  • Electromagnetic (EM) waves used to send signals under seawater are normally restricted to low frequencies (f) because of sudden exponential increases of attenuation (𝛼) at higher f. The mathematics of EM wave propagation in seawater demonstrate dependence on relative permeability (𝜇r), relative permittivity (𝜀r), conductivity (𝜎), and f of transmission. Estimation of 𝜀r and 𝜎 based on the W. Ellison interpolation model was performed for averaged real-time data of temperature (T) and salinity (S) from 1955 to 2012 for all oceans with 41 088 latitude/longitude points and 101 depth points up to 5500 m. Estimation of parameters such as real and imaginary parts of 𝜀r, 𝜀r', 𝜀r", 𝜎, loss tangent (tan 𝛿), propagation velocity (Vp), phase constant (𝛽), and α contributes to absorption loss (La) for seawater channels carried out by using normal distribution fit in the 3 GHz-40 GHz f range. We also estimated total path loss (LPL) in seawater for given transmission power Pt and antenna (dipole) gain. MATLAB is the simulation tool used for analysis.

  • Interaocular pressure (IOP) sensor and external coil to detect the resonance frequency of the IOP sensor are designed and implemented using MEMS technology. The IOP sensor is designed using 3-D electromagnetic (EM) simulation. The resonance frequency of IOP sensor needs to be lower than that of the external coil. Additionally, the resonance frequency of the IOP sensor needs to be located near the resonance frequency of the coil to get the sufficient amplitude of phase variation. The frequency where the phase peak appears must be constant according to the distance between the IOP sensor and the external coil. From the measurement results, we demonstrated that the designed IOP sensor has the same resonance frequency with various distances between the IOP sensor and the coil.

  • This paper describes a CPW oscillator using a spiral resonator. Spiral resonators are very useful in design CPW oscillators since they show a relatively higher Q than CPW hairpin and helical resonators. Prior to the design of oscillators, three CPW resonators are designed and compared. Electromagnetic (EM) simulation are performed for an improved design in design the CPW resonators and oscillators. Three oscillators are designed at 5.7 GHz using the mentioned CPW resonators. The measured output power of three CPW oscillators using the helical, hairpin, and spiral resonators are 2.55 dBm, 2.64 dBm, and 4.98 dBm, respectively. In addition, the size of three resonators are $102.15mm^2,\;130.05mm^2,\;80.625mm^2$, respectively, so it is proven that the proposed CPW oscillator using the spiral resonator has a smaller size than the others.

  • Despite its flexibility to complex geometry, three-dimensional (3D) electromagnetic(EM) modeling schemes using finite element method (FEM) have been faced to practical limitation due to the resulting large system of equations to be solved. An efficient 3D FEM modeling scheme has been developed, which can adopt either direct or iterative solver depending on the problems. The direct solver PARDISO can reduce the computing time remarkably by incorporating parallel computing on multi-core processor systems, which is appropriate for single frequency multi-source configurations. When limited memory, the iterative solver BiCGSTAB(1) can provide fast and stable convergence. Efficient 3D simulations can be performed by choosing an optimum solver depending on the computing environment and the problems to be solved. This modeling includes various types of controlled-sources and can be exploited as an efficient engine for 3D inversion.

  • In this paper, we introduce the concept of ILCTL(inductively loaded compact transmission line) that is new type of compact transmission line. ILCTL was realized by periodic narrow transverse slits working as series inductances in microstrip line. And compact hybrid rat-race couplers were designed by using the proposed ILCTL. The microstrip line hybrid rat-race coupler with silts of 8 per quarter wavelength at 1.8 GHz has reduced size of 60% as compared with conventional one and it is proved by simulation of EM solver with full-wave analysis based on MoM and measurements.

