  • Silicon capacitive pressure sensor has been fabricated by using electrochemical etching stop and silicon-to-glass electrostatic bonding technique. A diaphragm structure is designed to compensate the nonlinear response. A cavity is etched into the silicon to the depth of 2$\mu\textrm{m}$ by anisotropic etching in 20wt.% TMAH solution at 80$^{\circ}C$. A fabricated sensor showed 3.3 pF zero-pressure capacitance, 297 pp.m/mmHg sensitivity, and a 7.4 7%F.S. nonlinear response in a 0-1 kgf/cm$^2$pressure range.

  • In this study, we manufactured the anodized alumina oxide (AAO) template and fabricated the carbon nanofibers and manganese oxide nanofibers using AAO template for application to electrochemical capacitor. Pore diameters of the AAO template were increased from 50 to 90 nm by increasing the acid treatment time after two-step anodizing process. Furthermore nanofibers, which is fabricated by AAO template, showed uniform diameter and micro structure. It is suggested that the surface area is larger than commercial electrode material and it is enhancing the energy density by increasing the specific capacitance.

  • Electrochemical oxidation of silicon (p-type Si(100)) at room temperature in ethylene glycol and in aqueous solutions has been performed by applying constant low current densities for the preparation of thin SiO2 layers. In-situ ac impedance spectroscopic methods have been employed to characterize the interfaces of electrolyte/oxide/semiconductor and to estimate the thickness of the oxide layer. The thicknesses of SiO2 layers calculated from the capacitive impedance were in the range of 25-100Å depending on the experimental conditions. The anodic polarization resistance parallel with the oxide layer capacitance increased continuously to a very large value in ethylene glycol solution. However, it decreased above 4 V in aqueous solutions, where oxygen evolved through the oxidation of water. Interstitially dissolved oxygen molecules in SiO2 layer at above the oxygen evolution potential were expected to facilitate the formation of SiO2 at the interfaces. Thin SiO2 films grew efficiently at a controlled rate during the application of low anodization currents in aqueous solutions.

  • The durability and reliability of thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) play an important role in the service reliability, availability and maintainability (RAM) of hotsection components in advanced turbine engines for aero and utility applications. Photostimulated luminescence spectroscopy (PSLS) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) are being concurrently developed as complimentary nondestructive evaluation (NDE) techniques for quality control and liferemain assessment of TBCs. This paper overviews the governing principles and applications of the luminescence and the impedance examined in the light of residual stress, phase constituents and resistance (or capacitance) in TBC constituents including the thermally grown oxide (TGO) scale. Results from NDE by PSLS and EIS are discussed and related to the microstructural development during high temperature thermal cycling, examined by using a variety of microscopic techniques including focused ion beam (FIB) insitu liftout (INLO), transmission and scanning transmission electron microscopy (TEM and STEM).

  • Nitrogen-doped microporous carbons were prepared using a polyvinylidene fluoride/melamine mixture. The electrochemical performance of the nitrogen-doped microporous carbons after being subjected to different carbonization conditions was investigated. The nitrogen to carbon ratio and specific surface area decreased with an increase in the carbonization temperature. However, the maximum specific capacitance of 208 F/g was obtained at a carbonization temperature of $800^{\circ}C$ because it produced the highest microporosity.

  • The excellent and characteristic capacitor performance of pure single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs), which differ from conventional activated carbon electrodes, is reported. SWNTs with little bundling showed higher specific capacitance than activated carbons. High operating voltage can be expected for pure SWNTs without metal contamination and graphene edge structure.

  • Heteroatom phosphorous-doped graphene aerogel (PGA) with high surface area is successfully synthesized via hydrothermal method for high power and energy supercapacitors, including the advantage of three dimensional internetwork and constitutive graphene skeletons. The morphology of PGA was investigated by the scanning electron microscope, transmission electron microscope. The chemical structure and circumstances were confirmed by Raman and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, the phosphorus is successfully incorporated with the graphene sheets. As evidenced by electrochemical measurements, cyclic voltammetry and galvanostatic charge discharge, the hierarchically PGA has an unprecedented high capacitance, which contributes to the excellent high-rate performance of this material for supercapacitor application.

  • Several methods for improving dispersion of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have been investigated. CNTs modified by acids and hydrogen peroxide ($H_2O_2$) showed improved dispersion. From SEM micrographs and photos of dispersion, CNTs modified with nitric acid and $H_2O_2$, showed no agglomeration in solution even standing for 4 months, which means successfully improved dispersion property. TEM micrographs of surface modified single CNT treated with 69% $HNO_3$ in boiling acid solution as the optimum method were obtained. For confirmation of CNTs' application to EDLC electrode materials, characteristics of EDLC have been analyzed by cyclic voltammetry curve, specific capacitance of unit cell, electrode discharge curves and AC impedance curve. From the results, it could be confirmed that electrochemical properties of CNTs were enhanced after surface modification with 69% $HNO_3$ acid treatment.

  • Poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) coated Manganese Dioxide (PEDOT/$MnO_2$) composite electrode was fabricated by simply immersing the $MnO_2$ electrode in an acidic aqueous solution containing 3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene (EDOT) monomers. Analysis of open-circuit potential of the $MnO_2$ electrode in the solution indicates the reduction of outer surface of $MnO_2$ to dissolved $Mn^{2+}$ ions and simultaneously oxidation of EDOT monomer to PEDOT on the $MnO_2$ surface to form a PEDOT shell via a galvanic displacement reaction. Analysis of cyclic voltammograms and specific capacitance of the PEDOT/$MnO_2$, conductive carbon added $MnO_2$ and conductive carbon added PEDOT/$MnO_2$ electrodes suggests that the conductive carbon acted mainly to provide a continuous conducting path in the electrode to improve the rate capability and the PEDOT layer on $MnO_2$ acts to increase the active reaction site of $MnO_2$.

  • In this report, polyoxometalte (POM)-doped polypyrrole (Ppy) was deposited on surface of three-dimensional carbon cloth (CC) using an electrodeposition method and its pseudocapacitive behavior was investigated using cyclic voltammetry and galvanostatic charge-discharge. The POM-Ppy coating was thin and conformal which can be controlled by electrodeposition time. As-prepared POM-Ppy/CC was characterized using scanning electron microscope and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. The unique 3D nanocomposite structure of POM-Ppy/CC was capable of delivering excellent charge storage performances: a high areal capacitance ($561mF/cm^2$), a high rate capability (85%), and a good cycling performance (97% retention).
