Main Systems Composing Hybrid Tram (하이브리드 트램의 시스템 구성)

  • National projects on renewable energy and new energy are driven more actively than ever in many countries for the exhaustion of fossil fuel energy from the turn of the century. Such activities began to spread out in railway industry with centering around west European countries. Electric energy is generated on the hybrid vehicle itself, which contributes to reduction of the cost for construction of the infrastructure required for the supply of electric power. Hybrid tram is mainly composed of propulsion system to control electric energy, automatic guidance system to control steering and operation, and central vehicle unit to control and monitor major electronic devices. Generation and supply of electric power are made by the combination of engine generator and battery, or fuel cell and super capacitor.

  • Recently, as the feasibility study shows that trans-Korea railway and trans-continental railway are advantageous, interest in high-speed railway system is increasing. Because railway vehicle is environment-friendly and safe compared with airplane and ship, its market-sharing increases gradually. KHST(Korean High Speed Train) has been developed by KRRI (Korea Railroad Research Institute) for last 6 years to satisfy the need. An electric railway system is composed of high-tech subsystems, among which main electric equipment such as transformers and converter are critical components determining the performance of rolling stock. We developed a measurement system for on-line test and evaluation of performances of KHST. The measurement system is composed of software part and hardware part. Perfect interface between multi-users is possible. A now method to measure temperature was applied to the measurement system. By using the system, fault diagnosis and performance evaluation of electric equipment in Korean High Speed Train was conducted during test running.

  • Overhead contact systems (OCS) consist of contact and messenger wires, in which the contact wire supplies electric energy to the railway vehicle by contacting a pantograph. However, this mechanical contact is interrupted during frosts or temperatures below $0^{\circ}C$ in the winter. In these conditions, railway vehicle accidents can occur during operation because of the low energy efficiency that results from the increase in the arcing between the contact wire and pantograph. Therefore, the detection of frost or freezing temperatures is necessary to maintain the stable operation of these trains. In this study, we proposed the development of a frost or freezing condition monitoring system on the OCSs that utilizes wireless communication.

  • The development of a new railway vehicle is under progress through the Next Generation High-Speed Rail Development Project in Korea. Its aim is to develope fundamental technology of the vehicle that can run over 400km/h. The new distributed traction bogie system, 'HEMU'(High-speed Electric Multiple Unit), will be used and is different from that of previously developed high speed railway vehicles. Previous vehicles adopted push-pull type system, which means one traction-car drives rest all of the vehicle. Due to the difference, investigation on dynamic behavior and its safety evaluation are necessary, as a part of verification of the design specification. In the paper, current progresses of researches are presented. And the High-Speed Railway vehicle system is evaluated for a dynamic characteristic simulation. Proper dynamic models including air-suspension system, wheel-rail, bogie and car-body is developed according to the vehicle simulation scenario. The basic platform for the development of dynamic solver is prepared using nodal, modal coordinate system and wheel-rail contact module. Operating scenario is prepared using commercial dynamic analysis program and used for development of dynamic model, which contains many parts such as carbodies, bogies and suspension systems. Furthermore, international safety standard is applied for final verification of the system. Finally, the reliability of the dynamic model will be verified with test results in the further researches. This research will propose a better solution when test results shows a problem in the parts and elements. Finally, the vehicle that has excellent performance will be developed, promoting academic achievement and technical development.

An Experimental Study on Operation Setting Optimization of Circuit Breaker for Improving Safety on DC Railroad Feeder System (직류철도 급전계통의 안전성 향상을 위한 차단기 동작 최적 설정의 실험적 고찰)

  • This paper presents an experimental study on the optimal settings for the selected DC fault relay (50F) to improve the operating performance for the high-speed circuit breaker on DC feeding system which ensure safety within rolling stock maintenance depot. In this study, current supplied to overhead contact wire was calculated on 1 ms interval to analyze the correction values of DC fault selective relay for the operation of current supply cutout. Particularly, standards for the accurate detection of accidents between an electric railway vehicle and the electric power facilities are shown by investigating the optimal correction values for detection of fault current, and the results indicated that it takes about 213 ms for the DC fault selective relay(50F) to fully open. In the future, the correction values of DC fault selective relay suggested in this paper will be used as the reference values of protective relay for the safe operation of DC electric railroad system such as urban railway.

  • This paper presents a simplified dynamics of railway vehicle for a tilting train simulator. The tilting train simulator has 6 electric-driven actuators and a visualization system with 1600mm-diameter dome screen. The each system shares the data by ethernet. In order to analyze the dynamics of railway vehicle and transfer the results of the analysis to the other system of the tilting train simulator in realtime base, We assumed the tilting train as a simplified rigid body model with primary and secondary suspensions. The simplified vehicle model has a 17-DOF. Through the running analysis on the tight curve with various radius, we verified the simplified vehicle model.

  • In this thesis, As electric railway vehicle's speed becomes faster and faster and functional, the conditions of operation (or running condition) of the vehicle also become complicated and diverse. As the number of electric vehicle increases by enhancement of the running condition, problems are also raised in circulation current, vibration and unstable contact caused by equipment(sporting part for making horizontal between Trolley wire and Messenger wire) and troubles in Ark by un secure contact. This articles shows a method to prevent or to have least problem of vibration, and unstable contact by having constant height of Trolley wire through adjusting the length of Hanger.

  • In electric motor coaches, the rolling stocks move by the adhesive effort between rail and driving wheel. Generally, the adhesive effort is defined by the function of both the wright of electric motor coach and the adhesive effort between rails and driving wheel. The characteristics of adhesive effort is strongly affected by the conditions between rails and driving wheel. When the adhesive effort decreases suddenly, the electric motor coach has slip phenomena. This paper proposes a re-adhesion control based on disturbance observer and sensor-less vector control. The numerical simulation and experimental results point out that the proposed re-adhesion control system has the desired driving wheel torque response for the tested bogie system of electric coach. Based on this estimated adhesive effort, the re-adhesion control is performed to obtain the maximum transfer of the tractive effort.

  • Electric vehicles have reached a new level of development with introductions by Chrysler, Ford, Honda and Toyota. Today's charging technology includes conductive and inductive charging systems. There are three standardized charging levels: Level 1: charging can be done from a standard, grounded AC 120V, 3-prong outlet available in all homes; Level 2: charging is at AC 240V, 40 amp charging station with special consumer features to make it easy and convenient to plug in and charge EVs at home or at an EV charging station; Level 3: a high-powered charging "fast charge" technology currently under development that will provide a charge in less than 15 minutes. The incoming AC power is converted to DC and stored in the vehicle's batteries. In this paper, we investigated the application of urban railway DC electric power for electric car charging system.

  • Generally, vehicle is insulated from the earth by rubber tire which is intrinsically the insulation material. The electrical ground of vehicle was floated in the sense of electric potential over the electric power sources. First of all, the floated electrical ground of vehicle should be equipotentially connected with the (-) line of electrical equipment. Bimodal tram has the different kinds of electric system. They must be kept insulated to each other electrically. When there is some unbalanced event or connection between them, it will invoke some errors or breakdown to electrical devices including sensors and actuators. This paper has investigated the floating ground effect of bimodal tram built with composite body and shown the effect according to the unbalanced ground of vehicle and the connection between different electric systems.
