  • An ultra wide band ultra-high frequency (UHF) signal processing module was designed for on-line UHF partial discharge (PD) monitoring systems for gas-insulated switchgears (GIS). Major advantage of the unit is an improved PD detection sensitivity through minimizing the effect of surrounding interference signals. The detection sensitivity of the unit was <-60 dBm that is sufficient to detect UHF PD signals as low as 1 pC. Precise detection of PD occurred in the GIS, due to internal defects, is possible by using the signal processing unit.

A Study on the Life Cycle Cost Evaluation of the Conventional Auxiliary Power Unit for 8200 Series Electric Locomotive (8200호대 전기기관차용 기존품 보조전원장치의 수명주기비용 평가에 관한 연구)

  • In this paper, the life cycle cost of the auxiliary power unit in the conventional 8200 series electric locomotive is evaluated and an effective life cycle cost reduction method is sought. For this, a life cycle cost evaluation model was proposed using IEC 60300-3-3 standard. As a result of analysis, material cost which accounted for a large percentage of preventive maintenance cost, accounted for 64% of total cost, and breakdown maintenance cost was as high as 27%. Except for the cost of preventive maintenance, the breakdown maintenance cost ratio was the highest. In order to reduce the LCC of the auxiliary power unit(APU) of the 8200 series in the future, it is necessary to reduce the material cost in case of development and to secure the high reliability according to the parts manufacturing so as to minimize the maintenance cost.

  • Conventional power conversion unit that is a major part of the propulsion system has applied GTO thyristor as a switching semiconductor device of main circuit since introduction of the 8200 electric locomotive. But problem that quick maintenance is difficult and its cost is increasing occurs because major components of the power conversion unit are slowly discontinued. To solve these, in this paper, it was analyzed the response characteristic of the propulsion system modeling of the 8200 electric locomotive using IGBT which is applied recently to ensure propulsion control technology. As results of response for a Propulsion system modeling, it show that a power conversion unit is controlled by PLL(Phase-locked loop) and SVPWM(Space Voltage PWM) respectively.

  • ISO 26262 is an international standard for the functional safety of electric and electronic systems in vehicles, and this standard has become a major issue in the automotive industry. In this paper, a functional safety compliant electronic control unit (ECU) for an electric power steering (EPS) system and a demonstration purposed EPS system are developed, and a software and hardware structure for a safety critical system is presented. EPS is the most recently introduced power steering technology for vehicles, and it can improve driver’s convenience and fuel efficiency. In conformity with the design process specified in ISO 26262, the Automotive Safety Integrity Level (ASIL) of an EPS system is evaluated, and hardware and software are designed based on an asymmetric dual processing unit architecture and an external watchdog. The developed EPS system effectively demonstrates the fault detection and diagnostic functions of a functional safety compliant ECU as well as the basic EPS functions.

  • Electric vehicles that are currently in operation are being produced domestically. Therefore, there is no great difficulty in receiving or repairing the failed parts or in the overall repair. On the other hand, most of the electric locomotives are manufactured by introducing the parts and technology of foreign vehicle manufacturers. In this paper, conducted a study about life cycle cost analysis of developed auxiliary power unit in 8200 series electric locomotive and suggested cost down method. This confirms the economic benefits of the developed products of the auxiliary power supply compared to the existing products. In addition, a sensitivity analysis of MTBF was conducted to suggest a life cycle cost down method.

  • An electric multiple unit(EMU) consists of car body, bogie and brake equipment which is directly related to safety and performance of the motorcar. The blending brake mixed an electric brake and a friction brake is to reduce the energy by applying the restoration energy caused when the motorcar is stopped to car lines and to curtail the maintenance cost by saving the friction brake use. We have developed the advanced EMU since 2004, based on the experiences on the standard EMU in 1999, and we develop the installation which minimizes the use rate of the friction air brake by maximizing the electric brake use in the existing blending brake. We could accomplish the goal by improving the motorcar's Performance and solving the restoration energy's deficit by the friction brake. Actually, when it comes to the test results of standard EMU, except the service brake, in most conditions, we use electric brake to meet the requirements of the necessary brake power, exclusive when the motorcar leaves and stops. Therefore, in this paper, we consider the design concept of motorcar's blending brakes and suggest the way to develop the blending brake using the electric brake maximumly, which is caused by adequately controling the electric brake and the restoration brake.

  • We derived a formula which can calculate the space distribution of refractive index variation by an applied electric field about Bi$_{12}$ GeO$_{20}$ single crystal. Stereographic projection maps of refractive index variation by an applied electric field were made out using numerical value to be calculated by this formula. By the calculated results, since an electric field had applied to [(equation omitted) 1 1] direction and [1 (equation omitted) 1] direction of Bi$_{12}$ GeO$_{20}$ crystal, positive variation of the refractive index of [(equation omitted) 1 1] direction and [1 (equation omitted) 1] direction was the largest. The incremented refractive index per unit electric field was +3.2410${\times}$10$^{-11}$ V$^{-1}$ for the wavelength of 6328 $\AA$. Since an electric field had applied to [1 1 1] direction and [(equation omitted) 1] direction, negative variation of the refractive index of [1 1 1] direction and [(equation omitted) 1] direction was the largest. The decremented refractive index per unit electric field was -3.2410${\times}$10$^{-11}$ V$^{-1}$ for the wavelength of 6328 $\AA$.

  • PJB(Prefabricated Joint Box) is consisted of three major components ; an epoxy unit, a stress relief cone and a spring unit. The insulation structure of PJB is maintained by the interfacial pressure, and the dielectric performance at the interface depends on the interfacial pressure which is regarded as the most important factor for preventing breakdown failure. This experiment was performed to investigate breakdown voltage characteristic and partial discharge patterns under the controlled pressure conditions at the simulated interface. Finally, this paper presents the optimal pressure conditions at the interface by analyasing the PD patterns.

  • This paper presents a design methodology of a distribution transformer with condition monitoring sensors and its data processing unit. The proposed distribution transformer includes various type of condition monitoring sensors such as load current/voltage, temperature and heat aging of insulating oil. The data processing unit is installed at the distribution transformer site. It integrates sensed data and transmits these to a central server system. The proposed distribution transformer and its data processing unit will help an on-line condition monitoring system for distribution transformers.
