Effect of Alloying Elements (Cu, Al, Si) on the Electrochemical Corrosion Behaviors of TWIP Steel in a 3.5 % NaCl Solution (3.5% NaCl 수용액 내 TWIP강의 부식거동에 미치는 합금원소 (Cu, Al, Si)의 영향)

  • The corrosion behaviors of twinning-induced plasticity (TWIP) steels with different alloying elements (Cu, Al, Si) in a neutral aqueous environment were investigated in terms of the characteristics of the corrosion products formed on the steel surface. The corrosion behavior was evaluated by measuring potentiodynamic polarization test and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. For compositional analysis of the corrosion products formed on the steel surface, an electron probe x-ray micro analyzer was also utilized. This study showed that the addition of Cu to the steel contributed to the increase in corrosion resistance to a certain extent by the presence of metallic Cu in discontinuous form at the oxide/steel interface. Compared to the case of steel with Cu, the Al-bearing specimen exhibited much higher polarization resistance and lower corrosion current by the formation of a thin Al-enriched oxide layer. On the other hand, Si addition (3.0 wt%) to the steel led to an increase in grain size, which was twice as large as that of the other specimens, resulting in a deterioration of the corrosion resistance. This was closely associated with the localized corrosion attacks along the grain boundaries by the formation of a galvanic couple with a large cathode-small anode.

  • In this report, $MnO_2$ nanoparticle-deposited functionalized graphene sheets were prepared and their superior electrochemical performances were demonstrated by cyclic voltammetry, galvanostatic charge-discharge, and impedance analysis. Ionic liquids were employed to functionalize the surface of reduced graphene oxides (RGOs), leading to prevention of the aggregation of RGO sheets and abundant growth sites for deposition of $MnO_2$ nanoparticles. As-prepared $MnO_2/RGO$ nanocomposites were characterized using scanning electron microscope, transition electron microscope, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction. Electrochemical properties of $MnO_2/RGO$ electrode were evaluated using $Na_2SO_4$ electrolyte under a three-electrode system. The $MnO_2/RGO$ electrode showed a high specific capacitance (251 F/g), a high rate capability (80.5% retention), and long-term stability (93.6% retention).

  • PEMFC stack power output is needed to be around 100 kW to meet the requirements of automotive application and scaling-up the active area of the stack cells will allow a higher power. In the case of scaling-up the active area of cells, it is difficult to obtain uniform in-plane internal conditions such as temperature, relative humidity and stoichiometry of the feed gas. These ununiformity with the location in the cell would affect both the performance and durability of the stack, so it is important to understand phenomena in the cell for improving them. In this study, the current density, electrochemical resistance and performance distribution measurement was performed to understand the ununiformity in a single cell using in-situ method; (1) Current Density Distribution (CDD) Device and (2) Segmented Cell Fixture. The influence of location of feed gas on the performance of a single cell was experimentally measured and discussed by using a segmented single cell which was composed of 8 compartments. The correlation between the location and performance in a single cell was discussed by these two tools and it was extended between the local characterization and the durability in a MEA by comparing the used cell with a fresh one. It was also studied in terms of electrochemistry by Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy.

  • In this study, $TiO_2$ nanotube plate and metal electrodes(Copper, Nickel, Stainless Steel, Aluminum, Tin, Titanium) were compared on cathodic reduction of nitrate ($NO_3{^-}-N$) during electrolysis. The electrochemical characteristics were compared based on electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The surface morphology was obtained using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) method. Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) method was implemented for the specific surface area analysis of the cathodes. To study kinetics, 90 minute batch electrolysis of nitrate solution was performed for each cathodes. In conclusion, under the condition of relatively low ($0.04 A\;cm^{-2}$) current density, $TiO_2$ nanotube plate showed no surface corrosion during the electrolysis, and the reaction rate was measured the highest in the kinetic analysis.

  • We have studied to find the optimum electrolyte that satisfied high ionic conductivity, large elec-trochemical window, etc in Li-ion battery. And also studied were the effect of a passive film on carbon anode surface,which is formed by solvent decomposition during the initial charge process. Electrochemical properties of the passive film formed on carbon anode surface investigated and explained as the volumetric ratio of the mixed solvents. The results of scanning electron microscopy, chronopotentiometry, cyclic voltammetry, impedance spectroscopy revealed that the electrochemical properties of the passive film were varied with the ionic conductivity of the electrolyte including the mixed solvents.

  • This paper describes how primary contaminants in ambient air affect the performance of the cathode in fuel cell electric vehicle applications. The effect of four atmospheric pollutants ($SO_2$, $NH_3$, $NO_2$, and CO) on cathode performance was investigated by air impurity injection and recovery test under load. Electrochemical analysis via polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy was performed for various concentrations of contaminants during the impurity test in order to determine the origins of performance decay. The variation in cell voltage derived empirically in this study and data reported in the literature were normalized and juxtaposed to elucidate the relationship between impurity concentration and performance. Mechanisms of cathode degradation by air impurities were discussed in light of the findings.

