presented, and a micro-optical switch is designed and fabricated as a possible application. LaDEM provides parallel actuation of the microactuator to the silicon substrate surface (in-plane mode) by the Lorentz force. Poly-silicon-on-insulator (Poly-SOI) wafers and a reactive ion etching (RIE) process were used to fabricate high-aspect-ratio vertical microstructures, which allowed the equipment of a vertical micro mirror. A fabricated arch-shaped leaf spring has a thickness of $1.8{\mu}m$, width of $16{\mu}m$, and length of $800{\mu}m$. The resistance of the fabricated structure fer the optical switch was approximately 5$\Omega$. The deflection of the leaf springs increases linearly up to about 400 mA and then it demonstrates a buckling behavior around the current value. Owing to this nonlinear phenomenon, a large displacement of $60{\mu}m$ could be measured at 566 mA. The displacement-load relation and some dynamic characteristics are analyzed using the finite element simulations.

  • The oxidation of $Fe_{73}Si_{16}B_7Nb_3Cu_1$ nanocrystalline powder has been conducted to investigate its influence on the electromagnetic wave absorption characteristics of the soft magnetic material. Oxidation occurred primarily on the surface of nanocrystals. Oxidation reduced the real part of complex permeability due to the reduction of the relative volume of the powder, which otherwise contributes to the permeability. Oxidation reduced the absorption efficiency of the sheet at frequencies over 1GHz, indicating that the relative contribution of skin depth increments to the absorption was not significant. The pulverization and milling process lowered the optimum crystallization temperature of the material by $40{\sim}50^{\circ}C$ because of the internal energy accumulated during the fragmentation and powder thinning processes.

  • we analyzed the electromagnetic behavior of a superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL) under the quench state using FEM. The analysis model used in this work is 5.5 KVA meander-line type SFCLs. Meshes of 3,650 triangular elements were used in the analysis of this SFCL. Analysis results showed that the distribution of current density was concentrated to inner curved line in meander-line type-SFCL and the maximum current density was 14.61 $A/m^2$ and also the maximum Joule heat was 2,030 $W/m^2$ in this region. We think that the new and the modified structure must be considered for an uniform distribution of the electromagnetic field.

  • In recent society, the quality of human life has improved due to the use of electric appliances and the high powered electrical equipments. However, lots of electric appliances and equipments generate the electromagnetic field hazard. Many studies have been made about the wrong behavior of machines due to electromagnetic fields, the interferences in communication equipments, the possibility of the electromagnetic field hazard in human body, etc. There exist international standards about the RF equipments (ex. mobile phone, antenna, etc.). But, many researchers involved in power frequency electric and magnetic field only propose the prudential avoidance. In this paper, induced currents in a human body model due to magnetic fields in high speed railway are calculated by two dimensional impedance method. Power frequency(60Hz) magnetic fields are calculated and induced currents are simulated by Faraday's law. Induced currents are simulated with induced voltage, human body model impedances due to Ohm's law, magnetic fields derived from Biot-Savart's law and Transmission Line Method in high speed railway.

  • Over the past decades, a great variety of dampers have been developed and applied to mechanical, aerospace, and civil structures to control structural vibrations. This study is focused on two emerging damper types, namely, eddy current dampers (ECDs) and electromagnetic damper (EMDs), both of which are regarded as promising alternatives to commonly-applied viscous fluid dampers (VFDs) because of their similar mechanical behavior. This study aims to enhance the damping densities of ECDs and EMDs, which are typically lower than those of VFDs, by proposing new designs with multiple improvement measures. The design configurations, mechanisms, and experimental results of the new ECDs and EMDs are presented in this paper. The further comparison based on the experimental results revealed that the damping densities of the proposed ECD and EMD designs are comparable to those of market-available VFDs. Considering ECDs and EMDs are solid-state dampers without fluid leakage problems, the results obtained in this study demonstrate a great prospect of replacing conventional VFDs with the improved ECDs and EMDs in future large-scale applications.

  • Microwaves belong to the portion of the electromagnetic spectrum with frequencies between 300MHz and 300GHz.$\^$1)/ In microwave processing, the energy is delivered directly to materials through molecular interaction with the electromagnetic field. This result in rapid heating throughout the material thickness with the reduced thermal gradients. If microwave is applied to fibrous materials, it can be reduced processing time. (omitted)

  • A computational investigation of the effect of the electromagnetic force(or Lorentz force) on the flow behavior around a circular cylinder, a typical model of bluff bodies, is conducted. Two-dimensional unsteady flow computation for $Re=10^2$ is carried out using a numerical method of finite difference approximation in a curvilinear body-fitted coordinate system by solving the momentum equations including the Lorentz force as a body force. The effect of the spatial variations of the Lorentz forcing region and forcing direction along the cylinder circumference is investigated. The numerical results show that the Lorentz force can effectively suppress the flow separation and oscillation of the lift force of the circular cylinder cross-flow, leading to the reduction of the drag.

  • The multiple-ridged circular waveguides is analyzed using Fourier series and the mode matching technique. The enforcement of the boundary conditions yields the simultaneous equations for the field coefficient inside the waveguides. The simultaneous equations are solved to represent a dispersion relation in an analytic series form. The numerical computation is performed to illustrate the behavior of the cutoff wavenumbers in terms of number, length and angle of ridges. The presented series solution is exact and rapidly-convergent so that it is efficient for numerical computation. A simple dispersion relation based on the dominant mode analysis is obtained and is shown to be very accurate for most practical applications.

  • PCB Power-Bus (comprising power/ground planes) impedance and fields are evaluated by an efficient series expansion method that is suggested in this paper. It is used to investigate the structure's radiated emission(RE) levels and find acceptable ways of loading the power/ground planes such as decoupling capcitor(DeCap)s, balanced feeding and slits, in order to reduce the interferences. Also, the calculations and measurements of a proposed geometry are verified by vector fitting as a analysis model to check the behavior of the slit.
