  • The purpose of this research is to analyze the effect of shape of the inductive textile electrode on the non-contact heart activity sensing, based on the magnetic-induced conductivity principle. Four types of the inductive textile electrodes were determined according to the combinations of the two shape features. A fiber-metal hybrid-typed conductive thread was developed and applied to materialization of the textile electrodes by embroidery method. The heart activity was extracted through the textile electrode sewn on a T-shirt. The experiments were implemented to constantly measure the heart activity for 20 seconds, in each case of 5 healthy male subjects. The heart activity signals acquired in each type of the inductive textile electrode were analyzed, 1)by drawing a comparison of morphology with those of ECG signal (LeadII), and 2)by calculation of the normalized mean and standard deviation of magnitude of the heart activity signals. The analysis resulted that the relatively better quality of signals were acquired in the 'square' types in the matter of whole shape, while the better results were obtained in 'donut' types in the matter of center hole. Accordingly, the relatively best quality of signals was obtained in the case of 'Square-Donut' type of the inductive textile electrode.

  • This paper describes far the detection of heart event that is, QRS complex and P wave which are result from heart activity. The proposed QRS detection method by using the spatial velocity was identified as having the 99.6% detection accuracy as well as fast processing time. Atrial flutter, coupled P wave, and noncoupled P wave as well as atrial fibrillation could be detected correctly by three different algorithms according to their origination farm. About 99.6% correction accuracy coupled P wave could be obtained and we could be found that most detection errors are caused by establishing wrong search interval.

  • The effects of omission of buffers from Krebs-Ringer medium on contractile activity, membrane potentials and ATP content of electrically stimulated isolated rat atria were investigated. 1) Contractile status: A rapid and marked depression of the contractile activity of atria occurred when buffer-free medium was substituted for the normal Krebs-Ringer medium. 2) Electrical status: The omission of buffers from medium did not alter the resting or action potential magnitudes of atria. However, the action potential duration was on initial increase followed by a decrease in the buffer-free medium. 3) ATP concentration: The omission of buffers from medium resulted in a marked decrease in the ATP levels of atria. It has been also found in the present study that bicarbonate buffer plays an important role for the maintenance of the contractility and ATP levels of the heart. The contractile depression by the omission of buffers was not directly associated with electrical alterations in resting or action potentials of the heart. In the absence of bicarbonate-buffer, glucose no longer plays to maintain the contractile activity and the ATP levels of rat atria.

  • Diagnostics of unborn baby is mainly aimed at prediction and detection of occurrence of intrauterine hypoxia. Consequences resulting from fetal hypoxia appear in its heart activity. In this study, we have developed a new non-invasive system for fetal hypoxia diagnosis which provides systolic time interval(STI) parameters on the basis of analysis of electrical and mechanical heart activity together. For this we have worked on 1) the proper lead system for the acquisition of abdominal ECG, 2) the independent component analysis based signal processing and fetal ECG separation, 3) the development of a hardware which consists of an abdominal ECG amplifying module and an ultrasound module and 4) the detection of characteristic points of FECG and Doppler signal and the extraction of diagnostic parameters. The developed system was evaluated by the clinical experiments in which 33 subjects were participated. The acquired STI by the system were distributed within the ranges from the well-established invasive results of other researchers. From this, we can conclude that the developed non-invasive fetal hypoxia diagnosis system is useful.

  • Electronic cigarettes are novel tobacco products that are frequently used these days. The cartridge contains liquid nicotine and accidental poisoning, even with a small oral dose, endangers children. We present here a mortality case of a 15-month-old child who ingested liquid nicotine mistaking it for cold medicine. When the emergency medical technicians arrived, she was found to have pulseless electrical activity. Spontaneous circulation was restored after approximately 40 minutes of cardiopulmonary resuscitation. The cotinine level in her urine was 1,716 ng/mL. Despite intensive supportive care, severe anoxic brain injury was found on computed tomography and the child ultimately died. This fatality highlights the need for public health efforts to minimize such accidents.

  • Electrocardiogram(ECG) being the recording of the heart's electrical activity provides valuable clinical information about heart's status. Many researches have been pursued for heart disease diagnosis using ECG so far. However, electrocardio-graph uses foreign diagnosis algorithm in the con due to inaccuracy of domestic diagnosis results for a heart disease. This paper proposes ST-segment extraction technique diagnosing heart disease parameter from raw ECG data. As the ST-segment is used for prediction of Coronary Artery Disease, we can predict heart disease using classification approach in data mining technique. We can also predict patient's clinical characterization from patient clinical data.

  • In this study, a new type of electrode device is implemented to measure the capacitance energy and interpret it as the ECG (Electrocardiogram) data. The main idea of this new electrode system is to estimate the capacitance on the skin by assembling a capacitive-coupled circuits and translate into the ECG signal. To measure the coupling energy and estimate the aquired data in terms of heart activity, the capacitive-coupled electrode is garmented with fabrics in the form of a chest band or a vest jacket. To compare the ECG data from the capacitive-coupled electrode with the conventional electrode(Ag-AgCl) system, the corelation coefficient between two signals is computed as 0.9517. Thus, we can conclude the fact that capacitive-coupled electrode system can measure a person's heart activity without any contact to his or her skin and can the interpreted as the ECG data.

  • This paper describes autonomic nervous system activities caused by hyperthermia of far-infrared ray on human body. Designed protocol and analysis algorithm were evaluated by experiments on 20 subjects to analyze the characteristic of heart rate variability(HRV) signals which could be analyzed by FFT power spectrum and time-frequency analysis. Using Poincare' plot analysis, LF and HF were compared with SD1 and SD2. During the experiment, subject was exposed to hyperthermic effects of far-infrared radiation. We could confirm that far-infrared ray, which was known to improve the blood circulation, stress state and enhancing thermal effect into human body, had an effect on human nervous system. As the hyperthermic temperature of far-infrared ray increased, the activity of cardiovascular system to sustain the homeostasis was observed by means of investigating the increase of the sympathetic activity.

  • Electrocardiogram (ECG) is a diagnostic test which records the electrical activity of the heart, shows abnormal rhythms and detects heart muscle damages. With this ECG signal, medical centers diagnose patients' heart disease symptoms. A normal resting heart rate for adults rages from 60 to 100 beats a minute. An irregular heartbeat is called "arrhythmia", and arrhythmia is also called "cardiac dysrhythmia". In an arrhythmia, the heartbeat maybe too slow(slower than 60beats), too rapid(faster than 100beats), too irregular, etc. Among these symptoms of arrhythmia, if the heart beat is slower than the normal range, the symptom is called "bradycardia", and if it is faster than the range, it is called "tachycardia" In this letters, we proposed the detection algorithm of cardiac arrhythmia in ECG signal using R-R interval through the detection of R-peak.
