Wide-area monitoring of tree-related high impedance fault (THIF) efficiently contributes to increase reliability of large-scaled network, since the failure to early location of them may results in critical lines tripping and consequently large blackouts. In the first place, this wide-area monitoring of THIF requires managing the placement of sensors across large power grid network according to THIF detection objective. For this purpose, current paper presents a framework in which sensors are distributed according to a predetermined risk map. The proposed risk map determines the possibility of THIF occurrence on every branch in a power network, based on electrical conductivity of trees and their positions to power lines which extracted from spectral data. The obtained possibility value can be considered as a weight coefficient assigned to each branch in sensor placement problem. The next step after sensors deployment is to on-line monitor based on moving data window. In this on-line process, the received data window is evaluated for obtaining a correlation between low frequency and high frequency components of signal. If obtained correlation follows a specified pattern, received signal is considered as a THIF. Thereafter, if several faulted section candidates are found by deployed sensors, the most likely location is chosen from the list of candidates based on predetermined THIF risk map.
We consider fault detection and isolation (FDI) problem for inertial navigation systems (INS) which use redundant inertial sensors and propose an FDI method using average of multiple parity vectors which reduce false alarm and wrong isolation, and improve correct isolation. We suggest optimal isolation threshold based on navigation performance, and suggest optimal sample number to obtain short detection time and to enhance detectability of faults little larger than threshold.
This paper deals with the position control of an AC servo motor using linear hall-effect sensors. The price of these is very low, but it is possible to make position control of motor similar to a control using an encoder. This paper introduces the design of motor using linear hall-effect sensors and shows the results of control.
In this paper, web based monitoring systems are implemented for multi-axis force control systems of an intelligence robot. A brief review about the principle of multi-axis force sensors and a method that can reduce the effect of noise signal to sensor performance is presented. A web based monitoring system is implemented by porting Linux at embedded systems which include Xscale processors. A device driver is developed to receive data from multi-axis force sensors in Linux operation systems. To control this device driver, a socket program for web browser is also developed. The experiments are performed to investigate the effectiveness of proposed methods. The experimental results show that the values of force sensors can be monitored by remote PCs.
This paper presents the fabrication and characterization of graphene based hydrogen sensors. Graphene was synthesized by annealing process of Ni/3C-SiC thin films. Graphene was transferred onto oxidized Si substrates for fabrication of chemiresistive type hydrogen sensors. Au electrode on the graphene shows ohmic contact and the resistance is changed with hydrogen concentration. Nanoparticle catalysts of Pd and Pt were decorated. Response factor and response (recovery) time of hydrogen sensors based on the graphene are improved with catalysts. The response factors of pure graphene, Pt and Pd doped graphenes are 0.28, 0.6 and 1.26, respectively, at 50 ppm hydrogen concentration.
There is great interest in developing magnetoresistance(MR) sensor, using ferromagnetic, electrically non-magnetic conducting and antiferromagnetic films, especially for the use in weak magnetic fields. Here, we report single and Wheatstone-bridge type of MR sensors made in Si(001)/HiO(300$\AA$)/NiFe bilayers. Angular dependence of MR profiles was measured in Si(001)/NiO(300$\AA$)/NiFe(450$\AA$) films as a function of an angle between current and applied field direction, also, linearity was determined. AMR characteristics of single MR sensors was well explained with single domain model. Good linearity in 45$^{\circ}$Wheatstone-bridge type of MR sensors consisting of 4 single MR sensors made in Si(001)/NiO(300$\AA$)/NiFe(450$\AA$) was shown in the range of about $\pm$50 Oe.
Chopper and sensors failures resulting from electric shock and mechanical vibration generated by rail irregularities are the serious problem deteriorating the performance in the electromagnetic suspension systems. Thus, this paper proposes a fault-tolerant control scheme with a dynamic compensator for the failure of the choppers, gap sensors and acceleration sensors in electromagnetic suspension system. The advantage of the proposed control method are demonstrated through simulation and experimental results for the levitation characteristics when the failures of the chopper and sensors occur, respectively.
In this paper we consider an optimal configuration problem for redundant inertial sensors which have uncertainty such as misalignment, scale factor error. The optimal configuration problem is treated from the viewpoint of navigation accuracy. We propose a necessary and sufficient condition for the optimal configuration of redundant sensors with no uncertainty, and a sufficient condition for the optimal configuration of redundant sensors with uncertainty. Finally we propose a condition for the optimal configuration based both navigation performance and FDI(fault detection and isolation).
Electronic skin (or E-skin) is an artificial smart skin composed of one or more than two sensors. E-skins detect external stimuli and convert them into electrical signals. Various types of E-skin sensors exist, including mechanical, physical, and chemical, depending on the detection signals involved. For wearable E-skins with superior sensitivity and reliability, developing conductors that possess both good elasticity and sensitivity is essential. Typical electrical conductors used in these sensors show very high sensitivity, but they have drawbacks such as non-linearity, irreversibility, and a narrow sensing range. To address these issues, stretchable and lightweight ionic conductors have been actively used in E-skin applications. This study summarizes the recent progress on various types of ionic conductors and ionic-conductor-based E-skin sensors.
For on-line partial discharge (PD) monitoring of rotating machines, a novel sensor is proposed, which can be installed on the power lead inside the terminal box of the machine. The sensor has been designed to have high capacitance, and minimal reflection of measured pulses. As a sensitivity of the sensor, transfer impedance $Z_t$ has been measured and compared to conventional coupler-type sensors. A simple method is presented for measuring $Z_t$ of coupler sensors, using a vector network analyzer and a practical lead-cable of rotating machine. Through this method, it became possible to measure the $Z_t$ of coupler sensors including the installation environment of them. The $Z_t$ of the proposed sensor is higher than that of same sized other conventional couplers at frequencies between 30 and 92 MHz. Another sensitivity test has been performed using a PD calibrator as a test pulse source. The proposed sensor has higher measured peak voltage than the conventional coupler type sensors when the same charges were input.
