  • In a competitive environment of electric power industy, the level of uncertainty increase due to generation investment decisions creating new challenge to transmission system planner. The use of a locational signal and the provision of a indicative plan to control the generation investment reasonably is very important in the viewpoint of a regulator. The main target of this stuty is to emphasize on the necessity for considering simultaneously both generation and transmission expansion plan. This paper demonstrate the many case studies to make certain of the necessity for the interconnection between generation and transmission planning. In addition to, the planning in Korea power industry is considerd.

  • The government has proposed a mission to enhance intelligent power networks, decrease coal-fired generation, expand distributed energy resources, and promote energy prosumer into the distribution network in Korea. Installation cost of facility expansion to guaranteed interconnection with small distributed energy resources increases dramatically on KEPCO's distribution sector. And it is hard to withdraw in time. In addition, there are explicit research is required to meet the reliability on grid corresponding to the increase of distributed power. Infrastructure support for accommodating energy prosumer is also needed. Therefore, KEPCO is pushing transition to DSO by expanding distribution management scope and changing its roles. In addition, KEPCO is proactively preparing for integrated operation between distribution network and existing distributed power which is accommodated passively. KEPCO is also trying to accept multiple network users, e.g. building platforms, to manage a data and promote new markets. In the long term, transition to DSO will achieve saving investment costs for accommodating distributed sources and maintaining stable electrical quality. And it will be possible to create new business model using the platform to secure revenue.

  • Increasing interconnection of power plants in modern large electric power system has made power system dynamic studies much more complex. For effective analysis of the power system, model reduction and aggregation is required. In this paper, a new relation index is presented to identify the coherent generators in the large scale power system. In order to demonstrate the effects of this relation index, it is applied to a small scale power system of IEEE 39-bus test system and the simulation results are presented.

  • This paper proposes some alternatives fur the power system linkage between South and North Korea, under the current situation. Since little information and data on the North-Korean power system are available so far, many efforts have been made to collect the required data for the North system as much as possible if available, and suppose, estimate and/or conjecture many things otherwise. Using these collected or assumed data, the characteristics of bus voltage and power flow are being studied to estimate the feasibility of the proposed linkage alternatives. To this end, many case studies have been made to examine the performance of acceptable interconnection alternatives.

  • According to the 5th national plan for electric power demand and supply, the 3rd HVDC link will be installed between KEPCO and Jeju Island system and go into operation in June, 2016. However, if it adopt LCC HVDC, Jeju power system could be in voltage instable condition. In order to solve the problem, we propose the application of VSC HVDC to the 3rd HVDC project. In the past, VSC HVDC has many disadvantages such as, inefficiency in conversion, size limit, and expensiveness, compared to LCC HVDC. Recently, the new technologies and the demand for renewable energy interconnection are leading a large growth in VSC HVDC market. In this paper, we will introduce the technical and market trends of VSC HVDC and power system stability analysis results for Jeju power system having LCC and VSC HVDCs.

  • Fuel cell (FC) distributed generation (DG) is gradually becoming more attractive to mainstream electricity users as capacity improves and costs decrease. New technologies including inverters are becoming available to provide a uniform standard interconnection of DGs with an electric power system. Some of the operating conflicts and the effect of DG on power quality are addressed and investigated through simulations on a real distribution network with an FC power plant. The results of these simulations have proved load tracking capability following the real and reactive power change of the load and have shown the flow of overcurrent from an FC power plant during the ground fault of a distribution line.

  • Owing to the environmental problems as well as increasing energy prices and power plant construction costs, many researches have been made for the safe operation of distributed generations. In order to be more popularly used in parallel with the distribution network, the distributed generation and its correlation with the power system should be exactly monitored at any time. This paper presents a monitoring system which displays the important states of the distributed generation in operation and stores various measurements of the system. The proposed system constructs a data-base for developing algorithms against any faults of the interconnected system, and monitors efficiently at any place with the communication network function.

  • Cogeneration systems are seen as a significant innovation for dispersed energy generation since they are both environmentally friendly and has comparatively high degrees of efficiency. It is especially suited for the decentralized provision of electricity and heat. However, it causes operational problems such as voltage regulation, voltage variation, protection and safety. Especially, it is expected that the interconnection/disconnection operation of cogeneration system has an effect on distribution voltage regulation and variation. Recently, with the increased use of customer-owned computers and other sensitive electronic equipment, electric power quality has become an important concerns. Therefore, the voltage quality problems with cogeneration system should be investigated because the voltage quality is an important part of electrical power quality. In this paper, the momentary voltage dips associated with the interconnection/disconnection operation of cogeneration system are analyzed, including restraint solutions at the customer level. In addition, the unit capacity of cogeneration systems per feeder are evaluated from the view point of momentary voltage variations. The results of this paper are useful analysis data for interconnection standards/guidelines of cogeneration systems and dispersed generation (DG)

  • A microgrid is a new type of power system which is formed by the interconnection of small generator to distribution systems. Microgrids are able to supply electric power to their loads independently, which is called with islanding operation, even if they're separated from the power system. As a result, microgrids must be equipped with specific islanding detection schemes for the islanding operation of microgrids. This paper studies an islanding detection method considering reactive power. The proposed method is dealing with the reactive power of the cable which connects between a microgrid and a power system. To show the validity of the proposed method, many islanding operation cases are tested by varying the load conditions of microgrids.

  • This paper demonstrates that the verification and analysis of the increase of hosting capacity of distributed energy resources in distribution system for the high penetration of distributed energy resources. In the case of generally designed distribution feeders in South Korea, it can host up to 10 MVA of distributed energy resources and the over voltage due to reverse power flow is prohibited beyond the range by the law of electric utility. However, it should take into consideration that there are some factors of extra hosting capacity such as generation characteristics of distributed energy resources and minimum loads that always exist to distribution system. For these reason, we choose a specific distribution system hosted 10 MVA of distributed energy resources monitored by distribution system operator and verify the impact of increasing hosting capacity such as power flow and voltage profile of distribution system. By the result, we could find that it is possible to increase the hosting capacity and define the factors to expand the hosting capacity of distributed energy resources in distribution system.
