Fabrication of a Y-branch Phase Modulator Using an Electro-Optic Polymer (전기광학 폴리머를 이용한 Y 분기형 위상 변조기의 제작)

  • A Y-branch phase modulator made of an electro-optic(EO) polymer has been designed and fabricated. An EO polymer, PMMA-DR1, is used for the core layer, and UV-curable polymers, UV-15 and UV-15 LV, for the cladding layers. The rib type polymeric waveguides are fabricated by the reactive ion etching method and their EO effects are obtained by the poling process. The optical properties of the fabricated phase modulator are as follows: the halfwave voltage, $V_{\pi}$, is 25 V, the insertion loss of TM mode is 13.8 dB, and the intensity modulation is 0.17 % (V).

  • In this paper, we propose a silicon-based electro-optic (EO) modulator which can modulate a sign of a topological charge number l of |l|=1 orbital angular momentum (OAM) mode. The proposed EO modulator consists of position-dependent doped Si waveguide core and undoped SiO2, cladding, which enables control of the effective index and propagation loss of two OAM constitutive eigenmodes. The modulator functions as OAM mode maintaining waveguide at -0.33V and as topological charge sign inverter at 10V. The output OAM mode purity is calculated through electric field distribution, showing high purity of |l|>0.92 in both cases.

  • A twisted nematic type liquid crystal electro-optic modulator (TN-LC modulator) was developed. The modulator used single polarizer and the reflection on-off ratio was maximized by optimization of twist angle and retardation of liquid crystal cell. The TNLC modulator shows better sensitivity and response time than conventional liquid crystal modulator.

X-band Microwave Photonic Filter Using Switch-based Fiber-Optic Delay Lines

  • An X-band microwave photonic (MWP) filter using switch-based fiber-optic delay lines has been proposed and experimentally demonstrated. It is composed of two electro-optic modulators (EOMs) and $2{\times}2$ optical MEMS-switch-based fiber-optic delay lines. By changing time-delay difference and coefficients of each wavelength signal by using fiber-optic delay lines and an electro-optic modulator, respectively, a bandpass filter or a notch filter can be implemented. For an X-band MWP filter with four channel elements, fiber-optic delay lines with the unit time-delay of 50 ps have been experimentally realized and the frequency responses corresponding to the time-delays has been measured. The measured frequency response error at center frequency and the time-delay difference error were 180 MHz at 10 GHz and 3.2 ps, respectively, when the fiber-optic delay line has the time-delay difference of 50 ps.

  • In this study, a planar waveguide has been fabricated on a Y-cut LiNbO3 substrate by the Ti indiffusion technique and its guiding characteristics are measured by bright M-line spectroscopy. Using the photolithography method, an electro-optic grating modulator with interdigital electrodes has been fabricated by depositing Al on the Ti:LiNbO3 planar waveguide. And the beam intensity diffracted by the grating is measured as the applied voltage is increased.

  • In this paper, we system the system design and numerical analysis of the ultrafast optical delay line using by optical phase modulator. The numerical analysis carried out with 1310nm, lops laser and electro-optic phase modulator. As the results of numerical analysis, we show a scanning rate of 0.5 GHz and a delay range of 19.0ps. Compare with mechanical delay line, the optical delay line has a high scanning speed and a high repetition rate.

  • A guided-wave electro-optic Mach-Zehnder interferometric modulator was fabricated on X-cut LiNbO3 . The channel waveguides were formed by proton diffusion with self-aligned SiO2-cladding. A mach-Zehnder interferometric modulator with arm lengths of 7mm has been fabricated and tested at 0.6328${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$. Its modulation depth with V$\pi$ of only 3.5V was 85% and the 3dB bandwidth was 1.6KHz. For high speed operation, the electrode dimension should be reduced to have smaller R, L, and C.

  • The design and analysis of a novel photonic crystal electro-optic modulator are presented in this paper. The device incorporates an electro-optic (EO) polymer slot waveguide into the center of a silicon photonic crystal waveguide. In this device, strong optical confinement in the EO polymer core and small group velocity from the photonic crystal structure provide a surprise enhancement of the EO effect.

  • A detailed analysis has been carried out of a zigzag traveling wave electro-optic laser modulator usin3 CuCl, KDP Crystal. The inclusion of such practical factors as M/W and optical loss results in an optimum design in which modulator dimensions and bandwidth limitation are uniquely determined by optical and M/W dielectic properties of modulating crystal. The main conclusion of the analysis are: (1) CuCl, KDP may be used to produce 50% modulation over bandwidth of 10(GHz) with less than (watt) of modulating power. (2) The upper modulation frequency limit is set by a cutoff frequency which arises from finite width of optical beam.

  • KIST에서는 Pulsed Laser를 사용하여 3차원 image를 재생할 수 있는 Electro-Holographic System을 만들어 CGH이미지를 구현하였다. CGH 이미지를 구현하기 위한 SLM (Spatial Light Modulator)으로 TeO$_2$ 결정의 Shear Mode 에서 동작하는 Bragg type의 다채널 AOSLM(Acousto-optic Spatial Light Modulator)이 사용되었다. 이 Bragg type 다채널 AOSLM에서는 광원이 특정 Bragg 각도로 입사하였을 때 다른 고위 차수는 억압되고 +나 -의 첫번째 차수의 회절 빔만이 형성된다.