  • We have measured resistivities for undisturbed soil samples collected from dredged bank with sea sand, and analyzed with one-dimensional inversion results from small-loop electromagnetic survey data. From the relationship between the two resistivities, it appeared that calculated resistivities were remarkably consistent with measured resistivities. Correlation relationships between resistivity values and cone resistance were analyzed after comparing inversion results with cone resistance. It turns out that the region with below 1 ohm-m is correspondent to that of with less than $50\;kgf/cm^2$ in dredged bank with sea sand. From the study result, resistivity monitoring of small-loop EM periodically is proved to be more effective to maintain the stability of embankment dike.

  • On August 17th 2017, for the first time in the history, the gravitational wave (GW) detectors recorded signals coming from the merger of two neutron stars. This event was named as GW170817, and more interestingly, gamma-ray emission was detected 2 seconds after the gravitational wave signal, and 11 hours later, telescopes in Chile identified that the GW signal came from the NGC 4993 galaxy at the distance of about 40 Mpc. This is again the first time that electromagnetic (EM) signals are detected for a GW source. The follow-up observations by astronomers all around the world, including our group in Korea, successfully identified the optical emission as the kilonova, the elusive optical/NIR counterpart that has been proposed to originate from a neutron star merger. This whole event started the new era of astronomy, so-called the "multi-messenger astronomy", where the combined information from GW and EM radiation reveals an unprecedented view of the universe. In this talk, I summarize this exciting event, and describe the efforts by Korean astronomers that have led to important discoveries about the kilonova and the host galaxy properties, and finally provide the future prospects.

  • In this paper, the optimal placement of the rotary wing's communication and navigation antennas was evaluated by measuring their performance through ground simulations and flight tests. To select the mounting position of the communication and navigation antenna on the helicopter, after considering the shape and characteristics of the airframe, the radiation patterns, coupling analysis, equipment operation profiles, and antenna type analysis were performed for the aircraft-mounted antenna. Based on the analysis results, a procedure for sequentially performing voltage standing wave ratio (VSWR) measurement and antenna pattern test was established through ground and flight tests of the antenna. The systematic performance measurement method and procedure proposed in this paper were verified through ground and flight tests of the Light Armed Helicopter (LAH) system.

  • In this paper, a design and fabrication of a miniaturized 2.5 GHz 8 W power amplifier using selectively anodized aluminum oxide(SAAO) substrate are presented. The process of SAAO substrate is recently proposed and patented by Wavenics Inc. which uses aluminum as wafer. The selected active device is a commercially available GaN HEMT chip of TriQuint company, which is recently released. The optimum impedances for power amplifier design were extracted using the custom tuning jig composed of tunable passive components. The class-F power amplifier are designed based on EM co-simulation of impedance matching circuit. The matching circuit is realized in SAAO substrate. For integration and matching in the small package module, spiral inductors and single layer capacitors are used. The fabricated power amplifier with $4.4{\times}4.4\;mm^2$ shows the efficiency above 40 % and harmonic suppression above 30 dBc for the second(2nd) and the third(3rd) harmonic at the output power of 8 W.

  • A method of calculation fur propagating and focusing of focused beams generated in antenna arrays, using BPM(Beam Propagation Method), is presented in this paper. Based on the diffraction theory, the beam focusing and Propagation is studied specially for the case of the antenna way fed by the Rotman lens that is able to focus microwave power on its focal arc or generate multiple beams. There are difficulties in performing a full-wave simulation using a commercial EM simulation tool for propagating and focusing of beams because of the structural complexity and the feeding assignment of the antenna array. Therefore, as an alternative solution, the BPM is presented to calculate the beam propagation from the aperture-type antennas. From the point of view of optics, the propagations of the lens have been simplified from the Fresnel diffraction integral to the Fourier transform. Using Fourier Transform, a beam propagation method is developed to show improvement of the resolution by controlling the wavefront of wave Propagating from an aperture-type antenna array. The beam width(or spot size) and the intensity are calculated for a focused beam propagating from an array having $10\lambda$ of its size. For the beams with $20\lambda,\;30\lambda$, and $50\lambda$ of geometrical focal length, the half-power beam widths(or spot size) are about 1.1\lambda,\;1.3\lambda,\;and\;1.9\lambda$ respectively.