  • Freezing of water in a polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) may cause severe problems in driving a fuel cell vehicle during the winter time. Characteristics of PEMFC which suffered low temperatures below zero degree was examined with the thermal cycles from 80 to $-10^{\circ}C$. With the thermal cycles, the cell performance was degraded due to the phase transformation and volume changes of water. Effects of freezing of water in PEMFC on the electrode structure and polarization resistance were examined by BET analysis, cyclic voltammetry, and AC impedance spectroscopy.

Fabrication of Solid Oxide Fuel Cells via Physical Vapor Deposition with Electron Beam: II. Unit Cell Performance (전자빔 물리증착을 이용한 고체 산화물 연료전지의 제조: II. 단전지 성능)

  • In this paper, anode supported SOFC with columnar structured YSZ electrolyte was fabricated via Electron Beam Physical Vapor Deposition (EBPVD) method. Liquid condensation process was employed for the preparation of NiO-YSZ substrate and the high power electron beam deposition method was used for the deposition of YSZ electrolyte film. Double layered cathode with LSM-YSZ and LSM was printed on electrolyte via screen-printing method and fired at $1150^{\circ}C$ in air atmosphere for 3 h. The electrochemical performance and the long-term stability of $5{\times}5cm^2$ single cell were investigated with DC current-voltage characteristics and AC-impedance spectroscopy. According to the investigation, $5{\times}5cm^2$ sized unit cell showed the maximum power density of around $0.76W/cm^2$ at $800^{\circ}C$ and maintained the stable performance over 400 h.

Corrosion Protection Properties of Co3O4 and CoFe2O4 Nanoparticles for Water-Based Epoxy Coatings on 2024-T3 Aluminum Alloys

  • In this study, cobalt oxide (Co3O4) and cobalt-doped magnetite (CoFe2O4) nanoparticles were synthesized by a hydrothermal method. They were then used as corrosion inhibitors for corrosion protection of AA2024-T3 aluminum alloys. These obtained nanoparticles were characterized by x-ray diffraction, field-emission scanning electron microscopy, and Zeta potential measurements. Corrosion inhibition activities of Co3O4 and CoFe2O4 nanoparticles were determined by performing electrochemical measurements for bare AA2024-T3 aluminum alloys in 0.05 M NaCl + 0.1 M Na2SO4 solution containing Co3O4 or CoFe2O4 nanoparticles. Corrosion protection for AA2024-T3 aluminum alloys by a water-based epoxy with or without the synthesized Co3O4 or CoFe2O4 nanoparticles was investigated by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy during immersion in 0.1 M NaCl solution. The corrosion protection of epoxy coating deposited on the AA2024-T3 surface was improved by incorporating Co3O4 or CoFe2O4 nanoparticles in the coating. The corrosion protection performance of the epoxy coating containing CoFe2O4 was higher than that of the epoxy coating containing Co3O4.

Synthesis and Electrochemical Properties of Carbon Coated Li4Ti5O12 using PVC (PVC를 원료로 탄소코팅한 Li4Ti5O12의 합성 및 전기화학적 특성)

  • In this study, $Li_4Ti_5O_{12}$ anode materials for lithium ion battery were synthesized by dry ball-mill method. Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) as a carbon source was added to improve electrochemical properties. When the PVC was added after $Li_4Ti_5O_{12}$ formation, the spinel structure was well synthesized and it was confirmed by X-ray diffraction (XRD) experiments. When the carbon material was added before the synthesis and the heat treatment was performed, it was confirmed that a material having a different crystal structure was synthesized even when a small amount of carbon material was added. In the case of $Li_4Ti_5O_{12}$ without the carbon material, the electrical conductivity value was about $10{\mu}S\;m^{-1}$, which was very small and similar to that of the nonconductor. As the carbon was added, the electrical conductivity was greatly improved and increased up to 10,000 times. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) analysis showed that the size of semicircle corresponding to the resistance decreased with the carbon addition. This indicates that the resistance inside the electrode is reduced. According to the Cyclic voltammetry (CV) analysis, the potential difference between the oxidation peak and the reduction peak was reduced with carbon addition. This means that the rate of lithium ion insertion and deinsertion was increased. $Li_4Ti_5O_{12}$ with 9.5 wt% PVC added sample showed the best properties in rate capabilities of $180mA\;h\;g^{-1}$ at 0.2 C-rate, $165mA\;h\;g^{-1}$ at 0.5 C-rate, and $95.8mA\;h\;g^{-1}$ at 5 C-rate.
